    This work presents a novel approach to robotic bipedal walking. Based on the bipedal spring-mass model, which is known to closely describe human-like walking behavior, a robot has been designed that approaches the ideal model as closely as possible. The compliance of the springs is controllable by means of variable stiffness actuators. The controllable stiffness allows the gait to be stabilized against external disturbances

    Type I superconductivity in the Dirac semimetal PdTe2

    The superconductor PdTe2_2 was recently classified as a Type II Dirac semimetal, and advocated to be an improved platform for topological superconductivity. Here we report magnetic and transport measurements conducted to determine the nature of the superconducting phase. Surprisingly, we find that PdTe2_2 is a Type I superconductor with Tc=1.64T_c = 1.64 K and a critical field μ0Hc(0)=13.6\mu_0 H_c (0) = 13.6 mT. Our crystals also exhibit the intermediate state as demonstrated by the differential paramagnetic effect. For H>HcH > H_c we observe superconductivity of the surface sheath. This calls for a close examination of superconductivity in PdTe2_2 in view of the presence of topological surface states.Comment: 5 page

    Synthesis and viscosity behavior of poly(γ-p-biphenylmethyl-L-glutamate) in benzene/dichloroacetic acid mixtures, a comparison with poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate)

    The synthesis of poly(γ-p-biphenylmethyl-L-glutamate), PBPLG, (poly{L-imino-1-[2-(4-biphenylylmethoxycarbonyl)ethyl]-2-oxoethylene}), (1d) is described. The viscosity behavior of this polymer in benzene/dichloroacetic acid mixtures (c=0,2.10 -3 - 1,4.10 -3 g/cm3) at 25°CC is investigated. The results are compared with measurements on poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate), PBLG, (poly[L-imino-1-(2-benzyloxycarbonylethyl)-2-oxoethylene]), (1c) under the same conditions. A transition from a rigid hydrogen bonded helix to a random solvated coil occurs in two stages for both: PBPLG (first stage 0-55%, second stage 55-100% dichloroacetic acid) and PBLG (first stage 0-70%, second stage 70-100% dichloroacetic acid). \ud Therefore, the introduction of a p-phenyl substituent in PBLG leads to a less stable helix in benzene/dichloroacetic acid mixtures. \ud The stability and viscosity behavior of PBLG in benzene/dichloroacetic acid mixtures (c=0,2.10 - 3 - 1,4.10 - 3g/cm3) is quite similar to the behavior of PBLG in m-cresol/dichloroacetic acid mixtures (c=1,0.10 - 3 - 4,0.10 - 3 g/cm3)

    Framework for state and unknown input estimation of linear time-varying systems

    The design of unknown-input decoupled observers and filters requires the assumption of an existence condition in the literature. This paper addresses an unknown input filtering problem where the existence condition is not satisfied. Instead of designing a traditional unknown input decoupled filter, a Double-Model Adaptive Estimation approach is extended to solve the unknown input filtering problem. It is proved that the state and the unknown inputs can be estimated and decoupled using the extended Double-Model Adaptive Estimation approach without satisfying the existence condition. Numerical examples are presented in which the performance of the proposed approach is compared to methods from literature.Comment: This paper has been accepted by Automatica.     Optimal greenhouse design should take into account optimal climate management

    The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that optimal greenhouse design must account for (and be combined to) optimal climate management. We prove this by showing that different strategies and set-points to control the greenhouse ventilators result in different ¿optimal sets¿ of design parameters. We determined these optimal sets for a passive greenhouse in Almería, Spain where tomatoes were grown. The greenhouse design parameters investigated in this research were: 1) the transmission of the cover for photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), 2) the transmission of near infrared (NIR) radiation and 3) the emission coefficient for longwave radiation of the cover. Six optimal sets of design parameters were determined by maximising the marginal revenues (crop yield minus costs of design parameters), under given climate conditions, and for different ventilation control strategies. Each ventilation control strategy had different set-points for the air temperature and carbon dioxide concen¬tration to control the greenhouse ventilators. To solve this optimization problem we used a dynamic crop-greenhouse model and an optimization algorithm. The model described the combined influence of the relevant design parameters, outdoor climate and ventilation control upon economic crop yield, through their effect on indoor climate. The yearly costs of the design parameters were empirically derived from prices, physical properties and lifespan of a number of greenhouse cover materials. Results showed that indeed for different strategies and set-points to control the green¬house ventilators different ¿optimal sets¿ of design parameters and marginal revenues were obtained. For example, the difference between the highest optimal NIR trans¬mission 1.00 and the lowest optimal NIR transmission 0.40 was 60%, while the highest marginal revenues 16.94 ¿m-2 differed 18,7% with the lowest marginal revenues of 13.77 ¿ m-2. Additionally, it was found that the cover design parameters were time dependent. In conclusion, only a combined optimal control and design approach that takes into account the best climate control strategy and the time dependency of the design parameters will ensure optimal design parameters and maximum marginal revenues

    High-pressure study of the non-Fermi liquid material U_2Pt_2In

    The effect of hydrostatic pressure (p<= 1.8 GPa) on the non-Fermi liquid state of U_2Pt_2In is investigated by electrical resistivity measurements in the temperature interval 0.3-300 K. The experiments were carried out on single-crystals with the current along (I||c) and perpendicular (I||a) to the tetragonal axis. The pressure effect is strongly current-direction dependent. For I||a we observe a rapid recovery of the Fermi-liquid T^2-term with pressure. The low-temperature resistivity can be analysed satisfactorily within the magnetotransport theory of Rosch, which provides strong evidence for the location of U_2Pt_2In at an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. For I||c the resistivity increases under pressure, indicating the enhancement of an additional scattering mechanism. In addition, we have measured the pressure dependence of the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (T_N= 37.6 K) of the related compound U_2Pd_2In.     Muon spin rotation study of the topological superconductor SrxBi2Se3

    We report transverse-field (TF) muon spin rotation experiments on single crystals of the topological superconductor Srx_xBi2_2Se3_3 with nominal concentrations x=0.15x=0.15 and 0.180.18 (Tc3T_c \sim 3 K). The TF spectra (B=10B= 10 mT), measured after cooling to below TcT_c in field, did not show any additional damping of the muon precession signal due to the flux line lattice within the experimental uncertainty. This puts a lower bound on the magnetic penetration depth λ2.3 μ\lambda \geq 2.3 ~\mum. However, when we induce disorder in the vortex lattice by changing the magnetic field below TcT_c a sizeable damping rate is obtained for T0T \rightarrow 0. The data provide microscopic evidence for a superconducting volume fraction of 70 %\sim 70~ \% in the x=0.18x=0.18 crystal and thus bulk superconductivity.Comment: 6 pages, includes 4 figure
