    Partitioning edge-coloured complete graphs into monochromatic cycles and paths

    A conjecture of Erd\H{o}s, Gy\'arf\'as, and Pyber says that in any edge-colouring of a complete graph with r colours, it is possible to cover all the vertices with r vertex-disjoint monochromatic cycles. So far, this conjecture has been proven only for r = 2. In this paper we show that in fact this conjecture is false for all r > 2. In contrast to this, we show that in any edge-colouring of a complete graph with three colours, it is possible to cover all the vertices with three vertex-disjoint monochromatic paths, proving a particular case of a conjecture due to Gy\'arf\'as. As an intermediate result we show that in any edge-colouring of the complete graph with the colours red and blue, it is possible to cover all the vertices with a red path, and a disjoint blue balanced complete bipartite graph.Comment: 25 pages, 3 figure

    The aim of this work is to estimate the local heat flux and heat transfer coefficient for the case of evaporation of thin liquid film deposited on capillary heated channel: it plays a fundamental role in the two-phase heat transfer processes inside mini-channels. In the present analysis it is investigated a semi-infinite slug flow (one liquid slug followed by one single vapour bubble) in a heated capillary copper tube. The estimation procedure here adopted is based on the solution of the inverse heat conduction problem within the wall domain adopting, as input data, the temperature field on the external tube wall acquired by means of infrared thermography

    Deficiency of the 5-α-reductase enzyme has been found to affect male sexual development. We report an 18-year-old patient who was referred to an endocrinology clinic in Jizan, Saudi Arabia, in April 2014 with primary amenorrhoea, virilisation and a lack of secondary sex characteristics. As female external genitalia were present at birth, she had been raised as a female. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed no uterine or ovarian tissue in the pelvis and the presence of a scrotal sac. She was diagnosed with 5-α-reductase type 2 deficiency, a 46,XY disorder of sexual development. Typically, affected males have pseudovaginal perineoscrotal hypospadias and ambiguous genitalia at birth. Individuals who have been raised as female manifest characteristics of virilisation at puberty, including deepening of the vocal tone, phallus enlargement, scrotal hyperpigmentation and increased muscle mass

    A novel pyroelectric generator utilising naturally driven temperature fluctuations from oscillating heat pipes for waste heat recovery and thermal energy harvesting

    Low temperature thermal to electrical energy converters have the potential to provide a route for recovering waste energy. In this paper, we propose a new configuration of a thermal harvester that uses a naturally driven thermal oscillator free of mechanical motion and operates between a hot heat source and a cold heat sink. The system exploits a heat induced liquid-vapour transition of a working fluid as a primary driver for a pyroelectric generator. The two-phase instability of a fluid in a closed looped capillary channel of an oscillating heat pipe (OHP) creates pressure differences which lead to local high frequency temperature oscillations in the range of 0.1–5 K. Such temperature changes are suitable for pyroelectric thermal to electrical energy conversion, where the pyroelectric generator is attached to the adiabatic wall of the OHP, thereby absorbing thermal energy from the passing fluid. This new pyroelectric-oscillating heat pipe (POHP) assembly of a low temperature generator continuously operates across a spatial heat source temperature of 55 °C and a heat sink temperature of 25 °C, and enables waste heat recovery and thermal energy harvesting from small temperature gradients at low temperatures. Our electrical measurements with lead zirconate titanate (PZT) show an open circuit voltage of 0.4 V (AC) and with lead magnesium niobate–lead titanate (PMN-PT) an open circuit voltage of 0.8 V (AC) at a frequency of 0.45 Hz, with an energy density of 95 pJ cm−3 for PMN-PT. Our novel POHP device therefore has the capability to convert small quantities of thermal energy into more desirable electricity in the nW to mW range and provides an alternative to currently used batteries or centralised energy generation

    Experimental Analysis of the Fluid Flow in the Flat Plate Pulsating Heat Pipe Under Microgravity Conditions

    An experimental study of a flat plate pulsating heat pipe has been performed under various gravity conditions during ESA 69th parabolic flight campaign. A molybdenum plate, with 14 milled rectangular channels with cross-section of 3×3 mm2, was covered with a sapphire window, and tested in vertical position with ethanol as working fluid. If operation in normal and hyper-gravity conditions were characterized by nucleate boiling regime, FP-PHP working like in looped thermosyphon mode, transition into microgravity was accompanied by a flow pattern change into slug/plug regime with thin film evaporation, due to absence of buoyancy forces. Hydrodynamic instabilities, accompanied with short-term periods of emergence of nucleate boiling under microgravity, were observed during several parabolas. Formations of long vapor slugs in the channel lead to thin film evaporation. Combined optical and infrared visualizations showed velocity and amplitude increase of the menisci motions

    Production/maintenance cooperative scheduling using multi-agents and fuzzy logic

    Within companies, production is directly concerned with the manufacturing schedule, but other services like sales, maintenance, purchasing or workforce management should also have an influence on this schedule. These services often have together a hierarchical relationship, i.e. the leading function (most of the time sales or production) generates constraints defining the framework within which the other functions have to satisfy their own objectives. We show how the multi-agent paradigm, often used in scheduling for its ability to distribute decision-making, can also provide a framework for making several functions cooperate in the schedule performance. Production and maintenance have been chosen as an example: having common resources (the machines), their activities are actually often conflicting. We show how to use a fuzzy logic in order to model the temporal degrees of freedom of the two functions, and show that this approach may allow one to obtain a schedule that provides a better compromise between the satisfaction of the respective objectives of the two functions

    PENGEMBANGAN MODUL PRAKTIKUM BERBASIS PENDEKATAN OPEN ENDED UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KREATIVITAS SISWA

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan media pembelajaran berupa modul praktikum berbasis open ended, serta menganalisis pengaruhnya terhadap tingkat kreativitas siswa setelah diterapkan modul. Metode penelitian yang dilakukan adalah metode research and development (RD) dengan model pengembangan analysis, design, develop, implement, and evaluate (ADDIE).Subjek penelitian siswa kelas XI IPA 1 SMAN I Simeulue Tengah yang berjumlah 25 siswa. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa modul, soal tes, angket tanggapan siswa. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kualitas modul dalam katagori baik, selain itu juga respon siswa terhadap modul yang dikembangkan sangat posisif. Peningkatan kreativitas siswa tertinggi terdapat pada indikator luwes (fleksibelity) dengan N-Gain yaitu 0,84% dan termasuk dalam kategori sangat baik, sedangkan yang terendah N-Gain yaitu 0,74% namun masih dalam kategori tinggi.  Uji statistik dengan taraf signifikansi 0,05% menunjukkan nilai  thitung 1,88 ttabel 1,71, maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan modul praktikum berbasis open ended pada materi fluida dinamis dapat meningkatkan kreativitas siswa secara signifika
