Prostate-Specific Antigen testing in men between 40 and 70 years in Brazil: database from a check-up program

Objectives To evaluate the PSA in a large population of Brazilian men undergone to check up, and correlate the PSA cutoffs with prostate size and urinary symptoms. Materials and Methods This is a cross sectional study performed with men between 40 and 70 years undergone to check-up. All men were undergone to urological evaluation, digital rectal examination, prostate-specific antigen, and ultrasonography The exclusion criteria were men who used testosterone in the last six months, or who were using 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors. Results A total of 5015 men with an average age of 49.0 years completed the study. Most men were white and asymptomatic. The PSA in the three different aging groups were 0.9 ± 0.7ng/dL for men between 40 and 50; 1.2 ± 0.5ng/dL for men between 50 and 60; and 1.7 ± 1.5ng/dL for men greater than 60 years (p=0.001). A total of 192 men had PSA between 2.5 and 4ng/ml. From these men 130 were undergone to prostate biopsy. The predictive positive value of biopsy was 25% (32/130). In the same way, 100 patients had PSA >4ng/mL. From these men, 80 were undergone to prostate biopsy. In this group, the predictive positive value of biopsy was 40% (32/100). The Gleason score was 6 in 19 men (60%), 7 in 10 men (31%) and 8 in 3 men (9%). Conclusions The PSA level of Brazilian men undergone to check up was low. There was a positive correlation with aging, IPSS and prostate size.Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) Department of UrologyHospital Israelita Albert EinsteinWake Forest UniversityUNIFESP, Department of UrologySciEL

Fredholm methods for billiard eigenfunctions in the coherent state representation

We obtain a semiclassical expression for the projector onto eigenfunctions by means of the Fredholm theory. We express the projector in the coherent state basis, thus obtaining the semiclassical Husimi representation of the stadium eigenfunctions, which is written in terms of classical invariants: periodic points, their monodromy matrices and Maslov indices.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. Production of Handmade Paper from the Sugar Cane Bagasse Pulping

    Get PDF
Nowadays, Brazil is considered the leading country, worldwide, in the production of sugarcane. Therefore, it is also the largest producer of residual biomass: the sugarcane bagasse. This is produced in different activities, such as biofuel, beverage, and sugar production. As all conventional waste, if improperly disposed of it can impact the environment and therefore, it is necessary to use methods to recover this biomass so that it can be returned as a consumer good. Thus, this work aims to use sugarcane bagasse from pastry shops in Duque de Caxias, RJ, to produce paper using homemade techniques. In this sense, the pulping method was performed by cooking the fibers in a pressure cooker in alkaline medium, washing and drying. Subsequently, the fibers obtained were molded on an A4 screen. Two sheets and three replicas were produced. The results obtained showed that the paper production was efficient and the physical measurements, grammage, area, mass, thickness, height and width, calculated by ANOVA and Tukey's Method showed equal values in each case, which indicates the quality of the production. In addition, the physical characteristics classified them as Kraft type paper, which can be used in craft activities

Phase Space Structure of Generalized Gaussian Cat States

We analyze generalized Gaussian cat states obtained by superposing arbitrary Gaussian states, e.g., a coherent state and a squeezed state. The Wigner functions of such states exhibit the typical pair of Gaussian hills plus an interference term which presents a novel structure, as compared with the standard superposition of coherent states (degenerate case). We prove that, in any dimensions, the structure of the interference term is characterized by a particular quadratic form; in one degree of freedom the phase is hyperbolic. This phase-space structure survives the action of a thermal reservoir. We also discuss certain superpositions of {\em mixed} Gaussian states generated by conditional Gaussian operations or Kerr-type dynamics on thermal states.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Physical Review
