California State University, Monterey Bay Student-Athlete Handbook : action thesis ...

    Get PDF
This action thesis project is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts in Education degree at California State University, Monterey Bay. This project is entitled the California State University, Monterey Bay Student-Athlete Handbook. The handbook was completed over a two and half-year period as I progressed throughout the M.A.E. elective and required classes, culminating in the final capstone course. The contents of this thesis paper include the mandated requirements such as the front matter, statement of purpose, literature review, methodology discussion, action plan, appendix, and references. However, the bulk of this document is centered around the handbook itself. Compiled specifically for the student-athletes at California State University, Monterey Bay, this document is designed to be used as a resource tool. The product contains invaluable information regarding numerous topics relevant to our student-athletes. The content material includes eight specific sections. These sections are an Introduction, University Services, Athletic Department Services, N.C.A.A. Division II Compliance, Academics, Athletic Training including Health and Wellness, Life Skills, and a Conclusion. The handbook will be made readily accessible to every student-athlete at this institution via hard copy or online form. I am positive that this resource manual will aid my target market in their academic and athletic career here at C.S.U.M.B. while empowering them for future success

    Self-dual Maxwell Chern-Simons Solitons In 1+1 Dimensions

    Get PDF
We study the domain wall soliton solutions in the relativistic self-dual Maxwell Chern-Simons model in 1+1 dimensions obtained by the dimensional reduction of the 2+1 model. Both topological and nontopological self-dual solutions are found in this case. A la BPS dyons here the Bogomol'ny bound on the energy is expressed in terms of two conserved quantities. We discuss the underlying supersymmetry. Nonrelativistic limit of this model is also considered and static, nonrelativistic self-dual soliton solutions are obtained.Comment: 18 pages RevTex, 2 figures included, to appear in Phys. Rev.

The BPS Domain Wall Solutions in Self-Dual Chern-Simons-Higgs Systems

    Get PDF
We study domain wall solitons in the relativistic self-dual Chern-Simons Higgs systems by the dimensional reduction method to two dimensional spacetime. The Bogomolny bound on the energy is given by two conserved quantities in a similar way that the energy bound for BPS dyons is set in some Yang-Mills-Higgs systems in four dimensions. We find the explicit soliton configurations which saturate the energy bound and their nonrelativistic counter parts. We also discuss the underlying N=2 supersymmetry.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, no figure, a minor change in acknowledgment

Control of lysozyme gene expression in differentiating HL-60 cells

We have investigated the control of lysozyme gene expression in HL-60 cells induced to differentiate into macrophage-like cells with phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). Differentiation, as evidenced by cellular adherence, and morphological changes corresponded temporally to an increase in nonspecific esterase activity. The lysozyme concentration in the medium of uninduced HL-60 cells was 10 Μg/10 7 cells. increasing to a maximum of 46 Μg/10 7 cells after 48 h incubation with PMA (16 nm). At 72 h the lysozyme concentration decreased to 16 Μg/10 7 cells. Intracellular lysozyme activity remained constant throughout differentiation. If HL-60 cells were exposed to PMA for 24 h, washed, then maintained in normal medium, they differentiated normally, confirming their irreversible commitment to differentiate. The increase in lysozyme secretion by these cells, however, is markedly blunted suggesting that continued PMA treatment of differentiated cells is required for their secretion of lysozyme. There is no change in the rate of extracellular degradation of lysozyme during differentiation. The level of lysozyme mRNA does not correlate directly with the amount of lysozyme secreted into the medium. Hybridization of uninduced HL-60 cell RNA with a chicken lysozyme cDNA probe demonstrates moderate hybridization. There is a modest (five-fold) increase in lysozyme mRNA between 0 and 36 h of exposure to PMA, corresponding to the burst of lysozyme secretion by these cells. The lysozyme mRNA decreases to a level which is lower than the original baseline by 72 h, when the cells are still secreting substantial amounts of lysozyme. These data suggest that both transcriptional and post-transcriptional controls are operative in the control of lysozyme gene expression during the differentiation of HL-60 cells. They also imply that lysozyme secretion is not a necessary component in the macrophage-monocyte differentiation of these cells.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/71582/1/j.1365-2141.1985.tb07380.x.pd

Validation of a Prediction Tool for Chemotherapy Toxicity in Older Adults With Cancer

    Get PDF
Older adults are at increased risk for chemotherapy toxicity, and standard oncology assessment measures cannot identify those at risk. A predictive model for chemotherapy toxicity was developed (N = 500) that consisted of geriatric assessment questions and other clinical variables. This study aims to externally validate this model in an independent cohort (N = 250)

Gray matter density reduction associated with adjuvant chemotherapy in older women with breast cancer

    Get PDF
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate longitudinal changes in brain gray matter density (GMD) before and after adjuvant chemotherapy in older women with breast cancer. METHODS: We recruited 16 women aged ≄ 60 years with stage I-III breast cancers receiving adjuvant chemotherapy (CT) and 15 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC). The CT group underwent brain MRI and the NIH Toolbox for Cognition testing prior to adjuvant chemotherapy (time point 1, TP1) and within 1 month after chemotherapy (time point 2, TP2). The HC group underwent the same assessments at matched intervals. GMD was evaluated with the voxel-based morphometry. RESULTS: The mean age was 67 years in the CT group and 68.5 years in the HC group. There was significant GMD reduction within the chemotherapy group from TP1 to TP2. Compared to the HC group, the CT group displayed statistically significantly greater GMD reductions from TP1 to TP2 in the brain regions involving the left anterior cingulate gyrus, right insula, and left middle temporal gyrus (pFWE(family-wise error)-corrected < 0.05). The baseline GMD in left insula was positively correlated with the baseline list-sorting working memory score in the HC group (pFWE-corrected < 0.05). No correlation was observed for the changes in GMD with the changes in cognitive testing scores from TP1 to TP2 (pFWE-corrected < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that GMD reductions were associated with adjuvant chemotherapy in older women with breast cancer. Future studies are needed to understand the clinical significance of the neuroimaging findings. This study is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01992432)
