Scalar self-interaction in the spacetime of a cosmic dispiration

In the present paper we investigate the classical self-interaction associated with a charged scalar point particle placed at rest in the gravitational field of a linear topological defect known in literature as cosmic dispiration, a combination of a cosmic string with a screw dislocation. We found exact expressions for the Green's function and, consequently, for the self-energy by considering both massive and massless scalar point particles. We present numerical graphs and analyze the nature of the self-interactions in the cosmic dispiration spacetime itself and in the cases of pure screw dislocation and cosmic string spacetimes.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

Correlations and selection of parents to technological traits of upland cotton.

Technological traits improvement of cotton fiber is a constant demand by textile industry. This research aimed to identify the potential of improved materials with high lint percentage to contribute with alleles that increase the lint percentage in Extra long staple fiber (ELS) upland cotton. Two contrasting materials for lint percentage (LP) and fiber length (FL) were used, one with long fiber and a low lint percentage (parent A) and another with high lint percentage and medium length (parent B). The following variables were evaluated: lint percentage (LP), upper half mean length (UHML), fiber uniformity (FU), fiber strength (FS), and elongation (EL). Diallel analysis was performed using the Griffing?s Method 4 adapted to partial diallel. Additive effects were predominant over non-additive effects. The mean LP was higher when using parent B. The opposite occurred for UHML. A negative correlation was detected between LP and UHML, showing the difficulty of obtaining genetic gain for both traits at the same time.Título em português: Correlações e seleção de genitores para caracteres tecnológicos em algodoeiro herbáceo

Dynamics of spin correlations in the spin-1/2 isotropic XY chain in a transverse field

Dynamic xx spin pair correlation functions for the isotropic spin-1/2 XY chain are calculated numerically for long open chains in the presence of a transverse magnetic field at finite temperature. As an application we discuss the temperature dependence of the spin-spin relaxation time in PrCl_3.Comment: 2 pages, latex, 2 figures, abstract of the paper presented at Ampere Summer School ``Applications of Magnetic Resonance in Novel Materials'' Nafplion, Greece, 3-9 September, 2000, partially published in J. Magnetic susceptibility studies of the spin-glass and Verwey transitions in magnetite nanoparticles

Magnetite nanostructured powder samples were synthesized by aging chemical method. Phase, structural, and magnetic properties were characterized. X-ray diffraction patterns showed cubic magnetite pure phase, with average crystallite size, , equal to 40 nm. Susceptibility measurements showed the well-known Verwey transition at a temperature of 90 K. The decrease of Verwey transition temperature, with respect to the one reported in literature (125 K) was attributed to the low average crystallite size. Moreover, the spin-glass like transition was observed at 35 K. Activation energy calculated from susceptibility curves, with values ranging from 6.26 to 6.93 meV, showed a dependence of spin-glass transition on frequency. Finally, hysteresis loops showed that there is not an effect of Verwey transition on magnetic properties. On the other hand, a large increase of coercivity and remanent magnetization at a temperature between 5 and 50 K confirmed the presence of a magnetic transition at low temperatures
