Sensation Seeking and Perceived Need for Structure Moderate Soldiers’ Well-Being Before and After Operational Deployment
This study examined associations between sensation seeking and perceived need for structure, and changes in reported well-being among deployed soldiers. Participants (n = 167) were assessed before and after a six-month deployment to south Afghanistan. Results indicated that although well-being declined in the soldier sample as a whole following deployment, the degree of decrease was significantly different among soldiers with different personality profiles. Differences were moderated by soldiers’ level of sensation seeking and perceived need for structure. Results are discussed in terms of a person-environment fit theory in the context of preparation and rehabilitation of deployed military personnel
The Absence of Cold Dust and the Mineralogy and Origin of the Warm Dust Encircling BD +20 307
Spitzer Space Telescope photometry and spectroscopy of BD +20 307 show that
all of the dust around this remarkable Gyr-old spectroscopic binary arises
within 1 AU. No additional cold dust is needed to fit the infrared excess.
Peaks in the 10 and 20 micron spectrum are well fit with small silicates that
should be removed on a timescale of years from the system. This is the dustiest
star known for its age, which is >1 Gyr. The dust cannot arise from a
steady-state collisional cascade. A catastrophic collision of two rocky,
planetary-scale bodies in the terrestrial zone is the most likely source for
this warm dust because it does not require a reservoir of planetesimals in the
outer system.Comment: accepted to ApJ; 3 color figure
Scratching the Surface and Digging Deeper: Exploring Ecological Theories in Urban Soils
Humans have altered the Earth more extensively during the past 50 years than at any other time in history (Millennium Assessment 2003). A significant part of this global change is the conversion of land covers from native ecosystems to those dominated by human activities (Kareiva et al. 2007; Ellis and Ramankutty 2008). Although agricultural needs have historicall
Ensuring an Impartial Jury in the Age of Social Media
The explosive growth of social networking has placed enormous pressure on one of the most fundamental of American institutions—the impartial jury. Through social networking services like Facebook and Twitter, jurors have committed significant and often high-profile acts of misconduct. Just recently, the Arkansas Supreme Court reversed a death sentence because a juror Tweeted about the case during deliberations. In light of the significant risks to a fair trial that arise when jurors communicate through social media during trial, judges must be vigilant in monitoring for potential outside influences and in deterring misconduct.
In this Article, we present informal survey data from actual jurors on their use of social networking during trial. We discuss the rise of web-based social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and the concerns that arise when jurors communicate about a case through social media before returning a verdict. After surveying how courts have responded to jurors’ social media use, we describe the results of the informal survey. The results support a growing consensus in the legal profession that courts should frequently, as a matter of course, instruct jurors not to use social media to communicate about trial. Although others have stressed the importance of jury instructions in this area, we hope that the informal survey data will further the dialogue by providing an important perspective—that of actual jurors
Balloon occlusion retrograde transvenous obliteration of gastric varices in two non-cirrhotic patients with portal vein thrombosis
This report describes two non-cirrhotic patients with portal vein thrombosis who underwent successful balloon occlusion retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO) of gastric varices with a satisfactory response and no complications. One patient was a 35-year-old female with a history of Crohn's disease, status post-total abdominal colectomy, and portal vein and mesenteric vein thrombosis. The other patient was a 51-year-old female with necrotizing pancreatitis, portal vein thrombosis, and gastric varices. The BRTO procedure was a useful treatment for gastric varices in non-cirrhotic patients with portal vein thrombosis in the presence of a gastrorenal shunt
Decay rate and other properties of the positronium negative ion
A new method for detecting the positronium minus ion is described, and the possibility of a long positronium mean free path in a solid is discussed
VLT/X-shooter observations and the chemical composition of cool white dwarfs
We present a model atmosphere analysis of cool hydrogen-rich white dwarfs
observed at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) with the X-shooter spectrograph. The
intermediate-dispersion and high signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra allowed
us to conduct a detailed analysis of hydrogen and heavy element line profiles.
In particular, we tested various prescriptions for hydrogen Balmer line
broadening parameters and determined the effective temperature and surface
gravity of each star. Three objects (NLTT 1675, 6390 and 11393) show the
presence of heavy elements (Mg, Al, Ca, or Fe). Our abundance analysis revealed
a relatively high iron to calcium ratio in NLTT 1675 and NLTT 6390. We also
present an analysis of spectropolarimetric data obtained at the VLT using the
focal reducer and low dispersion spectrograph (FORS) and we established strict
upper limits on the magnetic field strengths in three of the DAZ white dwarfs
and determined the longitudinal magnetic field strength in the DAZ NLTT 10480.
The class of DAZ white dwarfs comprises objects that are possibly accreting
material from their immediate circumstellar environment and the present study
contributes in establishing class properties.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic
Potential benefits of an adaptive forward collision warning system
Forward collision warning (FCW) systems can reduce rear-end vehicle collisions. However, if the presentation of warnings is perceived as mistimed, trust in the system is diminished and drivers become less likely to respond appropriately. In this driving simulator investigation, 45 drivers experienced two FCW systems: a non-adaptive and an adaptive FCW that adjusted the timing of its alarms according to each individual driver’s reaction time. Whilst all drivers benefited in terms of improved safety from both FCW systems, non-aggressive drivers (low sensation seeking, long followers) did not display a preference to the adaptive FCW over its non-adaptive equivalent. Furthermore, there was little evidence to suggest that the non-aggressive drivers’ performance differed with either system. Benefits of the adaptive system were demonstrated for aggressive drivers (high sensation seeking, short followers). Even though both systems reduced their likelihood of a crash to a similar extent, the aggressive drivers rated each FCW more poorly than their non-aggressive contemporaries. However, this group, with their greater risk of involvement in rear-end collisions, reported a preference for the adaptive system as they found it less irritating and stress-inducing. Achieving greater acceptance and hence likely use of a real system is fundamental to good quality FCW design
A deep photometric survey of the eta Chamaeleontis cluster down to the brown dwarf - planet boundary
We report the outcome of the deep optical/infrared photometric survey of the
central region (33 X 33 arcmin or 0.9 pc^2) of the eta Chamaeleontis pre-main
sequence star cluster. The completeness limits of the photometry are I = 19.1,
J = 18.2 and H = 17.6; faint enough to reveal low mass members down to the
brown dwarf and planet boundary of ~ 13 M_Jup. We found no such low mass
members in this region. Our result combined with a previous shallower (I = 17)
but larger area survey indicates that low mass objects (0.013 < M/M(solar mass)
< 0.075) either were not created in the eta Cha cluster or were lost due to the
early dynamical history of the cluster and ejected to outside the surveyed
areas.Comment: 5 pages with 4 figures, accepted by MNRA
