    Understanding the growth in outdoor recreation participation: an opportunity for sport development in the United Kingdom

It establishes a five-component model to help understand the growth in this sub-sector of the wider sport and physical activity industry. The paper is based on a narrative literature review of the importance of outdoor recreation and also sets the position of the sector in terms of sport policy in the UK. From determining the factors that are underpinning the growing importance of the sector the article goes on to establish implications for policy and practice in sport policy and development in the UK and beyond. It seeks to establish lesson learning between industry and academia that has underpinned the evolution of outdoor recreation policy development in recent years. Furthermore, it establishes future research agendas and directions for those working in outdoor recreation and physical activity spaces and places

    Comparison of Model Estimated and Measured Direct-Normal Solar Irradiance

    Direct-normal solar irradiance (DNSI), the total energy in the solar spectrum incident in unit time on a unit area at the earth's surface perpendicular to the direction to the Sun, depends only on atmospheric extinction of solar energy without regard to the details of the extinction - whether absorption or scattering. Here we report a set of closure experiments performed in north-central Oklahoma in April 1996, under cloud-free conditions, wherein measured atmospheric composition and aerosol optical thickness are input to a radiative transfer model, MODTRAN-3, to estimate DNSI, which is then compared with measured values obtained with normal incidence pyrheliometers and absolute cavity radiometers. Uncertainty in aerosol optical thickness (AOT) dominates the uncertainty in DNSI calculation.     t The effect of reuterin and high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) processing at 450 MPa for 5 min on the inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and the characteristics of coldsmoked salmon during 35 days at 4 and 10 °C were investigated. The growth rate of the pathogen was reduced by reuterin addition and a synergistic antimicrobial effect against L. monocytogenes was recorded when the biopreservative was applied in combination with HHP at 450 MPa for 5 min. This combined treatment prevented the pathogen recovery observed with individual treatments and delayed the spoilage of smoked salmon maintaining total viable counts under 3.5 log units during 35 days of storage at 4 °C. All treatments assayed induced changes in lightness (L*) and redness (a*), resulting in a brighter appearance of smoked salmon, whereas no modifications were recorded in shear strength values immediately after treatments. Moreover, reuterin and HHP treatments, individually or in combination, avoided the formation of biogenic amines during the 35 days of storage at 4 and 10 °C.     Stress tensor and focal mechanisms in the Dead Sea basin

    We use the recorded seismicity, confined to the Dead Sea basin and its boundaries, by the Dead Sea Integrated Research (DESIRE) portable seismic network and the Israel and Jordan permanent seismic networks for studying the mechanisms of earthquakes in the Dead Sea basin. The observed seismicity in the Dead Sea basin is divided into nine regions according to the spatial distribution of the earthquakes and the known tectonic features. The large number of recording stations and the adequate station distribution allowed the reliable determinations of 494 earthquake focal mechanisms. For each region, based on the inversion of the observed polarities of the earthquakes, we determine the focal mechanisms and the associated stress tensor. For 159 earthquakes, out of the 494 focal mechanisms, we could determine compatible fault planes. On the eastern side, the focal mechanisms are mainly strike-slip mechanism with nodal planes in the N-S and E-W directions. The azimuths of the stress axes are well constrained presenting minimal variability in the inversion of the data, which is in agreement with the Eastern Boundary fault on the east side of the Dead Sea basin and what we had expected from the regional geodynamics. However, larger variabilities of the azimuthal and dip angles are observed on the western side of the basin. Due to the wider range of azimuths of the fault planes, we observe the switching of sigma(1) and sigma(2) or the switching of sigma(2) and sigma(3) as major horizontal stress directions. This observed switching of stress axes allows having dip-slip and normal mechanisms in a region that is dominated by strike-slip motion
