    The effect of reducing ATP levels on reorientation of the secondary palate

    The force for directing palate shelf reorientation appears to be associated with elements of the presumptive hard palate (Brinkley & Vickerman, 1979; Bulleit & Zimmerman, 1985). The palatal elements that mediate this process do not require palate cells to be metabolically active for expression of the force. This contention was demonstrated using an in vitro system that allows substantial reorientation of the hard palate to occur. ATP levels were reduced by treatment with metabolic inhibitors and the degree of reorientation was measured 1 h following pretreatment with inhibitors. Treatment of cultured embryonic heads under anoxic conditions with 2,4-dinitrophenol or KCN had noeffect on the degree of reorientation occurring in vitro. These agents reduced ATP levels by 71 % and 62 %, respectively. Treatment of cultured heads with 2-deoxy-D-glucose under anoxia also had no effect on reorientation. This treatment reduced ATP levels in embryonic heads by 92–94%. A similar reduction was observed if ATP levels were measured in palate tissue alone. The treatment of cultured heads with 2-deoxy-D-glucose and anoxia not only reduced levels of ATP but also reduced CTP, GTP and UTP. These results indicate that palate shelf reorientation is independent of cellular metabolic activity and supports the hypothesis that reorientation is dependent on a pre-existing infrastructure within the palate shelves

    Health requirements were developed as long range goals for future advanced coal extraction systems which would be introduced into the market in the year 2000. The goal of the requirements is that underground coal miners work in an environment that is as close as possible to the working conditions of the general population, that they do not exceed mortality and morbidity rates resulting from lung diseases that are comparable to those of the general population, and that their working conditions comply as closely as possible to those of other industries as specified by OSHA regulations. A brief technique for evaluating whether proposed advanced systems meet these safety requirements is presented, as well as a discussion of the costs of respiratory disability compensation

    The Telerobot Testbed is a hierarchically distributed processing system which is linked together through a standard, commercial Ethernet. Standard Ethernet systems are primarily designed to manage non-real-time information transfer. Therefore, collisions on the net (i.e., two or more sources attempting to send data at the same time) are managed by randomly rescheduling one of the sources to retransmit at a later time interval. Although acceptable for transmitting noncritical data such as mail, this particular feature is unacceptable for real-time hierarchical command and control systems such as the Telerobot. Data transfer and scheduling simulations, such as token ring, offer solutions to collision management, but do not appropriately characterize real-time data transfer/interactions for robotic systems. Therefore, models like these do not provide a viable simulation environment for understanding real-time network loading. A real-time network loading model is being developed which allows processor-to-processor interactions to be simulated, collisions (and respective probabilities) to be logged, collision-prone areas to be identified, and network control variable adjustments to be reentered as a means of examining and reducing collision-prone regimes that occur in the process of simulating a complete task sequence

    Escalator design features evaluation

    Escalators are available with design features such as dual speed (90 and 120 fpm), mat operation and flat steps. These design features were evaluated based on the impact of each on capital and operating costs, traffic flow, and safety. A human factors engineering model was developed to analyze the need for flat steps at various speeds. Mat operation of escalators was found to be cost effective in terms of energy savings. Dual speed operation of escalators with the higher speed used during peak hours allows for efficient operation. A minimum number of flat steps required as a function of escalator speed was developed to ensure safety for the elderly

    Mechanical properties of neat polymer matrix materials and their unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced composites

    The mechanical properties of two neat resin systems for use in carbon fiber epoxy composites were characterized. This included tensile and shear stiffness and strengths, coefficients of thermal and moisture expansion, and fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on specimens in the dry and moisture-saturated states, at temperatures of 23, 82 and 121 C. The neat resins tested were American Cyanamid 1806 and Union Carbide ERX-4901B(MPDA). Results were compared to previously tested neat resins. Four unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced composites were mechanically characterized. Axial and transverse tension and in-plane shear strengths and stiffness were measured, as well as transverse coefficients of thermal and moisture expansion. Tests were conducted on dry specimens only at 23 and 100 C. The materials tested were AS4/3502, AS6/5245-C, T300/BP907, and C6000/1806 unidirectional composites. Scanning electron microscopic examination of fracture surfaces was performed to permit the correlation of observed failure modes with the environmental test conditions

    System engineering techniques for establishing balanced design and performance guidelines for the advanced telerobotic testbed

    Novel system engineering techniques have been developed and applied to establishing structured design and performance objectives for the Telerobotics Testbed that reduce technical risk while still allowing the testbed to demonstrate an advancement in state-of-the-art robotic technologies. To estblish the appropriate tradeoff structure and balance of technology performance against technical risk, an analytical data base was developed which drew on: (1) automation/robot-technology availability projections, (2) typical or potential application mission task sets, (3) performance simulations, (4) project schedule constraints, and (5) project funding constraints. Design tradeoffs and configuration/performance iterations were conducted by comparing feasible technology/task set configurations against schedule/budget constraints as well as original program target technology objectives. The final system configuration, task set, and technology set reflected a balanced advancement in state-of-the-art robotic technologies, while meeting programmatic objectives and schedule/cost constraints

    Static tensile and tensile creep testing of five ceramic fibers at elevated temperature was performed. J.P. Stevens, Co., Astroquartz 9288 glass fiber, Nippon Carbon, Ltd., (Dow Corning) Nicalon NLM-102 silicon carbide fiber, and 3M Company Nextel 312, 380, and 480 alumina/silica/boria fibers were supplied in unsized tows. Single fibers were separated from the tows and tested in static tension and tensile creep. Elevated test temperatures ranged from 400 to 1300 C and varied for each fiber. Room temperature static tension was also performed. Computer software was written to reduce all single fiber test data into engineering constants using ASTM Standard Test Method D3379-75 as a reference. A high temperature furnace was designed and built to perform the single fiber elevated temperature testing up to 1300 C. A computerized single fiber creep apparatus was designed and constructed to perform four fiber creep tests simultaneously at temperatures up to 1300 C. Computer software was written to acquire and reduce all creep data

    Land cover maps for environmental modeling at multiple scales

    As described in the ECOCHANGE proposal, Task01.02.02 “Map production and aggregation”, two major products are generated within this WP. Firstly, land cover maps at high spatial resolutions will be produced for the European Union and for the reference years of 1960, 1990 and 2000. Secondly, thematic and spatial aggregated products will be derived at coarser spatial resolutions in order to synthesize the fragmentation and variability within coarser cells for biodiversity assessment and modelling. The name of the official deliverable is D01.02.01 “Land cover maps for environmental modelling at multiple scales” and includes this report, the digital land cover products and an interactive website to view the data at all thematic and spatial scales
