The Aim of this dissertation subject is to assess the efficacy of trial drug ā€˜Kanai Kiruthamā€™ for ā€˜Suzhi Kanamā€™ without any adverse effects. ā€¢ The Etiopathogenesis and symptoms of Suzhi Kanam have been correlated with that of childhood Asthma with evidences of literature. ā€¢ Clinical diagnosis and selection of cases was based on clinical features described in Balavagadam Text book and also using questionnaire. ā€¢ The Medicine Chosen for Treatment and management of Suzhi Kanam was Kanai Kirutham 5 to 10 ml (according to age) internally, twice a day, before food. ā€¢ The Trial drug selection is based on its siddha pharmacological action to pacify the deranged vatham, pitham and kabam and also due to its Immunomodulatory and anti-asthmatic effect of ingredients. ā€¢ Fifty Children (20 In-patients and 30 Out-patients) were diagnosed with Suzhi Kanam clinically and they were observed for clinical diagnosis, laboratory diagnosis, Peak expiratory flow rate during the treatment and the results were dealt in the Proforma. ā€¢ The treatment covers Administration of trial drug according to the age and also includes simple Asanas, educating the patients and their parents about childhood asthma and its management, adherence to treatment and dispel fear and misconceptions. ā€¢ The documentation of observations made during the clinical study showed that the drug is clinically effective. ā€¢ The Preliminary GC Analysis of aqueous extract of Kanai Kirutham showed the Presence of Phytochemicals such as Alkaloids, Saponins, Glycosides, Carbohydrates and Triterpenoids. ā€¢ In Biochemical analysis the trial medicine had Ferrous iron which adds to the clinical prognosis of Suzhi kanam by Kanai kirutham. ā€¢ Antimicrobial activities of Kanai kirutham showed that it inhibited the Growth of Bacterial strains against Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. ā€¢ In the Pharmacological analysis, the trial drug Kanai kirutham had significant Acute anti-inflammatory action, and also had Anti-pyretic, Anti-spasmodic, Anti-Histamine action which by the virtue of controlling the airway inflammation help to improve the Patients quality of life With these benefits Kanai Kirutham can be deemed as an effective Drug for Suzhikanam (Childhood asthma). CONCLUSION: The Global burden of Respiratory Allergies in children, increasing prevalence and its impact in reducing the quality of life in children has prompted the author to choose an efficient and nutritive drug which is believed to influence the Immune System. The treatment of suzhi kanam with kanai kirutham has showed good response with no adverse effect and ensures to be safe, effective and simple to administer. Therefore it is concluded that the trial drug ā€œkanai kiruthamā€ along with the modalities of Pranayama, Yogasanas and patient education will benefit the society and meet patientā€™s and familyā€™s expectations of satisfactory Asthma care in children

The traditional Siddha system of medicine was made available to common people by saints of south India called as Siddhars. While the timeline of its origin seems to be unpredictable, this ancient medicine interrelates nature and human beings in terms of five basic elements or Pancha bootham viz, earth, water, fire, air and space. Presence of all these five basic elements in the human body and universe in a balanced proportion seem to govern the three vital humours of our body called Vatham, Pitham and Kapham. Any alterations in any of these humours is said to be the cause of Dosham or disease. Hence the Material Medica of this system consists of herbal origin(Mooligai), Mineral origin (Thathu) and animal origin of both land and ocean (Jeevam). According to the Siddha philosophy, these natural resources are the constitutions of these five basic elements and therefore have the ability to prevent and treat the Doshams (diseases) that are caused due to the altered humours. Parpam a potent Siddha formulation with a shelf life of 100 years is usually prepared by grinding mineral or animal sources with herbs followed by a process called Pudam(Incineration). Muthuchippi parpam (Calcinated shell of Pearl oyster) is one such drug of marine origin which has been indicated in the Siddha literature for a wide variety of diseases. This review article analysis the scientific facts behind the traditional use of Muthuchippi parpam

The Siddha system is the most ancient medical system. According to Siddha medicine, the human body is a replica of the universe. This system believes that all objects are made up of 5 basic elements such as earth, water, fire, air, and space. The food which human consumes is also made of these five elements and they constitute the trihumours vatham, Pitham and kabam. The proportion of elements present in drug vary and their preponderance is responsible for certain activities and therapeutic effects. Siddha medicine emphasizes that medical treatment is oriented not merely to disease but has to consider the patientā€™s environment, age, sex, race, mental frame, habitat, diet, physiological constitution, etc. This article explores the nature of body constitution, susceptible diseases, and taste impact on trihumoural harmony

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the teratogenic effect of Nilavembu Kudineer (NVK) by testing in zebrafish embryo (Danio rerio). Methods: The study consisted of 30 embryos/culture plate/dose concentration containing a series of diluted decoction of NVK ranging from 10 Ī¼g to 640 Ī¼g/ml, and the embryo development was monitored at specific time points. The parameters such as developmental abnormality and adverse events were monitored at 24 hourly intervals for 96 h. Results: The study results showed 100% hatching and survival of embryos with no significant abnormalities in the extension of study from 96 to 120 h post-fertilization examinations. Conclusion: NVK did not have teratogenic potential on testing it in various concentrations on zebrafish embryos validating its safety during pregnancy
