The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of crop cover, using Brachiaria ruziziensis mulch, Trichoderma harzianum 1306 spray treatment and of the interaction between these methods in reducing the density of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum inocula, in white mold incidence and in soybean yield. The evaluations were done from 2006 to 2008 in Jataí (Goiás State, Brazil), in a commercial crop with an average of 136.08 sclerotia m-2. In March and October 2006, 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 L ha-1 of T. harzianum 1306 (2x109 viable spores mL-1) were sprayed on plots cropped with B. ruziziensis or not. After controlling brachiaria with glyphosate (2,5 L ha-1) and sowing soybean 'M-Soy 6101' onto 10.1 Mg ha-1 of its straw, 98% less apothecia were found in these treatments. The treatments with straw and 0.5 and 1 L ha-1 of T. harzianum presented 72.1 and 84.1% more parasited sclerotia respectively. 'M-Soy 6101' soybean yield in 2006/2007 was inversely proportional to the apothecia population per square meter, but 7.6% lower in the treatments with straw. In the 2007/2008 season, the disease incidence in 'M-Soy 7908' was lower in plots with straw and 0.5 and 1 L ha-1 of T. harzianum 1306, applied only in the previous year. Biocontrol with T. harzianum 1306 and the use of B. ruziziensis mulch are efficient and viable for white mold control in soybean in Brazilian Cerrado areas

    The correlation between physical and chemical attributes of fruits can serve as indicators for the ideal harvest time and function as selection criteria to enhance the management and productivity of crops. This study aimed to investigate the correlations among physical and chemical properties of Cortibel guava fruits grown in the Brazilian Cerrado. Parameters assessed included skin and pulp color, weight, diameter, length, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, and the ratio of these characteristics. Data were analyzed using Pearson's linear correlation with a significance level of P < 0.05. Several physical and chemical properties of the fruits exhibited significant correlations. The highest correlation coefficients were observed between weight and fruit diameter, as well as between hue angle of the skin and skin lightness. The properties of Cortibel guava fruits cultivated in the Brazilian Cerrado exhibit significant correlations. These findings enable the utilization of straightforward parameters in the selection processes of Cortibel guava for breeding objectives. Highlights: Guava is a significant crop with high economic value. The characterization of fruits assists in selecting genotypes with desirable commercial properties. Cortibel guava fruits exhibited significant correlations between some physical and chemical characteristics. The correlations between the physical and chemical characteristics of the fruits allow the selection of materials of interest for breeding.The correlation between physical and chemical attributes of fruits can serve as indicators for the ideal harvest time and function as selection criteria to enhance the management and productivity of crops. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a efetividade do sistema Santa Fé na redução do inóculo inicial de Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, agente causal do mofo-branco em soja. O experimento foi realizado em Jataí, GO, nas safras de 2007/2008, 2008/2009 e 2009/2010, em lavoura comercial infestada naturalmente pelo patógeno. Foram feitas avaliações quanto ao número de escleródios germinados na superfície do solo, e quanto ao número de apotécios e estipes do patógeno. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial (2x4), com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram do sistema Santa Fé (milho + Urochloa ruziziensis) e do milho solteiro implantados na safrinha, em março de 2008 e 2009. Além disso, estudaram-se também quatro diferentes épocas de avaliação da germinação dos escleródios e produção de apotécios e estipes. Verificou-se que o sistema Santa Fé aumentou a proporção de escleródios menores que 2 mm, considerados de menor infectividade, e favoreceu a redução do inóculo inicial por meio da germinação de escleródios e formação de apotécios na entressafra, o que reduziu o número de escleródios germinados e o número de apotécios em pleno florescimento durante os cultivos da soja. O sistema Santa Fé pode reduzir o inóculo inicial de S. sclerotiorum, e pode ser utilizado no manejo do mofo-branco da soja.The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of Santa Fé system on reduction of the initial inoculum of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, the causal agent of white mold in soybean. The experiment was carried out in Jataí, GO, Brazil, during 2007/2008, 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 growing seasons, in a commercial field naturally infested with the pathogen. Evaluations were done for number of sclerodia germinated on the soil surface, and for the pathogen number of apothecia and stipes. The experimental design was a randomized block, in a 2x4 factorial arrangement with four replicates. The treatments comprised the Santa Fé system use (maize + Urochloa ruziziensis), and maize as a single crop, both sown at the "safrinha" period (March 2008 and 2009). Furthermore, four evaluation dates of sclerotium germination and apothecium and stipe production were studied. The Santa Fé system increased the proportion of sclerotia smaller than 2 mm, considered as of lower infectivity, and promoted the reduction of the initial inoculum through the germination of sclerotia and the development of apothecia between the soybean growing seasons, what reduced the germinated sclerotia and the number of apothecia in the full flowering stage during soybean growing seasons. Santa Fé system can reduce the initial inoculum of S. sclerotiorum, and it may be used for the management of white mold in soybean

The objective of this study was to evaluate alterations in the soil organic carbon, biomass and microbial activity, urease and acid phosphatase activity, in two savannah soils, as affected by soil management systems. The study consisted of five soil management systems in a Typic Quartzipsamment, four in an Oxisol, and reference areas without alterations in the two soil types. The management systems changed the biochemical attributes of both soils. The Typic Quartzipsamment area under the soybean/<em>Brachiaria decumbens</em> sequence decreased the soil organic carbon and the microbial biomass carbon, and increased the respiration and <em>q</em>CO<sub>2</sub>, while the Oxisol, in all the areas, except for pasture, promoted reductions in the biochemical attributes. Among the management systems studied,  the pasture provided improvements in the evaluated attributes, in both soils.</span></span></p> <p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;" align="JUSTIFY"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">KEY-WORDS: Soil quality;
