Generally Covariant Actions for Multiple D-branes
We develop a formalism that allows us to write actions for multiple D-branes
with manifest general covariance. While the matrix coordinates of the D-branes
have a complicated transformation law under coordinate transformations, we find
that these may be promoted to (redundant) matrix fields on the transverse space
with a simple covariant transformation law. Using these fields, we define a
covariant distribution function (a matrix generalization of the delta function
which describes the location of a single brane). The final actions take the
form of an integral over the curved space of a scalar single-trace action built
from the covariant matrix fields, tensors involving the metric, and the
covariant distribution function. For diagonal matrices, the integral localizes
to the positions of the individual branes, giving N copies of the single-brane

Studies on Wild House Mice. VII. Prenatal Maternal Environment and Aggression
The effect of the maternal environment on intermale aggression was studied by means of embryo transfer of genetically selected aggressive (SAL) and nonaggressive wild house mice (LAL), and their reciprocal F1's, to standard (NMRI) females. No effect was found on the attack latency scores (ALS), i.e., aggression: all genotypes born and raised under natural conditions showed an ALS similar that of genotypes born and raised by NMRI females. Since previous studies on wild house mice failed to demonstrate postnatal effects on aggression, and the present results indicate the absence of prenatal maternal environmental effects on aggression, the primacy of genetic over maternal variance in the development of adult intermale aggression in wild house mice is indicated
Genome sequence and analysis of the tuber crop potato
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is the world’s most important non-grain food crop and is central to global food security. It is clonally propagated, highly heterozygous, autotetraploid, and suffers acute inbreeding depression. Here we use a homozygous doubled-monoploid potato clone to sequence and assemble 86% of the 844-megabase genome. We predict 39,031 protein-coding genes and present evidence for at least two genome duplication events indicative of a palaeopolyploid origin. As the first genome sequence of an asterid, the potato genome reveals 2,642 genes specific to this large angiosperm clade. We also sequenced a heterozygous diploid clone and show that gene presence/absence variants and other potentially deleterious mutations occur frequently and are a likely cause of inbreeding depression. Gene family expansion, tissue-specific expression and recruitment of genes to new pathways contributed to the evolution of tuber development. Strings in extremal BTZ black holes
We study the spectrum of the worldsheet theory of the bosonic closed string
in the massless and extremal rotating BTZ black holes. We use a hyperbolic
Wakimoto representation of the SL(2,R) currents to construct vertex operators
for the string modes on these backgrounds. We argue that there are tachyons in
the twisted sector, but these are not localised near the horizon. We study the
relation to the null orbifold in the limit of vanishing cosmological constant.
We also discuss the problem of extending this analysis to the supersymmetric

Kappa-symmetry for coincident D-branes
A kappa-symmetric action for coincident D-branes is presented. It is valid in
the approximation that the additional fermionic variables, used to incorporate
the non-abelian degrees of freedom, are treated classically. The action is
written as a Bernstein-Leites integral on the supermanifold obtained from the
bosonic worldvolume by adjoining the extra fermions. The integrand is a very
simple extension of the usual Green-Schwarz action for a single brane; all
symmetries, except for kappa, are manifest, and the proof of kappa-symmetry is
