    Assessment of Chemical Inhibitor Addition to Improve the Gas Production from Biowaste

    The coexistence of sulphate-reducing bacteria and methanogenic archaea in the reactors during the anaerobic digestion from sulphate-containing waste could favor the accumulation of sulfide on the biogas, and therefore reduce its quality. In this study, the effect of sulphate-reducing bacteria inhibitor (MoO−2 4 ) addition in a two phase system from sulphate-containing municipal solid waste to improve the quality of the biogas has been investigated. The results showed that although SRB and sulphide production decreased, the use of inhibitor was not effective to improve the anaerobic digestion in a two phase system from sulphate-containing waste, since a significant decrease on biogas and organic matter removal were observed. Before MoO−2 4 addition the average values of volatile solid were around 12 g/kg, after 5 days of inhibitor use, those values did exceed to 28 g/kg. Molybdate caused acidification in the reactor and it was according to decrease in the pH values. In relation to microbial consortia, the effect of inhibitor was a decrease in Bacteria (44%; 60% in sulphate-reducing bacteria) and Archaea (38%) population

    Illusory vowels in Spanish-English sequential bilinguals: Evidence that accurate L2 perception is neither necessary nor sufficient for accurate L2 production

    Spanish native speakers are known to pronounce onset /sC/ clusters in English with a prothetic vowel, as in esport for sport, due to their native language phonotactic constraints. We assessed whether accurate production of e.g. spi instead of espi was related to accurate perceptual discrimination of this contrast in second language (L2) speech of Spanish–English sequential bilinguals. A same–different discrimination task in stimulus pairs such as spi–espi assessed speech perception and a phonemic verbal fluency task elicited speech production. Logistic mixed model regressions revealed significant differences in accuracy between the bilinguals and the English monolinguals, although some bilinguals performed within the monolingual range. For the production task, but not for the perception task, bilinguals with more exposure to English and greater grammatical knowledge of English performed significantly more accurately than those with less exposure and lower grammatical knowledge. There was no significant correlation between production accuracy and perception accuracy. Through examining phonotactic constraints, these results expand a growing body of research into single sounds which suggests dissociations between L2 perception and production. In contrast to predictions made by L2 speech models, the findings indicate that accurate L2 perception is neither necessary nor sufficient for accurate L2 production, and instead are interpreted to indicate that the two capacities recruit different executive control mechanisms and are acquired – at least to a certain extent – independently in L2 acquisition.Peer Reviewe

    The Bank of Standardized Stimuli (BOSS), a New Set of 480 Normative Photos of Objects to Be Used as Visual Stimuli in Cognitive Research

    There are currently stimuli with published norms available to study several psychological aspects of language and visual cognitions. Norms represent valuable information that can be used as experimental variables or systematically controlled to limit their potential influence on another experimental manipulation. The present work proposes 480 photo stimuli that have been normalized for name, category, familiarity, visual complexity, object agreement, viewpoint agreement, and manipulability. Stimuli are also available in grayscale, blurred, scrambled, and line-drawn version. This set of objects, the Bank Of Standardized Stimuli (BOSS), was created specifically to meet the needs of scientists in cognition, vision and psycholinguistics who work with photo stimuli

    Phase behavior of hard colloidal platelets using free energy calculations

    We investigate the phase behavior of a model for colloidal hard platelets and rigid discotic molecules: oblate hard spherocylinders (OHSC). We perform free energy calculations using Monte Carlo simulations to map out the phase diagram as a function of the aspect ratio L/D of the particles. The phase diagram displays a stable isotropic phase, a nematic liquid crystal phase for L/D ≤ 0.12, a columnar phase for L/D 0.3, a tilted crystal phase for L 0.45, and an aligned crystal phase for L/D 0.45. We compare the results to the known phase diagram of hard cut spheres. Thin cut spheres are almost cylinder-shaped, while the interactions between real discotic mesogens and colloidal platelets are more consistent with the toroidal rims of the OHSC. Since the shapes of the OHSC and the cut spheres are otherwise similar, the phase diagrams of the two types of particles are quite akin. However, the tilted crystal phase for OHSC, which is of a crystal type that is frequently found in experiments on disklike molecules, has not been found for hard cut spheres. Furthermore, although we have found a cubatic phase, it was shown to be definitely unstable, whereas the stability of the cubatic phase of cut spheres is still disputed. Finally, we also show that the phase boundaries differ significantly from those for cut spheres. These are remarkable consequences of a subtle change in particle shape, which show that for a detailed comparison with the phase behavior of experimental particles, the OHSC should be used as a model particle
