The Role of Remittances in Migration Decision: Evidence from Turkish Migration

    Get PDF
In this study we analyse the impact of workers' remittances on the decision to migrate by means of cointegration analysis. In traditional migration theories, especially in human capital models, the decision to migrate is based upon comparison of expected future incomes in the sending and the receiving countries adjusted for the cost of migration. By contrast, the new economics of labour migration suggests that the migration decision is made jointly by the migrant and his family. One important element of this theory is the role of remittances that is absent in traditional migration theories. In this paper we test traditional migration theories against the new economics of labour migration. The study covers the Turkish migration to Germany over the period 1964-2004. A single cointegrating relation between the migration inflows and the relative income ratio between Germany and Turkey, the unemployment rates in Germany and Turkey, the trade intensity variable, and workers' remittances (relative to Turkish GDP) is found. We find workers' remittances to be significant in explaining migration both in the short- as well as in the long-run.Migration, trade, remittances, the new economic of migration, cointegration

    Modelling Turkish Migration to Germany

    Get PDF
This study develops a time series model of Turkish migration to Germany for the period 1963-2004 using the cointegration technique. A single cointegrating relation between the migration flow variable and the relative income ratio between Germany and Turkey, the unemployment rates in Germany and Turkey, and the trade variable, that captures intensity of bilateral economic cooperation, is found. By including the trade variable in the empirical migration function we investigate whether trade and migration are complements or substitutes: a question on which the theoretical literature does not provide a definite answer. Our results support the former view.Migration, trade, economic development, cointegration

Model Order Reduction for Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation

We apply the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) to the nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation to derive a reduced order model. The NLS equation is discretized in space by finite differences and is solved in time by structure preserving symplectic mid-point rule. A priori error estimates are derived for the POD reduced dynamical system. Numerical results for one and two dimensional NLS equations, coupled NLS equation with soliton solutions show that the low-dimensional approximations obtained by POD reproduce very well the characteristic dynamics of the system, such as preservation of energy and the solutions

Migration-driven women’s empowerment: The case of Turkey

    Get PDF
Abstract. This paper addresses the effect of migration on women’s empowerment in Turkey.  Utilization of data over six decades from 1960 until 2011 gives the possibility that these series can be spuriously correlated. This study, therefore, adopts the bounds testing procedure as a method to determine and to avoid spurious correlation. The results of bounds testing gives clear-cut evidence that women’s empowerment, the share of women in parliament in the present context, is related to the emigration rate, the relative education of women and to a measure of democracy. It is also found that the share of women in parliament is related to the country groups with the largest effect in European and core OECD countries. The results are robust for the inclusion of asylum seekers and refugees in the emigration data.Keywords. International migration.JEL. F22

Turkey In The Caspian Sea Region

    Get PDF
This thesis will determine the influence of Turkey\u27s domestic resources on Turkey\u27s foreign relations with the five Turkic states in the Caspian Sea Region. The spheres analyzed in this study are the common ties, which are history, culture, religion and language, with the regional countries, pan-Turkism, Turkey\u27s initial interactions as well as ongoing constructive policies in the region. Findings showed that both Turkey and the five Turkic republics were enthusiastic to carry their relations in every field to future cooperation following the break up of the Soviet Union. However the Turkic Republics\u27 interest in Turkish development model gradually declined starting from the 1994s.The hypothesis that socio-cultural ties will ease establishing close foreign relations is applicable to all five republics. The Turkic states welcomed Turkey\u27s educational and cultural policies with great willingness. In the field of business we find that Turkish economy follows a similar pattern in its relations with the Azerbaijani and Central Asian markets. Accordant policy goals of Turkey and the five republics led Turkey to establish close foreign relations with the regional countries. Turkey tried to give military aid to the Turkic republics of Central Asia in their struggle against terrorist groups which have the capacity to destabilize governments and to threaten international security. The hypothesis that the more Turkey has business interests in the Caspian Sea Region the more Turkey will have closer foreign relations with Turkic countries is mostly apparent in the case of Azerbaijan. In the area of energy politics Turkey has its strongest link with Azerbaijan. Besides being strong economic partners Turkey is Azerbaijan\u27s biggest supporter in the region against Armenia

Parametric BIM façade module development for diagrid twisted structures

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is an epochal phenomenon in AEC. Most of the developed countries has already adopted BIM by regulations. Biggest projects around the world executing by BIM which provides more effective project management process. Whole construction progress including; feasibility, design, construction and commissioning became digital visualization. Any required analysis can be done via this model template. In fact, requesting the complex and sophisticated structures’ construction is the main catalyst of developing BIM. Mankind start to design and construct cutting-edges and pushing limit structures. Twisted towers are one of the significant instance of like these structures. This study embrace the twisted towers’ façade design which has one of the most complex patterns. So it is thought that if such these towers’ façade system can be organized and customized limitlessly, most of the façades systems will be solved for the optimum result. This study aims to reveal a method which can be used for to develop easily alternative façade systems for construction projects even they have very complex design. One of the most complex structures the twisted diagrid systems which are constructed currently around the world was selected. BIM and computational programming have been used to improve the module.ArcadisAutodeskTopconVHV VersicherungenZPP German Engineerin

The civil service in Brazil and Turkey: a comparative study

    Get PDF
Despite their notable differences, Brazil and Turkey have been widely compared as emerging economic powers led by popular governments in the 2000s. These comparisons have largely ignored the parallel institutional evolution of their civil service since the early 20th century. Throughout the past century, the two countries experienced simultaneous attempts to reform and modernise their public administrations mostly in the Weberian model. From the 1980s onwards, their paths diverged: Brazil after re-democratisation reinforced the central, merit-based structure of its civil service, while Turkey introduced new private sector arrangements and practices. Although today both civil services boast a mix of career and contract arrangements, they also display different structural characteristics, and face opposite sets of challenges regarding meritocracy, professionalism, efficiency and political patronage. While until recently Turkey could be viewed as a relatively successful example of economic and political liberalisation – including integrating NPM principles into the state bureaucracy – the country’s recent decline into authoritarianism and excessive political interference in state institutions have turned it into a cautionary tale for Brazil.32 p.Administração PĂșblicaGovernançaCadernos Enap, n. 60 - ISSN: 0104-707

Spurious correlation in estimation of the health production function: A note

    Get PDF
In this paper, we address the issue of spurious correlation in the production of health in a systematic way. Spurious correlation entails the risk of linking health status to medical (and nonmedical) inputs when no links exist. This note first presents the bounds testing procedure as a method to detect and avoid spurious correlation. It then applies it to a recent contribution by Lichtenberg (2004), which relates longevity in the United States to pharmaceutical innovation and public health care expenditure. The results of the bounds testing procedure show longevity to be linearly related to these two factors. Therefore, the estimates reported by Lichtenberg (2004) cannot be said to be result of spurious correlation, to the contrary, they very likely reflect an effective relationship, at least for the United States.Health; Life expectancy, Innovation, Pharmaceuticals, Health care expenditure, Cointegration
