    Dual Microsporidial Infection Due to Vittaforma corneae and Encephalitozoon hellem in a Patient with AIDS

    A 46-year-old human immunodeficiency virus-infected Swiss citizen living in Tanzania presented with respiratory, abdominal, and urogenital complaints. Microsporidial spores were isolated from urine and a sinunasal aspirate and were propagated in MRC-5 cell cultures. Western blot analysis and riboprinting identified the sinunasal isolate as Encephalitozoon hellem. Electron microscopic investigation of the urine isolate revealed spores with diplokaryotic nuclei and five to six isofilar coils of the polar tube and sporonts with two or three diplokarya. All stages were enveloped by two membranes, corresponding to a cisterna of host endoplasmic reticulum studded with ribosomes. These characteristics have been described for the genus Vittaforma. Western blot analysis of this isolate revealed a banding pattern identical to that of the Vittaforma corneae reference isolate. Part of the small subunit rRNA gene was amplified, sequenced (239 base pairs), and found to be identical to that of V. corneae. This is the second isolation of V. corneae and the first description of urinary tract infection due to V. corneae in a patient with AID

    The annual Four-Day March in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, in July 2006 was cancelled after the first day because two participants had died, men aged 65 and 57 years, and many had become unwell while walking in unusually high ambient temperatures. However, the cause of death of the two who died turned out to be cardiovascular and not heat-related. The case of two of the people that became unwell, men aged 58 and 59 years, respectively, shows that heat stroke and heat exhaustion were important causative conditions. Heat-related illnesses are relatively uncommon in the Netherlands due to its temperate climate. Heat stroke is the most severe of these and associated with a high mortality rate if not recognised and treated promptly. The primary cause is accumulation of heat due either to diminished loss or increased endogenous heat production, such as by physical exertion. Heat exhaustion is caused by salt or water depletion

Les méthodes moléculaires (PCR) sont devenues l'examen de choix pour les agents de maladies sexuellement transmissibles tels que Chlamydia, HPV, voire gonocoque, ainsi que pour détecter certaines infections congénitales durant la grossesse (toxoplasmose, CMV).     Preferential food selection in protists is well documented, but we still lack basic understanding on how protist predation modifies the taxonomic and functional composition of bacterial communities. We conducted feeding trials using leaf-associated cercomonad Cercozoa by incubating them on a standardized, diverse bacterial community washed from plant leaves. We used a shotgun metagenomics approach to investigate the taxonomic and functional changes of the bacterial community after five days protist predation on bacteria. Predation-induced shifts in bacterial community composition could be linked to phenotypic protist traits. Protist reproduction rate, morphological plasticity and cell speed were most important in determining bacterial community composition. Analyses of co-occurrence patterns showed less complex correlations between bacterial taxa in the protist-grazed treatments with a higher proportion of positive correlations than in non-grazed controls, suggesting that predation reduced the influence of strong competitors. Protist predation influenced 14 metabolic core functions including membrane transport from which type VI secretion systems were in particular upregulated. In view of the functional importance of bacterial communities in the phyllosphere and rhizosphere of plants, a more detailed understanding of predator-prey interactions, changes in microbial composition and function, and subsequent repercussions on plant performance are clearly required
