Soziale Kontrolle durch Psychologie und Psychologen: einige Vorüberlegungen

Es geht um die Funktion und Grenzen der psychologischen sozialen Kontrolle. Der Autor beschreibt die Entwicklung psychologischer Interventionen und ihrer Rezeption im Hinblick auf die Sozialintegration im Prozeß der bürgerlichen Vergesellschaftung. Die Verwissenschaftlichung innergesellschaftlicher Kontrollprozesse tritt symbioseähnlich mit psychologischen Populärsynthesen auf, die als Selbstpsychologisierung bzw. -anpassung der Gesellschaftsmitglieder affektgebundene, schwer durchschaubare Widerstandspotentiale gegen die totale soziale Kontrolle darstellen. Essstörungen im Jugendalter: eine Reaktionsform auf gesellschaftlichen Wandel

'Sozialepidemiologische Studien belegen eine starke säkulare Zunahme von Essstörungen im Jugendalter, insbesondere von Adipositas. In vielen Studien dominieren individualisierende Erklärungsansätze, die die Rolle sozialen Wandels für die Genese von Essstörungen verkennen. Ihre soziale Verteilung - Adipositas dominiert in sozial benachteiligten Milieus, Bulimie in den oberen Schichten - ist dabei nur ein Indikator für ihre soziale Bedingtheit. In dem Plädoyer der Verfasser für eine soziologische Interpretation sehen die Verfasser jugendliche Essstörungen als eine sozio-somatische Reaktion auf sozialen Wandel, vor allem auf den gestiegenen Anpassungsdruck an Leistung und Konkurrenz und die medial propagierten Bilder idealer Körper. Dies wirkt sich auf Körperselbstdarstellung und Identitätsbildung von Jugendlichen aus. Im Kontext veränderter Muster der alltäglichen Lebensführung begreifen die Verfasser Essstörungen als symbolische 'Wahlen' einer körperlichen Verweigerung von Ansprüchen (im Fall von Adipositas) bzw. als Überanpassung an soziale Anforderungen (im Fall von Bulimie).' (Autorenreferat)'Epidemiological studies show a considerable secular increase of eating-disorders, especially of obesity in adolescents. Most studies prefer an individualistic explanation of the facts thereby overlooking the evidence for social change as an important agent in the development of eating-disorders. Their social distribution - obesity dominates in the lower class, bulimia among female adolescents in the upper-class - is only one of the indicators for their social causation. In their plea for a sociological interpretation of eating-disorders among adolescents the authors see them as a specific socio-somatic reaction to social change, especially to the increased squeeze for adjustment to achievement and competence in the light of observed insecurities and to the public presentations of perfect bodies. This affects adolescents' identity-formation and their 'body-politics'. In the context of changed patterns of coping with life the authors see eating-disorders as a symbolic 'chosen' bodily disorder to disclaim social demands (in the case of obesity), or to over adjust to the requirements of modern social change (in the case of bulimia).' Der Beitrag der Neuen Sozialen Bewegungen zum Arbeits- und Gesundheitsschutz - eine Fallstudie zur Transformation und Verstetigung von Protestkommunikation in (in-)formellen Netzwerken

Der betriebliche Arbeits- und Gesundheitsschutz ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil gewerkschaftlichen Handelns und spielt bei den Aushandlungsprozessen um Arbeitsbedingungen durchaus eine Rolle. Nachhaltige Beschäftigungssicherung ist zudem ein Interesse, das rechtlich (bspw. im Kontext der Gefährdungsbeurteilungen) und politisch von Arbeitnehmer- wie von Arbeitgeberseite adressiert wird. Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt anhand einer Fallstudie zum Verein Arbeit und Gesundheit e.V. dar, inwiefern die Neuen Sozialen Bewegungen den Arbeits- und Gesundheitsschutz auf die Agenda von Gewerkschaften, aber auch von Interessenvertretungen und anderen betrieblichen Akteur_innen in arbeitsregulativen Prozessen setzten. Zentrales Anliegen ist es herauszuarbeiten, wie sich Protestkommunikation zu einer auf Dauer angelegten Kommunikation über den betrieblichen Arbeits- und Gesundheitsschutz formieren und so die Position in den Auseinandersetzungen um Arbeitsbedingungen stärken konnte. Dafür war der Aufbau (in-)formeller Netzwerkstrukturen, eine juristische Absicherung des Akteursstatus, das Aneignen von Fachwissen und das Schaffen von Plausibilitätszonen, die für Gewerkschaften relevant wurden, eine zentrale Voraussetzung.Health and safety at work is increasingly at the centre of trade union actions and negotiations concerning employment conditions. Furthermore, sustainable job security is of political and legal interest that needs to be addressed by employers and employees alike. The following article, based on a case study of the Verein Arbeit and Gesundheit e.V., considers to what extent new social employment as well as health and safety movements are influencing union agendas, employee representative bodies as well as plant actors’ regulative procedures. A central consideration of this paper concerns how protest communication can be transformed into a lasting communication structure dealing with employment as well as health and safety issues able to make a strong contribution to disputes surrounding employment conditions. A precondition of this is the creation of informal and formal structures, legally securing actors' status, the appropriation of professional expertise and the creation of plausibility zones relevant to trade unions

Cellular and humoral immune responses and protection against schistosomes induced by a radiation-attenuated vaccine in chimpanzees

The radiation-attenuated Schistosoma mansoni vaccine is highly effective in rodents and primates but has never been tested in humans, primarily for safety reasons. To strengthen its status as a paradigm for a human recombinant antigen vaccine, we have undertaken a small-scale vaccination and challenge experiment in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Immunological, clinical, and parasitological parameters were measured in three animals after multiple vaccinations, together with three controls, during the acute and chronic stages of challenge infection up to chemotherapeutic cure. Vaccination induced a strong in vitro proliferative response and early gamma interferon production, but type 2 cytokines were dominant by the time of challenge. The controls showed little response to challenge infection before the acute stage of the disease, initiated by egg deposition. In contrast, the responses of vaccinated animals were muted throughout the challenge period. Vaccination also induced parasite-specific immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG, which reached high levels at the time of challenge, while in control animals levels did not rise markedly before egg deposition. The protective effects of vaccination were manifested as an amelioration of acute disease and overall morbidity, revealed by differences in gamma-glutamyl transferase level, leukocytosis, eosinophilia, and hematocrit. Moreover, vaccinated chimpanzees had a 46% lower level of circulating cathodic antigen and a 38% reduction in fecal egg output, compared to controls, during the chronic phase of infection
