Recent history and the development of the E>epartment of Science of Religion and Missiology (Sec A), 1979- 1992The ‘recent phase’ in the history of this Department started with the author’s appointment as Head in 1979. In his inaugural speech he recognised the need to restructure Science of Religion (within the Faculty of Theology) to the formal norms of theology. He visualised a theological Science of Religion which would reach its apogee in a theologia religionis and not a philosophy of religion. Recent history has seen changes in curricula to conform to Section A’s curriculum reform project (which started in the early eighties). The Department even gained a subject - Evangelistics. This article gives an overview of teaching done since 1979. Current attempts to introduce Science of Religion to the Faculty of Arts, as a non-theological subject, areoutlined

Paradigms and progress in theology: A perspective on the HRSC conference of April 1988The title refers to a conference believed to be the first interdisciplinary meeting on said theme in South Africa held under the auspices of the South African HumanSciences Research Council in Pretoria last year. Future developments in this field may prove it a major happening in South African theology and methodology yet. An anthology of selected papers read appeared from the press recently. This article contains a number of abstracts made from the book and brief discussions of papers thus abstracted. A basic hesitancy pertaining to the meaning and encompass of th e concep t ‘paradigm ’ as well as a widespread uncertainty regarding theology’s accountability towards science are noted. Fears of dimensional reduction are expressed

Harmful Algal Bloom Characterization at Ultra-High Spatial and Temporal Resolution Using Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Citation: Van der Merwe, D., & Price, K. P. (2015). Harmful Algal Bloom Characterization at Ultra-High Spatial and Temporal Resolution Using Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Toxins, 7(4), 1065-1078. doi:10.3390/toxins7041065Harmful algal blooms (HABs) degrade water quality and produce toxins. The spatial distribution of HAbs may change rapidly due to variations wind, water currents, and population dynamics. Risk assessments, based on traditional sampling methods, are hampered by the sparseness of water sample data points, and delays between sampling and the availability of results. There is a need for local risk assessment and risk management at the spatial and temporal resolution relevant to local human and animal interactions at specific sites and times. Small, unmanned aircraft systems can gather color-infrared reflectance data at appropriate spatial and temporal resolutions, with full control over data collection timing, and short intervals between data gathering and result availability. Data can be interpreted qualitatively, or by generating a blue normalized difference vegetation index (BNDVI) that is correlated with cyanobacterial biomass densities at the water surface, as estimated using a buoyant packed cell volume (BPCV). Correlations between BNDVI and BPCV follow a logarithmic model, with r(2)-values under field conditions from 0.77 to 0.87. These methods provide valuable information that is complimentary to risk assessment data derived from traditional risk assessment methods, and could help to improve risk management at the local level

The Department of Science of Religion and Missiology (Sec A), University of Pretoria, 1917-1978The Transvaal University College began its Faculty of Theology in 1917 in co-operation with the Presbyterian Church and the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk. A Presbyterian minister, Prof E MacMillan, lectured from 1917 till 1934. This marked the end of Presbyterian participation. In the next period, 1935-1937, the Department suffered from a controversy between the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk and its new partner, the Nederduitsch Hervormde of Gereformeerde Kerk. The issue was solved when the Faculty divided into two sections, Section A for the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk and Section B for the Nederduitsch Hervormde of G ereformeerde Kerk. Prof H P Wolmarans was appointed to the chair of Science of Religion (Sec A) in 1938 and served as head of the Department till 1959. He was succeeded by Prof F J van Zyl in 1960, who served till 1978

The results of a study of the degree of workhardening on stainless steel Types 304, 409, 430 and Type 3CR12 corrosion resisting steel due to cold work of forming are presented in this paper. Analytical inelastic stress-strain relationships are established for virgin tensile specimens. An equation for predicting the yield strength of comers are developed

Tension between school governing bodies and education authorities in South Africa and proposed resolutions thereof.

The success of a country’s education system depends to a large extent on the mutual trust and co-operation existing between all partners. However, numerous documented incidents in the media have confirmed that there is a field of tension between school governing bodies of public schools in South Africa and the Department of Education, which is of great concern to all partners in the system, especially as these parent bodies were established by the current government to be partners in the management of their children’s schools. This empirical investigation was undertaken to identify and analyse the origin and extent of the tension and to suggest practical and workable solutions to defuse the situation. The views of respondents from both parties were elicited and the results confirmed the existence of tension and mistrust
