Fat mass and fat-free mass track from infancy to childhood:New insights in body composition programming in early life

OBJECTIVE: Early life is a critical window for adiposity programming. This study investigated whether fat mass percentage (FM%), fat mass index (FMI), abdominal fat, and fat‐free mass (FFM) in early life track into childhood and whether there are sex differences and differences between infant feeding types. METHODS: Detailed body composition was longitudinally measured by air‐displacement plethysmography, dual‐energy x‐ray absorptiometry, and abdominal ultrasound in 224 healthy, term‐born children. Measurements were divided into tertiles. Odds ratios (OR) of remaining in the highest tertile of FM%, FMI, abdominal subcutaneous and visceral fat, and FFM index (FFMI) were calculated from early life to age 4 years. RESULTS: High FM% and FMI tracked from age 3 and 6 months to age 4 years (OR = 4.34 [p = 0.002] and OR = 6.54 [p < 0.001]). High subcutaneous abdominal fat tracked from age 6 months to age 4 years (OR = 2.30 [p = 0.012]). High FFMI tracked from age 1, 3, and 6 months to age 4 years (OR = 4.16 [p = 0.005], 3.71 [p = 0.004], and 3.36 [p = 0.019]). In non‐exclusively breastfed infants, high FM% tracked from early life to age 4 years, whereas this was not the case for exclusively breastfed infants. There was no tracking in visceral fat or sex differences. CONCLUSIONS: Infants with high FM%, FMI, subcutaneous abdominal fat, and FFMI in early life are likely to remain in the highest tertile at age 4 years. Exclusive breastfeeding for 3 months is potentially protective against having high FM% at age 4 years

The development of a glucose prediction model in critically ill patients

Get PDF
Purpose: The aim of the current study is to develop a prediction model for glucose levels applicable for all patients admitted to the ICU with an expected ICU stay of at least 24 h. This model will be incorporated in a closed-loop glucose system to continuously and automatically control glucose values. Methods: Data from a previous single-center randomized controlled study was used. All patients received a FreeStyle Navigator II subcutaneous CGM system from Abbott during their ICU stay. The total dataset was randomly divided into a training set and a validation set. A glucose prediction model was developed based on historical glucose data. Accuracy of the prediction model was determined using the Mean Squared Difference (MSD), the Mean Absolute Difference (MAD) and a Clarke Error Grid (CEG). Results: The dataset included 94 ICU patients with a total of 134,673 glucose measurements points that were used for modelling. MSD was 0.410 +/- 0.495 for the model, the MAD was 5.19 +/- 2.63 and in the CEG 99.8% of the data points were in the clinically acceptable regions. Conclusion: In this study a glucose prediction model for ICU patients is developed. This study shows that it is possible to accurately predict a patient's glucose 30 min ahead based on historical glucose data. This is the first step in the development of a closed-loop glucose system. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

The article presents the preliminary characteristic of the mineral composition of chemogenic formations and clastic deposits of Snezhnaya-Mezhennogo-Illusia cave system. Chemogenic formations are composed by Mg- and Sr-calcite, aragonite, gypsum and hydromagnesite, celestite, strontianite, dolomite, goethite, rutile and zircon. Clastic sediments are composed mainly by dolomite, quartz and calcite. Same secondary minerals are observed in those parts of the cave system that have similar morphology and microclimate

Real-time volumetric lipid imaging in vivo by intravascular photoacoustics at 20 frames per second

Lipid deposition can be assessed with combined intravascular photoacoustic/ultrasound (IVPA/US) imaging. To date, the clinical translation of IVPA/US imaging has been stalled by a low imaging speed and catheter complexity. In this paper, we demonstrate imaging of lipid targets in swine coronary arteries in vivo, at a clinically useful frame rate of 20 s−1. We confirmed image contrast for atherosclerotic plaque in human samples ex vivo. The system is on a mobile platform and provides real-time data visualization during acquisition. We achieved an IVPA signal-to-noise ratio of 20 dB. These data show that clinical translation of IVPA is possible in principle

Compilation of results of the ICPPR non-Apis working group with a special focus on the bumblebee acute oral and contact toxicity ring test 2014 ICPPR Non-Apis Working Group

Although honeybee risk assessment for chemicals has been rigorously revised recently, methods and techniques available for non-apis pollinators are scarce. An ICPPR working group “non-apis” was established in 2013 to address these knowledge gaps. Acute contact tests were designed and performed with solitary bees Osmia sp. but still require further optimization. Ring tests on acute oral and contact toxicity for the bumblebee Bombus sp. were developed and performed in 2014. Thirteen European laboratories participated in the trials and in most cases control mortality was < 10% after 96h, indicating that the developed methodologies were feasible in a variety of laboratories. The oral exposure and the group contact exposure tests were each found to generate more variable LD50 estimates, whereas the endpoints obtained in the single contact tests were more consistent among laboratories. The difference in the two different contact test designs indicates the presence of a ‘housing’ effect, which makes the group housing less favorable. In addition, the use of Tween80 as a wetting agent was found to be unsuccessful

Consensus definition of advance care planning in dementia: A 33-country Delphi study.

Existing advance care planning (ACP) definitional frameworks apply to individuals with decision-making capacity. We aimed to conceptualize ACP for dementia in terms of its definition and issues that deserve particular attention. Delphi study with phases: (A) adaptation of a generic ACP framework by a task force of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC); (B) four online surveys by 107 experts from 33 countries, September 2021 to June 2022; (C) approval by the EAPC board. ACP in dementia was defined as a communication process adapted to the person's capacity, which includes, and is continued with, family if available. We identified pragmatic boundaries regarding participation and time (i.e., current or end-of-life care). Three interrelated issues that deserve particular attention were capacity, family, and engagement and communication. A communication and relationship-centered definitional framework of ACP in dementia evolved through international consensus supporting inclusiveness of persons with dementia and their family. This article offers a consensus definitional framework of advance care planning in dementia. The definition covers all stages of capacity and includes family caregivers. Particularly important are (1) capacity, (2) family, (3) engagement, and communication. Fluctuating capacity was visualized in relation to roles and engaging stakeholders
