Green structure plans in the urban landscape; the role of green space after the Covid-19 pandemic

After the recent pandemic of Covid 19, the issue of green space in the urban landscape has gained more attention. Since the outbreak of Covid 19 a new dimension has been added to the function and role of green space in the urban landscape; how can green space create conditions for healthy environments for people? In this paper I will investigate in what ways existing design knowledge on urban green structure plans can contribute to this new demand from society and what role greenways can play in the process of planning and design. The research methods are mixed; comparative analysis of plans, fieldwork and research on existing literature. All fit into the case study approach as integrative research approach in landscape architecture. In the first part I will analyse the relation between pandemics and organisation of space in the daily environment; what are spatial factors related to form, function and use of the daily living environment that can influence pandemics and the public health in general? In the second part a brief overview of urban green structure plans will be given; history, content and context of landscape plans and green structure plans in the Netherlands. Here the research question is how existing design knowledge on the issue can be used in these new context. In the third part the implications for planning and design will be elaborated. At what levels of intervention and how can green space be integrated in the making of urban green structure plans? One of the conclusions is that the design knowledge and approach developed in urban green structure plans could be further elaborated towards integration of public health by focussing on structure which includes the road system. Further attention is needed for the role of mobility and traffic systems; separating car traffic, public transport and slow traffic seems to be an option with more attention for slow traffic in the urban landscape

Public space and public health related to green space in urban landscape architecture

In this paper I will investigate relations between public space and public health in the context of the recent pandemic Covid-19 for the urban landscape. Goal of the research is to explore how mitigating and maybe even prevention of pandemics can be achieved through planning and design of urban public space. The main research question is how green space and greenways have been used and can be used in the creation of healthy environments for people in the times after the pandemic. The research methods are mixed, explorative and experimental. Overall the research methods are based on the principles of the case study approach. In the first part, a brief overview of existing publications will be analysed with special attention to the relation between public space and green space. In the second part the issue of public health and public space with special attention to criteria, norms and guidelines will be explored. How can use and spatial aspects of public space create conditions for improving public health? In the last part this information will be integrated into a design approach and elaborated at the scale of the neighbourhood in a case study in the city of Utrecht by explorative research and experimental design. One of the conclusions is that new approaches should be founded on the one hand on evidence-based research on the relations between pandemic and daily living environment, on the other hand on experimental design and explorative research

Anyone wishing to track down the biography of Stravinsky's opera-oratorio, Oedipus Rex, can do so fairly easily. Walsh's comments are wonderfully perceptive on the staging of Oedipus, the austere, "still life" conception envisioned initially by the composer and then also by Cocteau. Stravinsky's idea of a translation "backwards" from secular French to sacred, "monumental" Latin is discussed at length, as is the neoclassicism of the music. But it is nonetheless with the larger aesthetic issues that Walsh is primarily concerned-above all, with Stravinsky's vehement anti-individualistic stance at the time. Uncomfortable with propositions of self-expression and expressivity, the composer sought to restore distance, order, and a sense of objectivity, envisioning these as part of a removed and idealized Classical past; his stance was anti-progressive, anti-Schoenberg, anti-modernist, anti-Wagner, and so forth

The 2018 Iraqi federal elections: a population in transition?

On 12 May 2018, Iraqis went to the polls to vote for their next parliament, prime minister and cabinet. The elections delivered a surprise, with Muqtada al-Sadr’s Saairun Coalition winning the most seats of any bloc, although not enough to form a government alone. The results also carried a number of clear messages about the state of Iraqi politics, not least the low turnout and the decision of many Iraqis to boycott the elections, reflecting a general malaise and disillusion with the current political leadership and bloated bureaucracy. The revelations of electoral fraud and the very low turnout (of 44.5 percent) indicate that it will be difficult for the political class to overcome its reputation for maintaining the status quo – and for the citizenry to accept it. The Maros River and its Potential for Landscape Development

In this paper we research how the approach of \u27greenway planning\u27 could be elaborated in the case of manorial house systems located alongside the Maros (Mures) river in Transylvania. The Maros river is part of the Danube watershed and crosses a large part of Transylvania, roughly from East to West. Certain sections of the river, spanning 876 km from its source to its mouth, can be well differentiated both from a geographic and a social aspect. First of all we will analyse the historical role of the river in the landscape development of the area in the long run. Not only was the river the core of the watershed but it functioned also as a waterway for transport of goods and was used for energy production by means of a series of watermills. From the 16th century on a series of mansions with designed gardens have been developed, which can be considered as a new \u27cultural\u27 layer upon the landscape. We devise some cases in which contemporary use and potentials for water storage, leisure, tourism and fish ponds are being integrated into these historical settings. The results are used as a basis for development of a landscape strategy in the long run. Such an approach refers to the historical and cultural backgrounds of the land but translates them to a contemporary situation and goals in the long run; conservation by transformation. All together contributing to landscapes that provide new opportunities for healthy conditions for living and working environments for people

Greenway Planning and Landscape Structure; Some Theoretical Backgrounds

In this paper we will put forward some theoretical backgrounds on greenway planning as planning and design intervention in landscape architecture. In order to analyse the theoretical context of greenway planning, we first start with a short overview of terminology. In the next step we will investigate a number of case studies on how the principles of greenway planning have been applied and how it relates to other aspects of plan making in landscape architecture. The approach of greenway planning is very much based on linear systems and networks where \u27structure\u27 plays a key role. We will put special emphasis on the concept of \u27structure\u27 both in the existing landscape and as part of plan making. The goal of the paper is to show how greenway planning relates to land, landscape and landscape architecture. The research approach is based on the principles of case study research (Zeisel, 2006). A number of case studies will be analysed and related to texts and reflections
