Spin-orbit mode transfer via a classical analog of quantum teleportation

We translate the quantum teleportation protocol into a sequence of coherent operations involving three degrees of freedom of a classical laser beam. The protocol, which we demonstrate experimentally, transfers the polarisation state of the input beam to the transverse mode of the output beam. The role of quantum entanglement is played by a non-separable mode describing the path and transverse degrees of freedom. Our protocol illustrates the possibility of new optical applications based on this intriguing classical analogue of quantum entanglement.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure

Insuficiência renal aguda secundária à síndrome compartimental abdominal: relato de quatro casos e revisão da literatura

We report on 4 cases of abdominal compartment syndrome complicated by acute renal failure that were promptly reversed by different abdominal decompression methods. Case 1: A 57-year-old obese woman in the post-operative period after giant incisional hernia correction with an intra-abdominal pressure of 24 mm Hg. She was sedated and curarized, and the intra-abdominal pressure fell to 15 mm Hg. Case 2: A 73-year-old woman with acute inflammatory abdomen was undergoing exploratory laparotomy when a hypertensive pneumoperitoneum was noticed. During the surgery, enhancement of urinary output was observed. Case 3: An 18-year-old man who underwent hepatectomy and developed coagulopathy and hepatic bleeding that required abdominal packing, developed oliguria with a transvesical intra-abdominal pressure of 22 mm Hg. During reoperation, the compresses were removed with a prompt improvement in urinary flow. Case 4: A 46-year-old man with hepatic cirrhosis was admitted after incisional hernia repair with intra-abdominal pressure of 16 mm Hg. After paracentesis, the intra-abdominal pressure fell to 11 mm Hg.Descrevemos quatro casos de síndrome compartimental abdominal complicadas por insuficiência renal aguda e prontamente revertidas por diferentes métodos de descompressão abdominal. Caso 1: paciente obesa de 57 anos no pós-operatório de correção de hérnia incisional gigante com pressão intra-abdominal de 24 mm Hg. Após sedação e curarização, a PIA caiu para 15 mm Hg. Caso 2: paciente de 73 anos com abdômem agudo inflamatório submetida à laparotomia exploradora quando foi diagnosticado pneumoperitôneo hipertensivo. Durante a cirurgia houve melhora da diurese. Caso 3: paciente de 18 anos submetido a hepactetomia apresentou coagulopatia e sangramento hepático necessitando tamponamento com compressas, evoluindo com oligúria e PIA de 22 mm Hg. Na reoperação, após remoção das compressas houve melhora importante do fluxo urinário. Caso 4: paciente de 46 anos com cirrose hepática foi admitido após correção de hérnia incisional com pressão intra-abdominal de 16 mm Hg. Após paracentese, a pressão intra-abdominal caiu para 11 mm Hg

Astigmatic tomography of orbital angular momentum superpositions

We use astigmatic transformations to characterize two-dimensional superpositions of Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) states in laser beams. We propose two methods for doing this, both relying only on astigmatic transformations, viewed as rotations on the Poincar\'e sphere, followed by imaging. These methods can be used as a tomographic tool for communication protocols based on optical vortices.Comment: Submitted to Physical Rivew

Tese de doutoramento, Estudos de Literatura e de Cultura (Estudos Ingleses), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Letras, 2013O presente trabalho constitui-se como uma reflexão teórica e crítica sobre algumas das transformações registadas nas últimas décadas nas estruturas e na organização das sociedades modernas norte-europeias e norte-americanas, no âmbito da chamada ‘globalização’. O trabalho analisa em particular o surgimento e a expansão do turismo e das indústrias culturais, quer a nível substantivo quer epistemológico, no contexto da desindustrialização massiva e da substituição das indústrias da manufatura pelos setores dos serviços. O trabalho presta particular atenção à conversão de complexos industriais e mineiros em património, bem como à sua musealização e dinamização turística, centrando a sua análise no contexto português mas considerando-a à luz da experiência pioneira britânica. A requalificação, valorização e dinamização turística do património industrial e mineiro da Mina de São Domingos e a musealização da história e memória locais são tomadas como estudo de caso das transformações modernas previamente analisadas.This study is a critical and theoretical reflection about structural and organisational transformations that have taken place during the last few decades, within the context of the so-called “globalisation”, in modern North European and North American societies. In particular, it analyses, both substantively and epistemologically, the appearance and expansion of tourism and cultural industries in the wake of the large-scale deindustrialisation and substitution of manufacturing industries for the service sectors. The study examines the conversion of industrial and mining sites into heritage sites, along with their musealisation and touristic development, focusing on the Portuguese context against the backdrop of the innovative British experience. The regeneration, appreciation and touristic development of the industrial and mining heritage site of the São Domingos mine and the musealisation of the history and collective memory of the local community are considered as a case study of the modern transformations analysed previously

Optical Trapping in a Dark Focus

The superposition of a Gaussian mode and a Laguerre-Gauss mode with $\ell=0,p\neq0$ generates the so-called bottle beam: a dark focus surrounded by a bright region. In this paper, we theoretically explore the use of bottle beams as an optical trap for dielectric spheres with a refractive index smaller than that of their surrounding medium. The forces acting on a small particle are derived within the dipole approximation and used to simulate the Brownian motion of the particle in the trap. The intermediate regime of particle size is studied numerically and it is found that stable trapping of larger dielectric particles is also possible. Based on the results of the intermediate regime analysis, an experiment aimed at trapping living organisms in the dark focus of a bottle beam is proposed.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

Efeito de inoculantes micorrízicos na produção de mudas de banana.

A inoculação de plantas com fungos micorrízicos arbusculares vem sendo adotada como alternativa à dependência de fertilizantes fosfatados durante a fase de crescimento de mudas. Além disso, inoculantes micorrizados também tem sido associados a uma melhor condição de crescimento de explantes micropropagados durante a fase de aclimatação. O desafio é a natureza biotrófica obrigatória dos fungos micorrízicos arbusculares, os quais completam seu ciclo apenas em raízes de culturas vivas
