The surface properties of carbon fibers and their adhesion to organic polymers

    Get PDF
The state of knowledge of the surface properties of carbon fibers is reviewed, with emphasis on fiber/matrix adhesion in carbon fiber reinforced plastics. Subjects treated include carbon fiber structure and chemistry, techniques for the study of the fiber surface, polymer/fiber bond strength and its measurement, variations in polymer properties in the interphase, and the influence of fiber matrix adhesion on composite mechanical properties. Critical issues are summarized and search recommendations are made

Prospective Person Memory in the Case of Missing Persons: A Coffee Shop Study

    Get PDF
Prospective person memory (PPM) is the process of remembering to perform some action after encountering a target individual, such as identifying and reporting a missing person sighting after viewing a missing person alert (Moore et al., 2021). Research has shown that identification rates generally tend to be low in simulated missing person studies (Lampinen & Moore, 2016b). The purpose of the current research is to determine how to improve missing person recognition rates. This project explores the potential effects of using videos in missing person reports as compared to using static images. We also consider differences between rigid and non-rigid facial movements. The study conformed to a 2 (Format: Video, Static) x 2 (Motion Type: Rigid, NonRigid) factorial design. Our hypotheses propose a) the video conditions will outperform the static image conditions, and b) non-rigid movements will yield greater identification accuracy than rigid movements. However, our hypotheses were not supported as our results showed the rigid static stimulus condition had the best identification performance overall. These findings provide future researchers insight into the process of encoding and recollecting human faces and provide authorities information on the stimuli that is most advantageous to use for real-world missing person cases

Transportation Related Challenges for Persons with Disabilities

Gaining access to transportation is essential for obtaining employment, education, healthcare, and social interaction. Individuals who face difficulties in gaining this access are considered ‘transportation disadvantaged’ and include individuals of lower socioeconomic status, aging individuals, and persons with disabilities. In our autodependent society, individuals with disabilities face even fewer opportunities to interact within their communities. In order to better understand how individuals with disabilities are limited by their access to transportation, two studies were conducted. The first study specifically seeks to examine how individuals with disabilities gain access to transportation and the interpersonal relationships that affect opportunities for social participation in the community. A self-administered online questionnaire was disseminated to individuals residing in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States. Individuals with disabilities were found to have less access to private vehicles and to utilize public transportation more than previously reported. The majority of individuals with disabilities feel that their access level to transportation hindered their social life. The second study, using the same survey as the first study with some variation of the questions and a larger sample size, sought to understand the needs of individuals with disabilities from a national perspective. Individuals were found to use private vehicles less and more public transportation than previous studies have shown. Individuals with more significant disabilities were more likely to face transportation-related exclusion

Internalizing symptoms, medication adherence, and perceived social support in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease

2017 Spring.Includes bibliographical references. The present study examines perceived social support for individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Patients were recruited for this study from online forums consisting of Facebook support groups, Twitter followers, and email. This study investigated sociodemographic and disease-related predictors of disease severity for individuals with IBD, as well as whether or not perceived social support moderates the relationship between disease severity, internalizing symptoms, quality of life, and medication adherence. A sample size of 155 individuals self-reporting with inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease) completed questionnaires related to disease severity, disease type, disease duration, quality of life, depression, anxiety, stress, perceived social support, and medication adherence. The study findings suggest that anxiety and stress are potential predictors of scores on disease severity for this population. Results also suggests that perceived social support is likely to have (or had in this sample) a significant, moderating relationship between disease severity and anxiety, disease severity and stress, and disease severity and the full depression, anxiety and stress scale (DASS). Anxiety was also found to moderate the relationship between disease severity and adjusted quality of life (QoL) scale. Perceived social support did not moderate the relationship between disease severity and the abbreviated medication adherence rating scale (MARS) generated by principle component analysis. It is important to note that future research should include a more randomized, representative sample, allowing for more conclusive findings. Understanding the psychological impact associated with this disease provides continued evidence for the need support individuals coping with IBD
