    E-waste handling process from A to Z in Portugal

    The conference “E-waste handling process from A to Z in Portugal”, held in Portugal on May 6 and 13, 2014, and focused on the general aspects in the treatment of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) at the end of life cycle was carried out under the program EWASTEU - Legal Regulations and Implementations on e-waste in EU. This program had its first edition in 2013 in Yasar University (Izmir, Turkey), with the participation of several higher education institutions in Europe, including the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (Portugal). The project aims to promote discussion, reflection and awareness about the issues related to the waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The conference allowed a clear view of the processes involving the EEE since its entry to the stages of collection, management and recycling. Among the entities involved, we highlight the ANREEE - National Association of Registration of Electrical and Electronic Equipment, ERP Portugal (one of the two managing bodies of WEEE in Portugal), Interecycling (1st Portuguese WEEE recycling company) and RESITEJO – Association of Management and Treatment of Waste in the Middle Tagus.     Burden and Depressive Symptoms Associated with Adult-Child Caregiving for Individuals with Heart Failure

    Background. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate adult-child caregiver burden in heart failure (HF) patients. Secondary purpose of the study was to identify the possible influencing factors for caregiver burden and depressive symptoms in a young adult-child caregiver group. Methods. A total of 138 adult-child caregivers and 138 patients with HF participated in this study. Caregivers' burden, depressive symptoms, and anxiety levels were assessed by using Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale (ZCBS), Beck Depression Inventory, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, respectively. Results. The mean ZCBS scores of the female caregivers were significantly higher than male caregivers. Approximately one-third of the adult-child caregivers had at least mild depressive symptoms. Caregivers with higher depressive symptoms had higher levels of caregiver burden. There were positive correlations between caregiving time, severity of depressive symptoms, and perceived caregiver burden. There was a negative correlation between education level of caregivers and perceived caregiver burden. Age, socioeconomic level, and marital status of patients were affecting factors for depressive symptoms in caregivers. Among caregiver characteristics, gender, marital status, and ZCBS scores seem to influence the depression in caregivers. Conclusions. The study findings suggest significant levels of burden and depressive symptoms even in adult-child caregivers of HF patients

    Behavioural Profiling In Mobile Networks

As mobile devices give us the much needed flexibility and mobility, they also represent one major concern; security. As the information is transmitted from node to node via radio frequencies, an imposter can gain access into a mobile network without the need to gain physical access to firewalls and gateways. Also, as they are light and small, mobile devices are easily lost and often used without any PIN or password protection enabled. Hence, it is not difficult for someone even without any technical knowledge to gain access to such devices if they have been left behind or stolen. As traditional intrusion detection systems are not very effective against this kind of attack, there is a need of a different approach that can assist in the identification of a potential imposter. This thesis begins by assessing the security needs of the mobile devices, and establishes the perceived inadequacy of existing safeguards in this respect. Therefore this research considers using Behaviour-Based Mobile Intrusion Detection System (BeMIDS) that aims to assist the identification of anomalous user activity. This in return presents the two main characteristics needed to classify a legitimate user inside a mobile network: first with whom, when and what type of connection is established and then at where the mobile device is left open. After this the research proposes a novel approach that investigates the application of three machine learning algorithms to profile user behaviour in mobile networks. In BeMIDS, historical user profiles are created and then compared with the real-time ones in order to detect unusual activity in mobile networks. If a user’s behaviour changes, this results in alerting the system as an anomalous activity. Specific examples of behaviours that BeMIDS appears to be particularly sensitive to include duration (of calls and of connection with cell towers), time of day (calls are made and cell towers are connected), and frequency of caller usage. In order to classify a legitimate user over a mobile network the thesis then validates this approach by implementing C4.5, RIPPER and SOM algorithms over MIT’s Reality Mining Dataset. The results support the proposed architecture and present accuracy rate as high as 96% for call logs and 94% for tower logs under training conditions

    Comparison of efficacy dimenhydrinate and metoclopramide in the treatment of nausea due to vertigo; a randomized study.

    BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the therapeutic efficacy of dimenhydrinate and metoclopramide in patients with nausea and vertigo. METHODS: A prospective, double-blind, randomized clinical trial was performed on patients who presented to the emergency department (ED) with nausea and vertigo in the six month period between Nov 1st 2012 and May 1st 2013. Adult patients who were 18 to 65 years old presenting to the ED with nausea and vertigo or motion sickness were included in the study. A total of 200 patients were divided into 2 groups who were admitted to ED with complaints of vertigo accompanied by nausea. In the first group, 50 mg dimenhydrinate and 10 mg metoclopramide infusions were given intravenously for 15 min. The efficacy of treatment was measured by using a 10 mm Visual Analog Scale (VAS) performed at 0, 15 and the 30th minute. The primary outcome variable was a reduction in vertigo intensity documented on the VAS at the 30th minute after medication administration. RESULTS: A total of 200 patients were included in the randomization (n=100 in both groups). The baseline vertigo VAS scores were 7.57±1.42 in the dimenhydrinate (DMT) group and 7.27±1.40 in the metoclopramide (MTP) group (p=0.09). In the 30th minute of treatment, the average vertigo VAS score was 2.46 ± 2.39 in the DMT group and 2.31±1.96 in the MTP group; no significant differences were detected between groups. The baseline nausea VAS scores were 7.62±1.48 in the DMT group and 7.45±1.27 in the MTP group (p=0.36). In the 30th minute of treatment the average vertigo VAS score decreased to 2.27±2.24 in the DMT group and 2.70±2.48 in the MTP group, no significant differences were detected between groups. No significant differences were detected between nausea VAS changes and vertigo VAS changes at 30th minutes of the treatment (p=0.06, p=0.85 respectively). Rescue medication need was similar in both treatment groups (p=0.94). No significant differences were detected about the side effects which are sedation (p=0.56) and hypotension (p=0.57). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, this prospective, double-blind, randomized study showed that both DMT and MTP have similar efficacy in reducing nausea and vertigo symptoms in the ED
