    LPFormer: LiDAR Pose Estimation Transformer with Multi-Task Network

    In this technical report, we present the 1st place solution for the 2023 Waymo Open Dataset Pose Estimation challenge. Due to the difficulty of acquiring large-scale 3D human keypoint annotation, previous methods have commonly relied on 2D image features and 2D sequential annotations for 3D human pose estimation. In contrast, our proposed method, named LPFormer, uses only LiDAR as its input along with its corresponding 3D annotations. LPFormer consists of two stages: the first stage detects the human bounding box and extracts multi-level feature representations, while the second stage employs a transformer-based network to regress the human keypoints using these features. Experimental results on the Waymo Open Dataset demonstrate the top performance, and improvements even compared to previous multi-modal solutions.Comment: Technical report of the top solution for the Waymo Open Dataset Challenges 2023 - Pose Estimation.     LidarMultiNet: Towards a Unified Multi-task Network for LiDAR Perception

    LiDAR-based 3D object detection, semantic segmentation, and panoptic segmentation are usually implemented in specialized networks with distinctive architectures that are difficult to adapt to each other. This paper presents LidarMultiNet, a LiDAR-based multi-task network that unifies these three major LiDAR perception tasks. Among its many benefits, a multi-task network can reduce the overall cost by sharing weights and computation among multiple tasks. However, it typically underperforms compared to independently combined single-task models. The proposed LidarMultiNet aims to bridge the performance gap between the multi-task network and multiple single-task networks. At the core of LidarMultiNet is a strong 3D voxel-based encoder-decoder architecture with a Global Context Pooling (GCP) module extracting global contextual features from a LiDAR frame. Task-specific heads are added on top of the network to perform the three LiDAR perception tasks. More tasks can be implemented simply by adding new task-specific heads while introducing little additional cost. A second stage is also proposed to refine the first-stage segmentation and generate accurate panoptic segmentation results. LidarMultiNet is extensively tested on both Waymo Open Dataset and nuScenes dataset, demonstrating for the first time that major LiDAR perception tasks can be unified in a single strong network that is trained end-to-end and achieves state-of-the-art performance. Notably, LidarMultiNet reaches the official 1st place in the Waymo Open Dataset 3D semantic segmentation challenge 2022 with the highest mIoU and the best accuracy for most of the 22 classes on the test set, using only LiDAR points as input.     Empagliflozin inhibits coronary microvascular dysfunction and reduces cardiac pericyte loss in db/db mice

    BackgroundCoronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is a pathophysiological feature of diabetic heart disease. However, whether sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors protect the cardiovascular system by alleviating CMD is not known.ObjectiveWe observed the protective effects of empagliflozin (EMPA) on diabetic CMD.Materials and methodsThe mice were randomly divided into a db/db group and a db/db + EMPA group, and db/m mice served as controls. At 8 weeks of age, the db/db + EMPA group was given empagliflozin 10 mg/(kg⋅d) by gavage for 8 weeks. Body weight, fasting blood glucose and blood pressure were dynamically observed. Cardiac systolic and diastolic function and coronary flow reserve (CFR) were detected using echocardiography. The coronary microvascular structure and distribution of cardiac pericytes were observed using immunofluorescence staining. Picrosirius red staining was performed to evaluate cardiac fibrosis.ResultsEmpagliflozin lowered the increased fasting blood glucose levels of the db/db group. The left ventricular ejection fraction, left ventricular fractional shortening, E/A ratio and E/eâ€Č ratio were not significantly different between the three groups. CFR was decreased in the db/db group, but EMPA significantly improved CFR. In contrast to the sparse and abnormal expansion of coronary microvessels observed in the db/db group, the number of coronary microvessels was increased, and the capillary diameter was decreased in the db/db + EMPA group. The number and microvascular coverage of cardiac pericytes were reduced in the db/db mice but were improved by EMPA. The cardiac fibrosis was increased in db/db group and may alleviate by EMPA.ConclusionEmpagliflozin inhibited CMD and reduced cardiac pericyte loss in diabetic mice

    Mediating effect of self-concealment between non-suicidal self-injury and internet addiction in college students: a cross-sectional study

    Abstract Background Internet addiction, defined as uncontrolled behaviour resulting from the use of the Internet without the influence of addictive substances, which can seriously impair academic, occupational and social functioning. Non-suicidal self-injury, defined as self-injurious behaviour without the intent to die, and its addictive characteristics are similar to those of Internet addiction. Currently, there is a lack of research on the relationship between non-suicidal self-injury and Internet addiction. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between non-suicidal self-injury and internet addiction among college students and the role of self-concealment in this relationship. Methods In this study, data were collected online between December 2022 and January 2023 from 600 university students in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, using purposive sampling. The questionnaires included the Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Inventory (NSSI), the Self-Concealment Scale (SCS) and the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). Results A total of 573 valid questionnaires were recovered, with a valid recovery rate of 95.50%. Conclution The results suggest that self-concealment plays a partial mediating role between non-suicidal self-injury and internet addiction among college students. The authors emphasized the importance of internet addiction. In order to reduce the occurrence of internet addiction, schools should provide targeted interventions to promote the psychological health of college students’ internet addictive behaviours

    Silicon Reduces Aluminum-Induced Suberization by Inhibiting the Uptake and Transport of Aluminum in Rice Roots and Consequently Promotes Root Growth

    Silicon (Si) can alleviate aluminum (Al) toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa L.), but the mechanisms underlying this beneficial effect have not been elucidated, especially under long-term Al stress. Here, the effects of Al and Si on the suberization and development of rice roots were investigated. The results show that, as the Al exposure time increased, the roots accumulated more Al, and Al enhanced the deposition of suberin in roots, both of which ultimately inhibited root growth and nutrient absorption. However, Si restricted the apoplastic and symplastic pathways of Al in roots by inhibiting the uptake and transport of Al, thereby reducing the accumulation of Al in roots. Meanwhile, the Si-induced drop in Al concentration reduced the suberization of roots caused by Al through down-regulating the expression of genes related to suberin synthesis and then promoted the development of roots (such as longer and more adventitious roots and lateral roots). Moreover, Si also increased nutrient uptake by Al-stressed roots and thence promoted the growth of rice. Overall, these results indicate that Si reduced Al-induced suberization of roots by inhibiting the uptake and transport of Al in roots, thereby amending root growth and ultimately alleviating Al stress in rice. Our study further clarified the toxicity mechanism of Al in rice and the role of Si in reducing Al content and restoring root development under Al stress

    Predictive value of the stress hyperglycemia ratio in dialysis patients with acute coronary syndrome: insights from a multi-center observational study

    Abstract Background Various studies have indicated that stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) can reflect true acute hyperglycemic status and is associated with poor outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, data on dialysis patients with ACS are limited. The Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) risk score is a well-validated risk prediction tool for ACS patients, yet it underestimates the risk of major events in patients receiving dialysis. This study aimed to evaluate the association between SHR and adverse cardiovascular events in dialysis patients with ACS and explore the potential incremental prognostic value of incorporating SHR into the GRACE risk score. Methods This study enrolled 714 dialysis patients with ACS from January 2015 to June 2021 at 30 tertiary medical centers in China. Patients were stratified into three groups based on the tertiles of SHR. The primary outcome was major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and the secondary outcomes were all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality. Results After a median follow-up of 20.9 months, 345 (48.3%) MACE and 280 (39.2%) all-cause mortality occurred, comprising 205 cases of cardiovascular death. When the highest SHR tertile was compared to the second SHR tertile, a significantly increased risk of MACE (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.92; 95% CI, 1.48–2.49), all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.19; 95% CI, 1.64–2.93), and cardiovascular mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.70; 95% CI, 1.90–3.83) was identified in the multivariable Cox regression model. A similar association was observed in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients. Further restricted cubic spline analysis identified a J-shaped association between the SHR and primary and secondary outcomes, with hazard ratios for MACE and mortality significantly increasing when SHR was > 1.08. Furthermore, adding SHR to the GRACE score led to a significant improvement in its predictive accuracy for MACE and mortality, as measured by the C-statistic, net reclassification improvement, and integrated discrimination improvement, especially for those with diabetes. Conclusions In dialysis patients with ACS, SHR was independently associated with increased risks of MACE and mortality. Furthermore, SHR may aid in improving the predictive efficiency of the GRACE score, especially for those with diabetes. These results indicated that SHR might be a valuable tool for risk stratification and management of dialysis patients with ACS

    Meta-analysis of the relationship between bullying and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents

    Abstract Childhood and adolescence are critical periods for physical and mental development; thus, they are high-risk periods for the occurrence of mental disorders. The purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate the association between bullying and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. We searched the PubMed, MEDLINE and other databases to identify studies related to bullying behavior and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. A total of 31 studies were included, with a total sample size of 133,688 people. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the risk of depression in children and adolescents who were bullied was 2.77 times higher than that of those who were not bullied; the risk of depression in bullying individuals was 1.73 times higher than that in nonbullying individuals; and the risk of depression in individuals who bullied and experienced bullying was 3.19 times higher than that in nonbullying-bullied individuals. This study confirmed that depression in children and adolescents was significantly associated with being bullied, bullying, and bullying-bullied behavior. However, these findings are limited by the quantity and quality of the included studies and need to be confirmed by future studies
