Effects of thickness on the spin susceptibility of the 2D electron gas
Using available quantum Monte Carlo predictions for a strictly 2D electron
gas, we have estimated the spin susceptibility of electrons in actual devices
taking into account the effect of the finite transverse thickness and finding a
very good agreement with experiments. A weak disorder, as found in very clean
devices and/or at densities not too low, just brings about a minor enhancement
of the susceptibility.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Spin Susceptibility of Interacting Two-dimensional Electrons with Anisotropic Effective Mass
We report measurements of the spin susceptibility in dilute (rs up to 10)
AlAs two-dimensional (2D) electrons occupying a single conduction-band valley
with an anisotropic in-plane Fermi contour, characterized by longitudinal and
transverse effective masses, ml and mt. As the density is decreased, the spin
susceptibility is significantly enhanced over its band value, reflecting the
role of interaction. Yet the enhancement is suppressed compared to the results
of quantum Monte Carlo based calculations that take the finite thickness of the
electron layer into account but assume an isotropic effective mass equal to
sqrt(ml.mt). Proper treatment of an interacting 2D system with an anisotropic
effective mass therefore remains a theoretical challenge.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Vagus nerve stimulation: A new approach to reduce heart failure
Autonomic imbalance with increased adrenergic and reduced parasympathetic activity is
involved in the development and progress of heart failure (HF). Experimental data have
demonstrated that stimulation of the vagus nerve is able to reverse ventricular remodeling of
the failing heart. There is also evidence that increasing parasympathetic activity may stimulate
the production of nitric oxide, and reduce the devastating inflammatory process involved in
HF. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been successfully applied for many years to treat drug
resistant epilepsy. The first study of right vagus stimulation in patients with advance HF has
proven the feasibility and safety of this new approach. Long term follow-up of increased vagal
tone over 12 months with a specially designed stimulating system (CardioFit, BioControl,
Yehud, Israel) has demonstrated that symptoms of HF can be significantly diminished, left
ventricular ejection fraction increased, and ventricular volumes reduced. These recently published
data are very promising and may offer another approach for patients with advanced HF
already treated with optimal medical therapy. A prospective randomized trial with a larger
patient cohort is needed to confirm these beneficial results of VNS. (Cardiol J 2010; 17, 6: 638-643
Eurocode-based seismic assessment of modern heritage RC structures:The case of the Tower of the Nations in Naples (Italy)
Given the interest earned recently by modern heritage structures, seismic assessment criteria of Eurocode 8 for ordinary reinforced concrete structures are applied to a modern heritage RC building. This case study, the Tower of the Nations in Naples, was designed at the end of 1930s. Modal dynamic identification, in situ inspections and testing provided the necessary knowledge of the structure in terms of geometry, structural details, and material properties. Two nonlinear models of the structure are built up in both the hypotheses of accounting and not accounting for tuff infills’ stiffness and strength contribution. Lumped plasticity model for reinforced concrete elements and equivalent strut macro-models for tuff and concrete infills are employed. Seismic assessment through nonlinear dynamic analyses is carried out for both limit states of Significant Damage and Damage Limitation. Assessment of bare and infilled models emphasizes a lower demand in terms of maximum interstorey drift of the infilled model with respect to the bare model, for both limit states considered. Record-to-record variability for the sets of seven records becomes larger if infills strength and stiffness contribution is taken into account. Outcome of the assessment is not affected by infills, i.e. the structure can be considered safe (according to EC8 provisions) for both limit states, and in both modeling hypotheses. On the other hand, the ratio demand over capacity, for both the limit states considered, is strictly influenced by infills’ contribution. Assessment tools provided for ordinary RC structures can be addressed to modern heritage buildings as shown in this case study, even if specific care is necessary for nonlinear structural modeling in case of non-conventional structural elements and non-conventional structural materials (e.g., tuff infills in lieu of clay hollow brick infills)
Correlation Energy and the Spin Susceptibility of the Two-Valley Two-dimensional Electron Gas
We find that the spin susceptibility of a two-dimensional electron system
with valley degeneracy does not grow critically at low densities, at variance
with experimental results [A. Shashkin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 036403
(2006)]. We ascribe this apparent discrepancy to the weak disorder present in
experimental samples. Our prediction is obtained from accurate correlation
energies computed with state of-the-art diffusion Monte Carlo simulations and
fitted with an analytical expression which also provides a local spin density
functional for the system under investigation.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Abstract In the automotive field, size optimization procedures can be combined with concept modelling approaches, in order to design a vehicle Body-In-White (BIW) model with optimal static and dynamic performances already in the early design stages. However, this specific optimization problem, with hundreds of design variables, limited design space and often conflicting objectives, makes the choice of the appropriate optimization method really difficult. The aim of this paper is to show an industrial case study, where two different implementations of the classical gradient-based (GB) method are used in combination with a technique for vehicle body concept modelling to achieve a multi-objective BIW optimization of a passenger car
