While kinship relations in Dutch are usually introduced by a possessive determiner, Twitter users have recently observed to use a definite article in that position. To learn more about the characteristics of this construction, we performed an exploratory investigation of the definite article possession construction with Dutch kinship terms on Twitter. We analysed 100 tweets for 24 kinship terms each, and annotated for the type of pre-nominal modifier used. Results show that the phenomenon is far from peripheral, as 13.2% of all selected tweets featured a definite article. The construction was most frequent with descending and horizontal relationship terms, and with improper kin terms (i.e., terms with a non-kin meaning at least as prominent as kinship use; Dahl & Koptsjevkaja-Tamm 2001:202). These findings were explained by pointing to redundancy and the comical effect of distancing the construction creates

Who cares? Pastoral care in Dutch Protestant Parishes

Pastoral care in parishes is a rather “silent” religious practice. As a result, data regarding the quantity and quality of regular pastoral care in local churches is scarce. To address this deficiency, we added several questions about pastoral care and support to the Church Life Survey and then carried out the survey with church attenders (N = 2,854) from 30 Dutch Protestant parishes. The Passion as Public Reflexivity:How the Dutch in a Ritual-musical Event Reflect on Religious and Moral Discussions in Society

This article analyses the public significance of The Passion-a televised retelling of the Passion of Jesus, featuring pop songs and celebrities in the Dutch public sphere. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the authors demonstrate how performances like The Passion offer spaces in which the Dutch can reflect publicly on important identity issues, such as the role of Christian heritage in a supposedly secular age. The article contributes to deeper knowledge of how Dutch late-modern society deals with its secular self-understanding

Does the care given by general practitioners and midwives to patients with (imminent) miscarriage meet the wishes and expectations of the patients?

Objective: in 1989 a Dutch national guideline on (imminent) miscarriage was developed for use in general practice. A prospective recording study was carried out to determine how the patients evaluated the care they received from general practitioners (GPs) and midwives who agreed to adhere to this (imminent) miscarriage guideline and to determine the aspects that influence this evaluation. Setting: GP practices and midwifery practices in The Netherlands. Design: Prospective recording of appointments during 4 consecutive weeks in a diary by patients who contacted their GP or midwife with symptoms of (imminent) miscarriage. Study participants: Over a period of 12 months, 75 GPs and 43 midwives recorded all patients (n = 407) showing symptoms of (imminent) miscarriage. In total 265 patients had completed at least the first contact in the diary; 200 patients actually recorded all contacts. Results: Most patients gave their GP or midwife a high evaluation score (8.2 and 8.7 respectively). Yet, 20% thought that the care could be improved if the GP or midwife gave more information, was more empathetic and carried out an ultrasound scan. In determining the aspects that have most influence on the patients' evaluation, empathy and support came first, followed by involvement of the patient in decision making, putting her at ease, and the total duration of the contacts. Although patients who wanted a referral gave a lower score, this seems to be of less importance than the above mentioned aspects. Expecting and getting an ultrasound scan did not influence the patient's evaluation

Measurement of dynamical resilience indicators improves the prediction of recovery following hospitalization in older adults

\u3cp\u3eOBJECTIVES: Acute illnesses and subsequent hospital admissions present large health stressors to older adults, after which their recovery is variable. The concept of physical resilience offers opportunities to develop dynamical tools to predict an individual's recovery potential. This study aimed to investigate if dynamical resilience indicators based on repeated physical and mental measurements in acutely hospitalized geriatric patients have added value over single baseline measurements in predicting favorable recovery.\u3c/p\u3e\u3cp\u3eDESIGN: Intensive longitudinal study.\u3c/p\u3e\u3cp\u3eSETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: 121 patients (aged 84.3 ± 6.2 years, 60% female) admitted to the geriatric ward for acute illness.\u3c/p\u3e\u3cp\u3eMEASUREMENTS: In addition to preadmission characteristics (frailty, multimorbidity), in-hospital heart rate and physical activity were continuously monitored with a wearable sensor. Momentary well-being (life satisfaction, anxiety, discomfort) was measured by experience sampling 4 times per day. The added value of dynamical indicators of resilience was investigated for predicting recovery at hospital discharge and 3 months later.\u3c/p\u3e\u3cp\u3eRESULTS: 31% of participants satisfied the criteria of good recovery at hospital discharge and 50% after 3 months. A combination of a frailty index, multimorbidity, Clinical Frailty Scale, and or gait speed predicted good recovery reasonably well on the short term [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.79], but only moderately after 3 months (AUC = 0.70). On addition of dynamical resilience indicators, the AUC for predicting good 3-month recovery increased to 0.79 (P = .03). Variability in life satisfaction and anxiety during the hospital stay were independent predictors of good 3-month recovery [odds ratio (OR) = 0.24, P = .01, and OR = 0.54, P = .04, respectively].\u3c/p\u3e\u3cp\u3eCONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: These results highlight that measurements capturing the dynamic functioning of multiple physiological systems have added value in assessing physical resilience in clinical practice, especially those monitoring mental responses. Improved monitoring and prediction of physical resilience could help target intensive treatment options and subsequent geriatric rehabilitation to patients who will most likely benefit from them.\u3c/p\u3
