Production of , , and in hadronic decays
A coherent study of the production of (, 2, 3 corresponding to
, , and ) in is
reported based on a previously proposed glueball and nonet mixing
scheme, and a factorization for the decay of , where
denotes the isoscalar vector mesons and , and denotes
pseudoscalar mesons. The results show that the decays are very
sensitive to the structure of those scalar mesons, and suggest a glueball in
the GeV region, in line with Lattice QCD. The presence of significant
glueball mixings in the scalar wavefunctions produces peculiar patterns in the
branching ratios for , which are in good agreement
with the recently published experimental data from the BES collaboration.Comment: Version accepted by PRD; Numerical results in Tab IV and VI changed

The Active Traveling Wave in the Cochlea
A sound stimulus entering the inner ear excites a deformation of the basilar
membrane which travels along the cochlea towards the apex. It is well
established that this wave-like disturbance is amplified by an active system.
Recently, it has been proposed that the active system consists of a set of
self-tuned critical oscillators which automatically operate at an oscillatory
instability. Here, we show how the concepts of a traveling wave and of
self-tuned critical oscillators can be combined to describe the nonlinear wave

Analysis of electroencephalograms in Alzheimer's disease patients with multiscale entropy
The aim of this study was to analyse the electroencephalogram (EEG) background activity of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients using the Multiscale Entropy (MSE). The MSE is a recently developed method that quantifies the regularity of a signal on different time scales. These time scales are inspected by means of several coarse-grained sequences formed from the analysed signals. We recorded the EEGs from 19 scalp electrodes in 11 AD patients and 11 age-matched controls and estimated the MSE profile for each epoch of the EEG recordings. The shape of the MSE profiles reveals the EEG complexity, and it suggests that the EEG contains information in deeper scales than the smallest one. Moreover, the results showed that the EEG background activity is less complex in AD patients than control subjects. We found significant difference
Strangeness Content in the Nucleon
I review recent studies of strangeness content in the nucleon pertaining to
the flavor-singlet , the matrix element and the strangeness
electric and magnetic form factors and , based on
lattice QCD calculations. I shall also discuss the relevance of incorporating
the strangeness content in nuclei in regard to strange baryon-antibaryon
productions from proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS and RHIC

Glucosylsphingosine Is a Highly Sensitive and Specific Biomarker for Primary Diagnostic and Follow-Up Monitoring in Gaucher Disease in a Non-Jewish, Caucasian Cohort of Gaucher Disease Patients
Gaucher disease (GD) is the most common lysosomal storage disorder (LSD). Based on a deficient β-glucocerebrosidase it leads to an accumulation of glucosylceramide. Standard diagnostic procedures include measurement of enzyme activity, genetic testing as well as analysis of chitotriosidase and CCL18/PARC as biomarkers. Even though chitotriosidase is the most well-established biomarker in GD, it is not specific for GD. Furthermore, it may be false negative in a significant percentage of GD patients due to mutation. Additionally, chitotriosidase reflects the changes in the course of the disease belatedly. This further enhances the need for a reliable biomarker, especially for the monitoring of the disease and the impact of potential treatments.Here, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of the previously reported biomarker Glucosylsphingosine with regard to different control groups (healthy control vs. GD carriers vs. other LSDs).Only GD patients displayed elevated levels of Glucosylsphingosine higher than 12 ng/ml whereas the comparison controls groups revealed concentrations below the pathological cut-off, verifying the specificity of Glucosylsphingosine as a biomarker for GD. In addition, we evaluated the biomarker before and during enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in 19 patients, demonstrating a decrease in Glucosylsphingosine over time with the most pronounced reduction within the first 6 months of ERT. Furthermore, our data reveals a correlation between the medical consequence of specific mutations and Glucosylsphingosine.In summary, Glucosylsphingosine is a very promising, reliable and specific biomarker for GD
Amelioration of Age-Related Cognitive Decline and Anxiety in Mice by Centella Asiatica Extract Varies by Sex, Dose and Mode of Administration
Background: A water extract (CAW) of the Ayurvedic plant Centella asiatica administered in drinking water has been shown to improve cognitive deficits in mouse models of aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Here the effects of CAW administered in drinking water or the diet on cognition, measures of anxiety and depression-like behavior in healthy aged mice are compared.Methods: Three- and eighteen-month-old male and female C57BL6 mice were administered rodent AIN-93M diet containing CAW (0, 0.2, 0.5 or 1% w/w) to provide 0, 200 mg/kg/d, 500 mg/kg/d or 1,000 mg/kg/d CAW for a total of 5 weeks. An additional group of eighteen-month-old mice were treated with CAW (10 mg/mL) in their drinking water CAW for a total of 5 weeks to deliver the same exposure of CAW as the highest dietary dose (1,000 mg/kg/d). CAW doses delivered were calculated based on food and water consumption measured in previous experiments. In the fourth and fifth weeks, mice underwent behavioral testing of cognition, anxiety and depression (n = 12 of each sex per treatment group in each test).Results: Aged mice of both sexes showed cognitive deficits relative to young mice while only female aged mice showed increased anxiety compared to the young female mice and no differences in depression were observed between the different ages. CAW (1,000 mg/kg/d) in the drinking water improved deficits in aged mice in learning, executive function and recognition memory in both sexes and attenuated the increased measures of anxiety observed in the aged female mice. However, CAW in the diet only improved executive function in aged mice at the highest dose (1,000 mg/kg/d) in both sexes and did so less robustly than when given in the water. There were no effects of CAW on depression-like behavior in aged animals regardless of whether it was administered in the diet or the water.Conclusions: These results suggest that CAW can ameliorate age-related changes in measures of anxiety and cognition and that the mode of administration is important for the effects of CAW on resilience to these age-related changes
History of exotic Meson (4-quark) and Baryon (5-quark) States
I briefly review the history of exotic meson (4-quark) and baryon (5-quark)
states, which is rooted in the formalism of Regge pole and duality. There are
robust model-independent predictions for the exchange of 4-quark (Baryonium)
Regge trajectories in several processes, which are strongly supported by
experiment. On the other hand the predictions for the spectroscopy of 4-quark
resonances are based on specific QCD inspired models, with some experimental
support. The corresponding predictions for the recently discovered exotic
baryon (Pentaquark) state are briefly discussed.Comment: 14 pages Latex including 4 eps figures, final version to appear as a

Exploring the QCD landscape with high-energy nuclear collisions
Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase diagram is usually plotted as temperature
(T) versus the chemical potential associated with the conserved baryon number
(\mu_{B}). Two fundamental properties of QCD, related to confinement and chiral
symmetry, allows for two corresponding phase transitions when T and \mu_{B} are
varied. Theoretically the phase diagram is explored through non-perturbative
QCD calculations on lattice. The energy scale for the phase diagram
(\Lambda_{QCD} ~ 200 MeV) is such that it can be explored experimentally by
colliding nuclei at varying beam energies in the laboratory. In this paper we
review some aspects of the QCD phase structure as explored through the
experimental studies using high energy nuclear collisions. Specifically, we
discuss three observations related to the formation of a strongly coupled
plasma of quarks and gluons in the collisions, experimental search for the QCD
critical point on the phase diagram and freeze-out properties of the hadronic

Reduced level of arousal and increased mortality in adult acute medical admissions: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Abstract Background Reduced level of arousal is commonly observed in medical admissions and may predict in-hospital mortality. Delirium and reduced level of arousal are closely related. We systematically reviewed and conducted a meta-analysis of studies in adult acute medical patients of the relationship between reduced level of arousal on admission and in-hospital mortality. Methods We conducted a systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42016022048), searching MEDLINE and EMBASE. We included studies of adult patients admitted with acute medical illness with level of arousal assessed on admission and mortality rates reported. We performed meta-analysis using a random effects model. Results From 23,941 studies we included 21 with 14 included in the meta-analysis. Mean age range was 33.4 - 83.8 years. Studies considered unselected general medical admissions (8 studies, n=13,039) or specific medical conditions (13 studies, n=38,882). Methods of evaluating level of arousal varied. The prevalence of reduced level of arousal was 3.1%-76.9% (median 13.5%). Mortality rates were 1.7%-58% (median 15.9%). Reduced level of arousal was associated with higher in-hospital mortality (pooled OR 5.71; 95% CI 4.21-7.74; low quality evidence: high risk of bias, clinical heterogeneity and possible publication bias). Conclusions Reduced level of arousal on hospital admission may be a strong predictor of in-hospital mortality. Most evidence was of low quality. Reduced level of arousal is highly specific to delirium, better formal detection of hypoactive delirium and implementation of care pathways may improve outcomes. Future studies to assess the impact of interventions on in-hospital mortality should use validated assessments of both level of arousal and delirium
