    Attachment Style and Empathy in Late children, Adolescents, and Adults: Meta-analytic Review

    Attachment has a fundamental role in the development of empathy, which helps people interact with others and prevents aggressive behaviors. It is believed that having a secure attachment can promote empathy. However, there is no clear evidence about the relationship between insecure attachment styles and empathy. Therefore, a meta-analysis was performed to clarify the relation between different types of attachment and empathy from late children to adults (9-47 years). It was conducted using 14 studies (11542 participants) for the secure attachment, 7 studies (3115 participants) for the avoidant, and 8 studies (3479 participants) for the anxious-ambivalent. Results indicated that secure attachment was positively correlated with empathy, avoidant attachment was negatively correlated, and anxious-ambivalent attachment had an inconclusive relationship. Whereas the results obtained for the secure and avoidant attachment with empathy are consistent with literature, the inconsistencies in anxious-ambivalent style may be due to a duality of feelings experienced by these individuals, who go from high levels of empathy (to be accepted) to low levels of empathy (to avoid distressing emotions). We suggest broadening the limit in age, include the multidirectional nature of empathy, as well as the effect of gender and different sorts of affiliations (parents, couples) for future studies.El apego tiene un papel fundamental en el desarrollo de la empatía, la cual ayuda a las personas a interactuar y previene conductas agresivas. Aunque se cree que tener un apego seguro puede promover la empatía, no existe evidencia clara sobre la relación entre los apegos inseguros y la empatía. Consecuentemente, se realizó un metaanálisis para aclarar la relación entre los diferentes tipos de apego y la empatía desde infantes tardíos hasta adultos (9-47 años). Se incluyeron 14 estudios (11542 participantes) para el apego seguro, 7 estudios (3115 participantes) para el evitativo y 8 estudios (3479 participantes) para el ansioso-ambivalente. Los resultados indicaron que el apego seguro se correlacionó positivamente con la empatía, el apego evitativo se correlacionó negativamente y el apego ansioso-ambivalente tuvo una relación no concluyente. Mientras que los resultados obtenidos para el apego seguro y evitativo con empatía concuerdan con la literatura, las inconsistencias en el ansioso-ambivalente pueden deberse a una dualidad de sentimientos experimentados por estos individuos, experimentando desde altos niveles de empatía (buscando aceptación) a bajos niveles de empatía (evitando emociones estresantes).     Electrochemical method for Ag-PEG nanoparticles synthesis

    In this work we present an electrochemical method to successfully prepare silver nanoparticles using only polyethylene glycol as stabilizer and without any other reactive. Here we study the use of the polymeric stabilizer to allow the introduction of a potential tool to reinforce the control of the size and shape of the nanoparticles throughout the synthesis process. The evolution of the reactions was followed by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The electrode processes were characterized by cyclic voltammetric measurements and the final product was studied by Atomic Force Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, and X-Ray Diffraction.     Coupling radio propagation and weather forecast models to maximize Ka-band channel transmission rate for interplanetary missions

    Deep space (DS) missions for interplanetary explorations are aimed at acquiring information about the solar system and its composition. To achieve this result a radio link is established between the space satellite and receiving stations on the Earth. Significant channel capacity must be guaranteed to such spacecraft-to-Earth link considering their large separation distance as well. Terrestrial atmospheric impairments on the space-to-Earth propagating signals are the major responsible for the signal degradation thus reducing the link’s channel temporal availability. Considering the saturation and the limited bandwidth of the conventional systems used working at X-band (around 8.4 GHz), frequencies above Ku-band (12-18 GHz) are being used and currently explored for next future DS missions. For example, the ESA mission EUCLID, planned to be launched in 2020 to reach Sun-Earth Lagrange point L2, will use the K-band (at 25.5-27 GHz). The BepiColombo (BC) ESA mission to Mercury, planned to be launched in 2016, will use Ka-band (at 32-34 GHz) with some modules operating at X-band too. The W-band is also being investigated for space communications (Lucente et al., IEEE Systems J., 2008) as well as near-infrared band for DS links (Luini at al., 3rd IWOW, 2014; Cesarone et al., ICSOS, 2011). If compared with X-band channels, K-band and Ka-band can provide an appealing data rate and signal-to-noise ratio in free space due to the squared-frequency law increase of antenna directivity within the downlink budget (for the same physical antenna size). However, atmospheric path attenuation can be significant for higher frequencies since the major source of transmission outage is not only caused by convective rainfall, as it happens for lower frequencies too, but even non-precipitating clouds and moderate precipitation produced by stratiform rain events are detrimental. This means that accurate channel models are necessary for DS mission data link design at K and Ka band. A physical approach can offer advanced radiopropagation models to take into account the effects due to atmospheric gases, clouds and precipitation. The objective of this work is to couple a weather forecast numerical model with a microphysically- oriented radiopropagation model, providing a description of the atmospheric state and of its effects on a DS downlink. This work is developed in the framework of the RadioMeteorological Operations Planner (RMOP) program, aimed at performing a feasibility study for the BC mission (Biscarini et al., EuCAP 2014). The RMOP chain for the link budget computation is composed by three modules: weather forecast (WFM), radio propagation (RPM) and downlink budget (DBM). WFM is aimed at providing an atmospheric state vector. Among the available weather forecast models, for RMOP purposes we have used the Mesoscale Model 5. The output of the WFM is the input of the RPM for the computation of the atmospheric attenuation and sky-noise temperature at the receiving ground station antenna. RPM makes use of radiative transfer solver based on the Eddington approximations well as accurate scattering models. Time series of attenuation and sky-noise temperature coming from the RPM are converted into probability density functions and then ingested by the DBM to compute the received data volume (DV). Using the BC mission as a reference test case for the Ka-band ground station at Cebreros (Spain), this work will show the advantages of using a coupled WFM-RPM approach with respect to climatological statistics in a link budget optimization procedure. The signal degradation due to atmospheric effects in DS links in terms of received DV will be also investigated not only at Ka band, but also at X, K and W for intercomparison. The quality of the DS downlink will be given in terms of received DV and the results at different frequencies compared showing the respective advantages and drawbacks

    Micro-imaging VIS-IR spectroscopy of Martian meteorites in support of the future MaMIss spectrometer measurements

    In the view of the future ExoMars 2020 mission, an activity of VIS-IR spectral investigations on terrestrial and extraterrestrial Mars Analogues is ongoing, in support of the Ma Miss in situ measurements. Ma_Miss is an imaging spectrometer that works in the range 0.4-2.2 μm with 20nm spectral sampling and that will observe the lateral wall of the borehole generated by ExoMars Rover's drill (Coradini et al., 2001). In this abstract, we describe some results about the spectral properties and characterization of mineral grains of the slabs of two Martian meteorites by means of the SPIM imaging spectrometer. SPIM works in the 0.22-5.05 μm spectral range, with a spatial resolution of 38x38 μm on the sample and represents the spare of the spectrometer on Dawn spacecraft (De Angelis et al., 2015). The meteorites investigated are North West Africa 8657 (NWA8657) and Dar Al Gani 489 (DAG489), basaltic shergottites. The average spectrum of the NWA8657 slab, in comparison with spectral measurements on other martian meteorites (Mcfadden & Cline, 2005) shows low reflectance values and 1 and 2 μm spectral absorptions indicating the strong presence of Ca-pyroxenes. The successive pixel by pixel analyses for the pyroxenes spectral speciation showed a great variability of clinopyroxenes in NWA8657. In fact, the 2 μm absorption at longer wavelength in some pixel does not always correspond to the 1 μm feature at longer wavelength. The average spectrum of DAG 489 is marked by a signature typical of low-Ca pyroxenes. Pixel by pixel analyses of DAG489 shows a more homogeneous composition of the pyroxenes characterized by the two major features centered at 0.98-0.99 and 1.98-2 μm. Further spectral absorptions related to sulfates, phosphates and carbonates were detected that are being validated by SEM-BSD to constrain the formation hystories of these two shergottites

    Severe and prolonged myelosuppression during concomitant temozolomide and radiotherapy treatment in a patient with glioblastoma multiforme

    Aims: We describe the case of a patient with glioblastoma (GBM) who developed severe and prolonged myelosuppression during concomitant daily temozolomide (TMZ) and radiotherapy (RT) treatment. Analysis of polymorphisms in genes correlated with TMZ-induced myelotoxicity was also performed. Presentation of the Case: A 67–year-old man with diagnosis of GBM undergoing concomitant RT-TMZ treatment developed severe and prolonged pancytopenia that led to discontinuation of TMZ and required frequent platelet and red cells transfusions. Analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes NAD(P)H dehydrogenase, quinone 1 (NQO1) and glutathione S-transferase pi 1 (GSTP1) was carried out. Both SNPs were found to be wild-type. Discussion: TMZ is an oral alkylating agent used for the treatment of glioblastoma. TMZ is usually considered well tolerated and safe, with nausea and mild myelosuppression being the most common side effects. However, severe haematologic adverse events have been also reported. Recently, there has been growing interest in gene polymorphisms that might be associated with an increased risk of hematologic toxicity. Conclusion: Myelosuppression is a side effect that can occur relatively early during concomitant TMZ treatment and can negatively impact on patient’s quality of life. Further studies are warranted to find out a correlation between genetic factors and the occurrence of severe hematologic toxicity

    Functional Modulation by Lactate of Myoglobin A MONOMERIC ALLOSTERIC HEMOPROTEIN

    The effect of lactate on O2 binding properties of sperm whale and horse heart myoglobins (Mb) has been investigated at moderately acid pH (i.e. pH 6.5, a condition which may be achieved in vivo under a physical effort). Addition of lactate brings about a decrease of O2 affinity (i.e. an increase of P50) in sperm whale and horse heart myoglobins. Accordingly, lactate shows a different affinity for the deoxygenated and oxygenated form, behaving as a heterotropic modulator. The lactate effect on O2 affinity appears to differ for sperm whale and horse heart Mb, δlogP50 being ≈1.0 and ≈0.4, respectively. From the kinetic viewpoint, the variation of O2 affinity for both myoglobins can be attributed mainly to a decrease of the kinetic association rate constant for ligand binding

    Spin Temperatures of Ammonia and Water Molecules in Comets

    The nuclear spin temperature, which is derived from the ortho-to-para abundance ratio of molecules measured in cometary comae, is a clue to the formation conditions of cometary materials, especially the physical temperature at which the molecules were formed. In this paper we present new results for the nuclear spin temperatures of ammonia in comets Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) and 153P/Ikeya-Zhang based on observations of NH2 at 26 and 32 K, respectively. These results are similar to previous measurements in two other comets, and the nuclear spin temperatures of ammonia in the four comets are concentrated at about 30 K. We emphasize that the nuclear spin temperatures of water measured thus far have also been about 30 K. In particular, the spin temperatures of ammonia and water are equal to each other within ±1 σ error bars in the case of comet Hale-Bopp. These nuclear spin temperatures of ammonia and water were measured under quite different conditions (heliocentric distances and gas production rates). There is no clear trend between the nuclear spin temperatures and the heliocentric distances, the gas production rates, or the orbital periods of the comets. The possibilities of the ortho-to-para conversion in the coma and in the nucleus are discussed. The present data set implies that the ortho-to-para ratios were not altered after the molecules were incorporated into the cometary nuclei. It appears that cometary ammonia and water molecules formed on cold grains at about 30 K

    Long-term results in patients with T2-3 N0 distal rectal cancer undergoing radiotherapy before transanal endoscopic microsurgery

    BACKGROUND: Local excision after radiotherapy for node-negative low rectal cancer may be an alternative to radical excision. This study evaluated the results of local excision in patients with small (less than 3 cm in diameter) T2 and T3 distal rectal tumours following neoadjuvant therapy. METHODS: One hundred patients with rectal cancer (54 uT2 and 46 uT3 uN0 tumours) were enrolled. All patients underwent preoperative radiotherapy followed by local excision by means of transanal endoscopic microsurgery. RESULTS: Definitive histological examination revealed nine pT1, 54 pT2 and 19 pT3 tumours. A complete response (R0) or microscopic residual tumour (R1mic) was found in three and 15 patients respectively. Minor complications occurred in 11 patients and major complications in two. At a median follow-up of 55 (range 7-120) months, the local failure rate was 5 per cent and metastatic disease was found in two patients. The cancer-specific survival rate at 90 months' follow-up was 89 per cent, and the overall survival rate 72 per cent. Salvage abdominoperineal resection was performed in three patients, two of whom were disease free at 15 and 19 months. CONCLUSION: Treatment of small uT2 and uT3 uN0 rectal cancers with preoperative high-dose radiotherapy followed by transanal endoscopic microsurgery is an acceptable alternative to conventional radical resection
