التأمين الإسلامي: تطور التأمين الإسلامي (التكافل) واحتمالية نماء الطلب
Abstract. Takaful is an alternative form of financial instrument to insure assets, liabilities and other personal interests of individuals and organizations. Almost 30 years later, takaful has grown at such a rapid rate and the market has expanded from Western Asia, South Asia, South East Asia, Africa which are predominantly Muslim populated countries and recently has made its appearance in parts of Europe and North America. The impressive growth world wide and potential expansion into new western markets has a strong implication to would-be takaful operators to gear themselves with innovative takaful products and to match the service quality of the traditional insurance market to cater to the close to a billion Muslim market scattered in many parts of the world
Adverse selection and its consequences on medical and health insurance and takaful in Malaysia
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate first, the consumer buying behaviour and claims pattern of medical and health insurance (MHI)/medical and health takaful (MHT) policies and second, to determine whether moral hazard exists among policyholders at the time of application for the product and during claiming for compensation. Design/methodology/approach – The study was conducted on respondents from the insurance industry in Malaysia. Findings – It was found that most claims were rejected due to the discovery of some irregularities by the managed care organizations (MCO) while the Islamic insurer's claims experience, was otherwise. During the buying behaviour stage of MHT, there are fewer tendencies to withhold information but during the claiming stage, due to the generous level of compensation and their awareness of the coverage available naturally influence them to submit excessive claims. To a certain extent moral hazard is present when claims are made for longer disability durations than necessary, and having high average claims per person even for shorter duration disabilities. Research limitations/implications – The paper concentrates only on the MHI/MHT in Malaysia. Practical implications – The results provide insights on how the Malaysian insurance industry and other organizations of a similar structure could improve on their business performance. Originality/value – This paper is perhaps one of the first to address adverse selection and its consequences on MHI/MHT in Malaysia.Consumer behaviour, Health insurance, Malaysia, Medical insurance, Moral hazards, Selection

Islamic perspectives on risk and insurance marketing
This chapter sets out to achieve two key aims: to present the philosophical and critical perspectives underpinning the marketing of Islamic insurance products and services and to provide the foundation and basis for recommending appropriate stepwise marketing practices. A final point of reference is that it is assumed within this chapter that the insurance products in question have been created already and so discussions focus on branding, marketing communications, consumer behaviour and service delivery of these products. Product issues surrounding the design and Sharia’ compliance (codes and laws derived from Islam) fall outside of the scope of this chapter, but are covered in Chapter 26. The chapter thus bridges the gap between conventional marketing theory and practice that calls for specialized understanding, positioning and execution. Having stated this, it is also important to assert that in this chapter, marketing, Islam and Muslims are not viewed as monolithic entities or homogenous units, nor does the marketing of Islamic financial services necessarily signal a complete departure from conventional marketing concepts or simply a niche area. Rather, each are interconnected, culturally rooted and subject to environmental factors. The three key factors argued for are the call to evaluate Muslims’ perspectives concerning risk, appraising the needs of a broad base of stakeholders and modes of communication subject to cultures and geographies
