Steps in gas-surface reactions
Heterogeneous catalysis is essential to many industrial applications. These catalysts are often comprised of supported nanoparticles, which contain various different surface sites. For some reactions, the presence of specific surface sights dominates the overall reactivity. Fundamental insight into the influence of different surface sites on the surface reaction dynamics may lead to better catalyst design in the future. In this thesis, we combine ultra-high vacuum techniques and (curved) single crystal surfaces to study surface structure effects relevant to heterogeneous catalysis. We study how step edges on a platinum surface affect (elementary) reactions that occur in oxygen reduction: hydrogen dissociation, hydrogen recombination, and oxygen reduction. Coherent electronic transfer in quantum dot systems using adiabatic passage
We describe a scheme for using an all-electrical, rapid, adiabatic population
transfer between two spatially separated dots in a triple-quantum dot system.
The electron spends no time in the middle dot and does not change its energy
during the transfer process. Although a coherent population transfer method,
this scheme may well prove useful in incoherent electronic computation (for
example quantum-dot cellular automata) where it may provide a coherent
advantage to an otherwise incoherent device. It can also be thought of as a
limiting case of type II quantum computing, where sufficient coherence exists
for a single gate operation, but not for the preservation of superpositions
after the operation. We extend our analysis to the case of many intervening
dots and address the issue of transporting quantum information through a

Adsorption induced reconstruction of the Cu(110) surface
The formation of the O/Cu(110)-(2 × 1) and H/Cu(110)-(1 × 2) superstructures has been investigated by a LEED beam profile analysis. The oxygen induced reconstruction proceeds at later stages by creation of holes on flat terraces. This could not be observed at the hydrogen induced missing row reconstruction. The formation of the missing row structure proceeds most probably via nucleation at steps and subsequent growth of (1 × 2) islands. Full genome sequences of all nine Chlamydia psittaci genotype reference strains
Chlamydia psittaci primarily infects birds, but zoonotic transmission occurs in people in close contact with infected birds. The clinical outcome ranges from inapparent disease to pneumonia. Train Positioning Using Video Odometry
Reliable Data Systems have developed a video-based odometry system that enables trains to measure velocities and distances travelled without the need for trackside infrastructure. The Study Group was asked to investigate ways of improving the accuracy of such a system, and to suggest any improvements that might be made. The work performed in the week followed along these strands: (a). Elimination of errors in video odometery induced by pitch and height; (b) Robust calculation of (i) the train velocity and (ii) the track curvature; (c). Accurate determination of the position of a train on a track by assimilating Curvature information; (d). The development, implementation and early learnings of a training program to advance interest in behavioral research careers among undergraduate BIPOC students majoring in psychology.
OBJECTIVES: Black, indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) remain underrepresented in research occupations. This report discusses a collaboration to train undergraduate BIPOC students in clinical research between a public health institute, two medical schools, and a historically Black College or University (HBCU). This nine-month program trained BIPOC undergraduates in research methodology, psychology, and addiction science, and immersed trainees in real-world research. The program included didactic seminars, experiential activities, and a mentored research project culminating in a poster and oral presentation.
METHODS: Key learnings, program satisfaction survey results, and preliminary outcomes from the first three program cohorts (N = 6 students) are presented. This program addressed several barriers hypothesized to contribute to the limited number of BIPOC students pursuing research careers, including mentorship from BIPOC faculty and financial concerns.
RESULTS: Students reported moderate to high satisfaction with the program and endorsed gaining new research skills. Limitations and future directions are discussed.
CONCLUSION: The expansion of the BIPOC health and research workforce is an urgent priority given the importance of BIPOC professionals to the health of our nation.
