    Molecular imaging using high-order harmonic generation and above-threshold ionization

    Accurate molecular imaging via high-order harmonic generation relies on comparing the harmonic emission from a molecule and an adequate reference system. However, an ideal reference atom with the same ionization properties as the molecule does not always exist. We show that for suitably designed, very short laser pulses, a one-to-one mapping between high-order harmonic frequencies and electron momenta in above-threshold ionization exists. Comparing molecular and atomic momentum distributions then provides the electron return amplitude in the molecule for every harmonic frequency. We show that the method retrieves the molecular recombination transition moments highly accurately, even with suboptimal reference atoms.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Entrepreneurs who start a business to serve both self-interests and collective interests by addressing unmet social and environmental needs are usually referred to as sustainable entrepreneurs. Compared with regular entrepreneurs, we argue that sustainable entrepreneurs face specific challenges when establishing their businesses owing to the discrepancy between the creation and appropriation of private value and social value. We hypothesize that when starting a business, sustainable entrepreneurs (1) feel more hampered by perceived barriers, such as the institutional environment and (2) have a different risk attitude and perception than regular entrepreneurs. We use two waves of the Flash Eurobarometer survey on entrepreneurship (2009 and 2012), which contains information on start-up motivations, start-up barriers, and risk perceptions of approximately 3000 (prospective) business owners across 33 countries. We find that sustainable entrepreneurs indeed perceive more institutional barriers in terms of a lack of financial, administrative, and informational support at business start-up than regular entrepreneurs. Further, no significant differences between sustainable and regular entrepreneurs are found in terms of their risk attitudes or perceived financial risks. However, sustainable entrepreneurs are more likely to fear personal failure than regular entrepreneurs, which is explained by their varied and complex stakeholder relations. These insights may serve as an important signal for both governments and private capital providers in enhancing the institutional climate

    The deepest record of the octocoral Acanthogorgia from the Red Sea

    Octocorals (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) have a global distribution and form benthic assemblages along the depth gradient, from shallow to deep waters. They often occur below SCUBA diving limits, where they can become dominant habitat builders and aggregate different taxa. During a cruise in February 2023, one octocoral specimen was collected at 1453 m depth at Kebrit Deep, in the northern Saudi Arabian Red Sea axis, an area with extremely high temperature and salinity profiles at depth. Morphological analysis coupled with DNA barcoding using two mitochondrial markers (COI and mtMuts), revealed that the coral belongs to Acanthogorgia, a genus of azooxanthellate octocorals known to occur from 3 to 2300 m depths in cold, temperate and tropical waters. In the Red Sea, the genus was previously only known from shallower waters. Hence, we report the deepest record of the genus Acanthogorgia from the warm and saline Red Sea basin. This finding provides novel insights on deep-water octocoral diversity in the Red Sea, a still scantily explored area of the world, while emphasizing the need for further explorations at depth

    The Landau-Lifshitz fluctuating hydrodynamics is used to study the statistical properties of the linearized Kolmogorov flow. The relative simplicity of this flow allows a detailed analysis of the fluctuation spectrum from near equilibrium regime up to the vicinity of the first convective instability threshold. It is shown that in the long time limit the flow behaves as an incompressible fluid, regardless of the value of the Reynolds number. This is not the case for the short time behavior where the incompressibility assumption leads in general to a wrong form of the static correlation functions, except near the instability threshold. The theoretical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations of the full nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamic equations.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure

    Driving pressure during general anesthesia for open abdominal surgery (DESIGNATION) : study protocol of a randomized clinical trial

    Background Intraoperative driving pressure (Delta P) is associated with development of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC). When tidal volume (V-T) is kept constant, Delta P may change according to positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP)-induced changes in lung aeration. Delta P may decrease if PEEP leads to a recruitment of collapsed lung tissue but will increase if PEEP mainly causes pulmonary overdistension. This study tests the hypothesis that individualized high PEEP, when compared to fixed low PEEP, protects against PPC in patients undergoing open abdominal surgery. Methods The "Driving prESsure durIng GeNeral AnesThesIa for Open abdomiNal surgery trial" (DESIGNATION) is an international, multicenter, two-group, double-blind randomized clinical superiority trial. A total of 1468 patients will be randomly assigned to one of the two intraoperative ventilation strategies. Investigators screen patients aged >= 18 years and with a body mass index <= 40 kg/m(2), scheduled for open abdominal surgery and at risk for PPC. Patients either receive an intraoperative ventilation strategy with individualized high PEEP with recruitment maneuvers (RM) ("individualized high PEEP") or one in which PEEP of 5 cm H2O without RM is used ("low PEEP"). In the "individualized high PEEP" group, PEEP is set at the level at which Delta P is lowest. In both groups of the trial, V-T is kept at 8 mL/kg predicted body weight. The primary endpoint is the occurrence of PPC, recorded as a collapsed composite of adverse pulmonary events. Discussion DESIGNATION will be the first randomized clinical trial that is adequately powered to compare the effects of individualized high PEEP with RM versus fixed low PEEP without RM on the occurrence of PPC after open abdominal surgery. The results of DESIGNATION will support anesthesiologists in their decisions regarding PEEP settings during open abdominal surgery

    Electromagnetic-Guided MLC Tracking Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer Patients: Prospective Clinical Trial Results.

    PURPOSE: To report on the primary and secondary outcomes of a prospective clinical trial of electromagnetic-guided multileaf collimator (MLC) tracking radiation therapy for prostate cancer. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Twenty-eight men with prostate cancer were treated with electromagnetic-guided MLC tracking with volumetric modulated arc therapy. A total of 858 fractions were delivered, with the dose per fraction ranging from 2 to 13.75 Gy. The primary outcome was feasibility, with success determined if >95% of fractions were successfully delivered. The secondary outcomes were (1) the improvement in beam-target geometric alignment, (2) the improvement in dosimetric coverage of the prostate and avoidance of critical structures, and (3) no acute grade ≥3 genitourinary or gastrointestinal toxicity. RESULTS: All 858 planned fractions were successfully delivered with MLC tracking, demonstrating the primary outcome of feasibility (P < .001). MLC tracking improved the beam-target geometric alignment from 1.4 to 0.90 mm (root-mean-square error). MLC tracking improved the dosimetric coverage of the prostate and reduced the daily variation in dose to critical structures. No acute grade ≥3 genitourinary or gastrointestinal toxicity was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Electromagnetic-guided MLC tracking radiation therapy for prostate cancer is feasible. The patients received improved geometric targeting and delivered dose distributions that were closer to those planned than they would have received without electromagnetic-guided MLC tracking. No significant acute toxicity was observed
