    Memory culture in the making: the Heidelberg Catechism in the memory of the Dutch Reformed Church (1862-1937)

    This article explores the Heidelberg Catechism in the memory of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) between 1862 and 1937, with specific focus on the events of 1862. By making the Heidelberg Catechism the point of focus the article’s contribution is not by way of answering the “what happened”-questions related to the period, but rather in terms of an analysis of how “what happened” had been remembered over a period of seventy five years by the DRC. In order to do so, the first two sections of the article deals with the theory of memory, the development of memory culture in communities, and the significance of such an analysis for historical thinking. The third part provides four sets of examples of Heidelberg Catechism recollections as a contribution to analyses of the memory culture of the DRC in the late 19th and early 20th centuries

    In the title compound [systematic name: tricarbonyl(η6-7-methoxy-2-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1-benzopyran)chromium(0)], [Cr(C16H16O2)(CO)3], the Cr(CO)3 unit is coordinated by the phenyl­ene ring of the flavan ligand, exhibiting a three-legged piano-stool conformation, with a point to plane distance of 1.750 (1) Å. The phenyl ring is twisted away from the fused ring system by 36.49 (5)° (r.m.s. deviation = 0.027 Å; fitted atoms are the C6 ring and the attached fused-ring C and O atoms).     In the title compound, [Cr(C15H10O2)(CO)3], the Cr(CO)3 unit exhibits a three-legged piano-stool conformation. The chromium metal centre is coordinated by the phenyl ring of the flavone ligand [Cr—(phenyl centroid) distance = 1.709 (1) Å]. The ligand is approximately planar, the dihedral angles between the γ-pyrone ring and the phenyl ring and between the γ-pyrone and the phenyl­ene ring being 2.91 (5) and 3.90 (5)°, respectively. The mol­ecular packing shows π–π stacking between the flavone ligands of neighbouring mol­ecules

    Two strains of grapevine leafroll-associated virus 2 (GLRaV-2) were obtained by mechanical transmission from grapevines to Nicotiana benthantiana. The strains, designated 94/970 and 93/955, consistently differed with regard to the development of symptoms. The first induced chlorotic and occasional white-necrotic local lesions while the second induced chlorotic followed by metallic-opalescent, solid necrotic local lesions. The strains were indistinguishable with regard to the molecular weight of their capsid proteins or serologically. A difference in the pattern of minor dsRNA bands was consistently observed

    Incidence of hypoglycaemia in the South African population with diabetes: Results from the IDMPS Wave 7 study

    Objectives: Management of diabetes is a balancing act of preventing a state of hyperglycaemia while avoiding episodes of hypoglycaemia. Limited information is currently available on the incidence of hypoglycaemia in South African people diagnosed with diabetes. Data regarding the management of diabetes and incidence of hypoglycaemia in the South African population was collected as part of Wave 7 of the International Diabetes Management Practices Study (IDMPS).Design and methods: During this observational study the first 10 adult individuals with type 2 diabetes and the first five adult individuals with type 1 diabetes presenting to a study site during the two-week study period were enrolled.Setting: Patients were enrolled from the private healthcare sector in South Africa only.Subjects: A total of 445 individuals (49 diagnosed with T1D, 396 diagnosed with T2D) were included.Outcome measures: Glycated haemoglobin and hypoglycaemia data were recorded for each patient.Results: Of the patients who reported experiencing hypoglycaemia, 48.6% (17/35) among T1D individuals and 67.8% (40/71) among T2D individuals experienced hypoglycaemia over a four-week period. Furthermore, in patients who discontinued insulin treatment (n = 11), fear of hypoglycaemia was reported to influence adherence to insulin treatment by 27.3% in T1D and T2D individuals. Of the 148 patients not achieving their HbA1c target, 23.0% reported fear of hypoglycaemia as a reason.Conclusions: This report demonstrates the need to address hypoglycaemia and fear of hypoglycaemia in the South African diabetes population

This was done to study the developmental morphology of the sorghum grain. The period immediately following fertilization is a time of rapid development in the sorghum caryopsis. The endosperm expands crush i ng the nucellus and in the nonbirdres i stant sorghums the inner integument is also crushed during this expansion. The cells of the ovary wal 1 expand and elongate to form the peri carp . By the soft dough stage the endosperm has gained most of its storage material and thereafter there is a considerable loss of moisture . During the early stages of development the endosperm cell walls were extensively pitted which could allow for translocation . However, once the period of translocation was over the cell walls became intact

The two nitrile groups are almost coplanar with the phthalonitrile ring except for one of the N atoms which deviates from the plane by 0.125 (4) Å. One of the tert-butyl groups is disordered over two orientations, with refined occupancies of 0.814 (6) and 0.186 (6). Intra­molecular C—H⋯O inter­actions stabilize the molecular structure.
