Cutaneous (LTA) and Visceral (LVA) American Leishmaniasis incidences are increasing in human and canine hosts, especially LVA, which is expanding its range through Sao Paulo State. Distribution and ecology knowledge of different sand fly species is essential for leishmaniasis epidemiology vigilance. The communication of new findings of its vectors is mandatory for risk determination for transmission of these illnesses. On this study sand flies were trapped in bushed areas, in different localities at rural areas of Ipeuna, Itirapina and Analandia counties, between August and September 2007. A total of 248 specimens of nine different species were sampled in Ipeuna, six and seven specimens of two different species were trapped in Itirapina and Analandia, respectively. The most abundant species in Ipeuna was Pintomyia pessoai (37.5%), followed by Pintomyia fischeri (33.06%) and Migonemyia migonei (16.53%), all three species are considered vectors of LTA in Sao Paulo State. Lutzomyia longipalpis was found in Ipeuna and Analandia for the first time and its presence confirmed in Itirapina, indicating a risk of LVA essablishment in the area and the need for further local studies on its ecology, especially regarding its occupation of the anthropic environment.181626

Enhanced side-mode suppression in chaotic stadium microcavity lasers

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)We report an enhanced side-mode suppression in Bunimovich stadium lasers with strained InGaAs/InGaP quantum well (QW) active regions. This is realized with spatially selective carrier injection along a particular periodic orbit of the stadium. The selectivity is achieved using He(+3) ion implantation. Up to 21 dB enhancement in side-mode suppression is observed for a 40x20 mu m(2) stadium with interband transition between the first excited quantum well level. The improvement in side-mode suppression is apparently a consequence of coherent beating between orbits leading to a Vernier effect. A simple model corroborate with this hypothesis.1056Centro de Pesquisa em Optica e Fotonica (CePOF)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP

Strong spatial beryllium doping selectivity on InGaP layers grown on pre-patterned GaAs substrates by chemical beam epitaxy

We present an investigation of beryllium doping selectivity in InGaP layers grown by chemical beam epitaxy on pre-patterned substrates. We observed a resistivity of 3.1 X 10(-2) and 4.5 x 10(-2) Omega cm for (1 1 1)A planes with the growth at 500degreesC and 540degreesC, respectively. The layers on (0 0 1) planes show a resistivity of 8.9 x 10(-1) Omega cm with the growth at 500degreesC, being essentially undoped with the growth at 540degreesC (.) We show how this strong doping selectivity can be explained by Be3P2 cluster formation growth, which depends on growth temperature and planar crystalline structure. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The study aimed characterizes hospitalized older individuals as regards social and programmatic vulnerability. It is a quantitative study performed at the Ward for Adult Patients at the Emergency Unit of the Botucatu University Hospital - UNESP. Data were collected from May to October, 2009 by means of interviews and information from patients' charts. The sample consisted of 71 individuals whose mean age was 74.30 years. Most of them lived with a relative and were assisted by a health care service, but only eight were members of a community association or participated in other forms of social leisure. Integrated care to older persons must urgently become a reality, and an individual approach focused on the person rather than on one's disease must be utilized, paying attention to older patients' vulnerabilities and respecting their autonomy and dignity
