Selection in initial and return migration: Evidence from moves across Spanish cities

This paper investigates the sorting of more productive workers into denser cities using administrative data for Spain that follow individuals continuously throughout their working lives. Migrants who move to denser cities are positively selected in terms of education, occupational skills, and individual productivity as proxied by premigration position in the local earnings distribution. However, not everyone is able to benefit equally from denser cities and this leads to a second round of sorting. Returnees are not only exante less productive than permanent migrants, but are also those who, following the first move, have least boosted up their earnings in denser cities.selection; urban migration; return migration; skill sorting

Machine learning techniques for identification using mobile and social media data

Networked access and mobile devices provide near constant data generation and collection. Users, environments, applications, each generate different types of data; from the voluntarily provided data posted in social networks to data collected by sensors on mobile devices, it is becoming trivial to access big data caches. Processing sufficiently large amounts of data results in inferences that can be characterized as privacy invasive. In order to address privacy risks we must understand the limits of the data exploring relationships between variables and how the user is reflected in them. In this dissertation we look at data collected from social networks and sensors to identify some aspect of the user or their surroundings. In particular, we find that from social media metadata we identify individual user accounts and from the magnetic field readings we identify both the (unique) cellphone device owned by the user and their course-grained location. In each project we collect real-world datasets and apply supervised learning techniques, particularly multi-class classification algorithms to test our hypotheses. We use both leave-one-out cross validation as well as k-fold cross validation to reduce any bias in the results. Throughout the dissertation we find that unprotected data reveals sensitive information about users. Each chapter also contains a discussion about possible obfuscation techniques or countermeasures and their effectiveness with regards to the conclusions we present. Overall our results show that deriving information about users is attainable and, with each of these results, users would have limited if any indication that any type of analysis was taking place

El Dr. Veterinario Pedro Mercader Vilardell, nació en Vilamarí (Girona) en 1929, Veterinario por Madrid (1948-54). Hizo el doctorado y bacteriología en el P.B.A., hasta 1956. En Barcelona fue Técnico Veterinario en Laboratorios IVEN, hasta 1974. Por oposición en 1975, Jefe del Laboratorio de Sanidad Veterinaria. En 1976 ingresó en el Cuerpo Nacional para ser inspector Provincial de Sanidad Veterinaria de Barcelona. En 1979, "Cap de Servei de Higiene Alimentària i Zoonosi". En 1980, "Subdirector General de Salut Pública". De 1981 a 1988. "Director General de Salut Pública de Catalunya", y hasta 1995 "Assessor del Conseller de Sanitat de Catalunya"

Presidentes de honor del Colegio de Veterinarios de Barcelona

En el trancurso del siglo XX, el Colegio de Barcelona ha tenido 4 personalidades que, por sus servicios prestados al mismo, fueron nombrados Presidentes de Honor. Estas personalidades, fueron las siguientes: Julian Mut Mandilago (1855-1929), Coronel Veterinario. Josep Elias de Molins (1848-1928), Abogado y Economista. Salvador Riera Planaguma (1899-1970), Veterinario y Presidente de Honor de la Academia de Ciencias Veterinarias de Cataluña y Josep Séculi Brillas (1917-1998), Veterinario y Presidente del Colegio durante 23 años (1954-77). Aquí solo haremos un pequeño estudio de los dos primeros (Mut y Elias de Molins), ya que de los dos restantes (Riera y Séculi) ya se han hecho muchos trabajos sobre su vida

Oligohidramnios asociado a complicaciones perinatales en el hospital Víctor Lazarte Echegaray en el periodo 2010 - 2014

Determinar si el oligohidramnios es un factor asociado a las complicaciones perinatales en el Hospital IV Víctor Lazarte Echegaray. Material y Métodos: Se llevó a cabo un estudio de tipo analítico, observacional, retrospectivo de cohortes. La población de estudio estuvo constituida por 60 gestantes según criterios de inclusión y exclusión establecidos, distribuidos en dos grupos: con y sin oligohidramnios. Resultados: El analisis estadístico sobre las variables en estudio como condiciones asociadas fue: Apgar bajo al nacer (OR: 2.1; p>0.05), bajo peso al nacer (OR: 1 p>0.05), prematuridad (OR: 2.1; p>0.05) y muerte neonatal (OR: ND; p>0.05). Conclusiones: El oligohidramnios no es un factor asociado a Apgar bajo al nacer, bajo peso al nacer, prematuridad ni muerte neonatal.Determine if oligohydramnios is an associated factor related to perinatal complications at Victor Lazarte Echegaray’s Hospital. Methods: Was conduced an analitic, observational, retrospective, cohort study. The study population included 60 pregnant women determined by inclusion and exclusion criteries and distributed in 2 groups: with or without oligohydramnios. Results: The estadistical analysis about the variables in study like risk factors were: low Apgar at birth (OR: 2.1; p>0.05), low weight at birth (OR: 1 p>0.05), prematurity (OR: 2.1; p>0.05) and neonatal death (OR: ND; p>0.05). Conclusions: Oligohydramnios is not an associated factor related to low Apgar at birth , low weight at birth, prematurity and neonatal death

Vida profesional del veterinario D. José Godia Ribes

Hijo de agricultores-apicultores y nacido en Alcarrás (Lleida) en 1927. Pasó su infancia entre la República y la Guerra civil 1936-39, y su adolescencia en una postguerra llena de dificultades económicas. En las familias catalanas, el hijo mayor heredaba las propiedades y cuidaba a los padres, y los demás, según sus cualidades, escogían una profesión. En el caso de José Godia que era el segundo,por tener una gran vocación para el estudio, tuvo presiones para estudiar en el Seminario, incluso Medicina, pero se decidió por Veterinaria por su afición a los animales y a la apicultura. Dificultares económicas y la muerte de su padre, retrasaron sus estudios de Bachillerato, que hizo en el Instituto de Enseñanaza Media de Lleida, pero gracias a su tesón, adelantó 2 años y en 1950 aprobó el Examen de Estado de Barcelona
