Is There Only One Solution of the Dyson-Schwinger Equation for Quark Propagator in the Case of Non-zero Current Quark Mass

In this letter it is shown on general ground that there exist two qualitatively distinct solutions of the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the quark propagator in the case of non-zero current quark mass. One solution corresponds to the ``Nambu-Goldstone'' phase and the other one corresponds to the ``Wigner'' phase in the chiral limit.Comment: 7 page

Ecology and hydrology of early rice farming: geoarchaeological and palaeo-ecological evidence from the Late Holocene paddy field site at Maoshan, the Lower Yangtze

The well-preserved Maoshan paddy fields (4700–4300 bp) were built on an intermediate landscape between the foothills and alluvial plain of the Lower Yangtze River. Despite several interdisciplinary research, there has been a lack of detailed environmental and ecological data to contextualise the reconstructed rice farming practices within a wider paleo-environmental background. Our research provides key information on the chronology, vegetation, and long-term hydrological fluctuations at and surrounding the paddy fields. Our 14C and OSL dates show that the initial occupation began at around 5740 ± 140 cal. bp, and the paddy fields were built at around 4675 ± 145 cal. bp and were in use continuously until around 4000 cal. bp. Our pollen, diatom and phytolith data shows that whilst the vegetation in the field was sensitive to changes caused by water management and rice farming, the ecological system surrounding the fields was relatively stable. We suggest that this high frequency of in-field vegetation changes was closely related to intensifying water management for rice farming. This thesis is supported by our geophysical and geochemical analyses of bulk sediments, which shows that the steady build-up of the alluvial sequence was punctuated by several short-term episodes of high-energy surface runoff, including strong flushing in of sandy sediments into the fields perhaps through irrigation activities. Our paleo-ecological and geoarchaeological investigation at Maoshan permits an overview of the development of rice farming and intensifying water management practices in a wider environmental context and offers significant insights to the ongoing debate on the wet-dry dichotomy of early rice farming

Identification, isolation and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Aeromonas veronii associated with an acute death of Channel Catfish (Ictalurus lunetas) in China

    Get PDF
Aeromonas veronii is a common pathogen in both humans and animals. It exists in the environment we live. Many reports showed it could lead to human infection but few demonstrated its effect on aquatic animals, especially Channel Catfish (Ictalurus lunetaus). Here, A. veronii was isolated from an acute death case of Channel Catfish in Southwestern China. This Gram-negative bacillus was identified by 16S rRNA sequencing. Antimicrobial susceptibility was also conducted to guide the treatment of the disease

Crystallography, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity of heavy fermion LiV2_2O4_4 single crystals grown using a self-flux technique

Magnetically pure spinel compound LiV2O4{\rm LiV_2O_4} is a rare dd-electron heavy fermion. Measurements on single crystals are needed to clarify the mechanism for the heavy fermion behavior in the pure material. In addition, it is known that small concentrations (<1< 1 mol%) of magnetic defects in the structure strongly affect the properties, and measurements on single crystals containing magnetic defects would help to understand the latter behaviors. Herein, we report flux growth of LiV2O4{\rm LiV_2O_4} and preliminary measurements to help resolve these questions. The magnetic susceptibility of some as-grown crystals show a Curie-like upturn at low temperatures, showing the presence of magnetic defects within the spinel structure. The magnetic defects could be removed in some of the crystals by annealing them at 700 ^\circC\@. A very high specific heat coefficient γ\gamma = 450 mJ/(mol K2{^2}\@) was obtained at a temperature of 1.8 K for a crystal containing a magnetic defect concentration nndefect{\rm_{defect}} = 0.5 mol%. A crystal with nndefect{\rm _{defect}} = 0.01 mol% showed a residual resistivity ratio of 50.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, Title modifie

Written records of historical tsunamis in the northeastern South China Sea - Challenges associated with developing a new integrated database

    Get PDF
Comprehensive analysis of 15 previously published regional databases incorporating more than 100 sources leads to a newly revised historical tsunami database for the northeastern (NE) region of the South China Sea (SCS) including Taiwan. The validity of each reported historical tsunami event listed in our database is assessed by comparing and contrasting the information and descriptions provided in the other databases. All earlier databases suffer from errors associated with inaccuracies in translation between different languages, calendars and location names. The new database contains 205 records of "events" reported to have occurred between AD 1076 and 2009. We identify and investigate 58 recorded tsunami events in the region. The validity of each event is based on the consistency and accuracy of the reports along with the relative number of individual records for that event. Of the 58 events, 23 are regarded as "valid" (confirmed) events, three are "probable" events and six are "possible". Eighteen events are considered "doubtful" and eight events "invalid". The most destructive tsunami of the 23 valid events occurred in 1867 and affected Keelung, northern Taiwan, killing at least 100 people. Inaccuracies in the historical record aside, this new database highlights the occurrence and geographical extent of several large tsunamis in the NE SCS region and allows an elementary statistical analysis of annual recurrence intervals. Based on historical records from 1951-2009 the probability of a tsunami (from any source) affecting the region in any given year is relatively high (33.4%). However, the likelihood of a tsunami that has a wave height >1 m, and/or causes fatalities and damage to infrastructure occurring in the region in any given year is low (1-2%). This work indicates the need for further research using coastal stratigraphy and inundation modeling to help validate some of the historical accounts of tsunamis as well as adequately evaluate the recurrence intervals of tsunamis along the now heavily developed coastlines of the region. © Author(s) 2010.published_or_final_versio

SCRLH-TL Based Sequential Rotation Feed Network for Broadband Circularly Polarized Antenna Array

    Get PDF
In this paper, a broadband circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antenna array using composite right/left-handed transmission line (SCRLH-TL) based sequential rotation (SR) feed network is presented. The characteristics of a SCRLH-TL are initially investigated. Then, a broadband and low insertion loss 45º phase shifter is designed using the SCRLH-TL and the phase shifter is employed in constructing a SR feed network for CP antenna array. To validate the design method of the SR feed network, a 2×2 antenna array comprising sequentially rotated coupled stacked CP antenna elements is designed, fabricated and measured. Both the simulated and measured results indicate that the performances of the antenna element are further enhanced when the SR network is used. The antenna array exhibits the VSWR less than 1.8 dB from 4 GHz to 7 GHz and the 3 dB axial ratio (AR) from 4.4 GHz to 6.8 GHz. Also, high peak gain of 13.7 dBic is obtained. Besides, the normalized radiation patterns at the operating frequencies are symmetrical and the side lobe levels are low at φ=0º and φ=90º

Improved cosmological constraints on the curvature and equation of state of dark energy

We apply the Constitution compilation of 397 supernova Ia, the baryon acoustic oscillation measurements including the AA parameter, the distance ratio and the radial data, the five-year Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe and the Hubble parameter data to study the geometry of the universe and the property of dark energy by using the popular Chevallier-Polarski-Linder and Jassal-Bagla-Padmanabhan parameterizations. We compare the simple χ2\chi^2 method of joined contour estimation and the Monte Carlo Markov chain method, and find that it is necessary to make the marginalized analysis on the error estimation. The probabilities of Ωk\Omega_k and waw_a in the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder model are skew distributions, and the marginalized 1σ1\sigma errors are Ωm=0.2790.008+0.015\Omega_m=0.279^{+0.015}_{-0.008}, Ωk=0.0050.011+0.006\Omega_k=0.005^{+0.006}_{-0.011}, w0=1.050.06+0.23w_0=-1.05^{+0.23}_{-0.06}, and wa=0.51.5+0.3w_a=0.5^{+0.3}_{-1.5}. For the Jassal-Bagla-Padmanabhan model, the marginalized 1σ1\sigma errors are Ωm=0.2810.01+0.015\Omega_m=0.281^{+0.015}_{-0.01}, Ωk=0.0000.006+0.007\Omega_k=0.000^{+0.007}_{-0.006}, w0=0.960.18+0.25w_0=-0.96^{+0.25}_{-0.18}, and wa=0.61.6+1.9w_a=-0.6^{+1.9}_{-1.6}. The equation of state parameter w(z)w(z) of dark energy is negative in the redshift range 0z20\le z\le 2 at more than 3σ3\sigma level. The flat Λ\LambdaCDM model is consistent with the current observational data at the 1σ1\sigma level.Comment: 10 figures, 12 pages, Classical and Quantum Gravity in press; v2 to match the pulished versio

Decays of Zb(+) and Zb'(+) as hadronic molecules

The two newly observed hidden-bottom mesons Zb(10610) and Zb'(10650) with quantum numbers J(P) = 1(+) are considered as hadronic molecules composed of BB(*) and B(*)B(*), respectively. We give predictions for the widths of the strong two-body decays Zb(+) to Upsilon(nS) + pi(+) and Zb'(+) to Upsilon(nS) + pi(+) in a phenomenological Lagrangian approach.Comment: 9 page
