Assessing the principles of spatial competition between stores within a retail network
Abstract This study investigates the impact of driving time and retail agglomerations on consumer store choice within a retail network. A pairwise comparison of confluencing store trade areas is conducted based on loyalty card information and exit questionnaires for six retailers operating in different product categories in Belgium. Results show that there is a stronger emphasis in the preference hierarchy on driving time towards a store for the daily goods retailer. Moreover, there is varying intra-network spatial competition depending on the type of location strategy pursued by the different retailers. Results show that for some retailers retail agglomeration effects are more outspoken than for others. However, impact of driving time on consumer intra-network store choice was independent of retail agglomeration size. Finally, results indicate that opening stores outside the pursued location strategy should be approached with care as significant impacts on sales cannibalization can emerge within the store network. These findings are important for crafting an overall expansion strategy for expansion managers as well as for marketing managers occupied with network changes at operational level
Do mobile phone data provide a better denominator in crime rates and improve spatiotemporal predictions of crime?
This article assesses whether ambient population is a more suitable population-at-risk measure for crime types with mobile targets than residential population for the purpose of intelligence-led policing applications. Specifically, the potential use of ambient population as a crime rate denominator and predictor for predictive policing models is evaluated, using mobile phone data (with a total of 9,397,473 data points) as a proxy. The results show that ambient population correlates more strongly with crime than residential population. Crime rates based on ambient population designate different problem areas than crime rates based on residential population. The prediction performance of predictive policing models can be improved by using ambient population instead of residential population. These findings support that ambient population is a more suitable population-at-risk measure, as it better reflects the underlying dynamics in spatiotemporal crime trends. Its use has therefore much as-of-yet unused potential not only for criminal research and theory testing, but also for intelligence-led policy and practice
Human-Computer Interaction for BCI Games: Usability and User Experience
Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) come with a lot of issues, such as delays, bad recognition, long training times, and cumbersome hardware. Gamers are a large potential target group for this new interaction modality, but why would healthy subjects want to use it? BCI provides a combination of information and features that no other input modality can offer. But for general acceptance of this technology, usability and user experience will need to be taken into account when designing such systems. This paper discusses the consequences of applying knowledge from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) to the design of BCI for games. The integration of HCI with BCI is illustrated by research examples and showcases, intended to take this promising technology out of the lab. Future research needs to move beyond feasibility tests, to prove that BCI is also applicable in realistic, real-world settings

Thioguanine is Effective as Maintenance Therapy for Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Prospective Multicentre Registry Study
Background and Aims: Thioguanine is a well-tolerated and effective therapy for inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] patients. Prospective effectiveness data are needed to substantiate the role of thioguanine as a maintenance therapy for IBD. Methods: IBD patients who previously failed azathioprine or mercaptopurine and initiated thioguanine were prospectively followed for 12 months starting when corticosteroid-free clinical remission was achieved (Harvey-Bradshaw Index [HBI] ≤ 4 or Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index [SCCAI] ≤ 2). The primary endpoint was corticosteroid-free clinical remission throughout 12 months. Loss of clinical remission was defined as SCCAI > 2 or HBI > 4, need of surgery, escalation of therapy, initiation of corticosteroids or study discontinuation. Additional endpoints were adverse events, drug survival, physician global assessment [PGA] and quality of life [QoL]. Results: Sustained corticosteroid-free clinical remission at 3, 6 or 12 months was observed in 75 [69%], 66 [61%] and 49 [45%] of 108 patients, respectively. Thioguanine was continued in 86 patients [80%] for at least 12 months. Loss of response [55%] included escalation to biologicals in 15%, corticosteroids in 10% and surgery in 3%. According to PGA scores, 82% of patients were still in remission after 12 months and QoL scores remained stable. Adverse events leading to discontinuation were reported in 11%, infections in 10%, myelo- and hepatotoxicity each in 6%, and portal hypertension in 1% of patients. Conclusion: Sustained corticosteroid-free clinical remission over 12 months was achieved in 45% of IBD patients on monotherapy with thioguanine. A drug continuation rate of 80%, together with favourable PGA and QoL scores, underlines the tolerability and effectiveness of thioguanine for IBD
Combination of a six microRNA expression profile with four clinicopathological factors for response prediction of systemic treatment in patients with advanced colorectal cancer
Background First line chemotherapy is effective in 75 to 80% of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). We studied whether microRNA (miR) expression profiles can predict treatment outcome for first line fluoropyrimidine containing systemic therapy in patients with mCRC. Methods MiR expression levels were determined by next generation sequencing from snap frozen tumor samples of 88 patients with mCRC. Predictive miRs were selected with penalized logistic regression and posterior forward selection. The prediction co-efficients of the miRs were re-estimated and validated by real-time quantitative PCR in an independent cohort of 81 patients with mCRC. Results Expression levels of miR-17-5p, miR-20a-5p, miR-30a-5p, miR-92a-3p, miR-92b-3p and miR-98-5p in combination with age, tumor differentiation, adjuvant therapy and type of systemic treatment, were predictive for clinical benefit in the training cohort with an AUC of 0.78. In the validation cohort the addition of the six miR signature to the four clinicopathological factors demonstrated a significant increased AUC for predicting treatment response versus those with stable disease (SD) from 0.79 to 0.90. A genetic variation map for chicken with 2.8 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms
We describe a genetic variation map for the chicken genome containing 2.8 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms ( SNPs). This map is based on a comparison of the sequences of three domestic chicken breeds ( a broiler, a layer and a Chinese silkie) with that of their wild ancestor, red jungle fowl. Subsequent experiments indicate that at least 90% of the variant sites are true SNPs, and at least 70% are common SNPs that segregate in many domestic breeds. Mean nucleotide diversity is about five SNPs per kilobase for almost every possible comparison between red jungle fowl and domestic lines, between two different domestic lines, and within domestic lines - in contrast to the notion that domestic animals are highly inbred relative to their wild ancestors. In fact, most of the SNPs originated before domestication, and there is little evidence of selective sweeps for adaptive alleles on length scales greater than 100 kilobases
