An Examination into Statistical Evaluations of Major League Baseball Coaches and Managers

    Get PDF
This exploration attempts to create statistical procedure capable of defining and comparing a Major League Baseball Manager’s performance in respect to player development. Using a supervised learning method of multiple linear regression, we examine how improvements or deterioration of certain player skills predict an increase in runs scored in a season. Major League Baseball teams (N = 30) over the span of eight seasons since the beginning of the Statcast era in 2015 were evaluated on their ability to improve their team’s batters’ patience in selecting hittable balls, or pitch selection, and quality of contact with the baseball, and graded on how their team’s variation predicts either runs scored, or additional, more traditional offensive metrics that already have well established statistics and research into their run predictiveness. Given the millions of dollars spent on team Manager contracts a year, much less the hundreds of millions spent on player assets said Manager is responsible for developing, more research and data is needed to create more understandable metrics and analytics to better judge a manager’s performance

Bi-Lipschitz arcs in metric spaces with controlled geometry

We generalize a bi-Lipschitz extension result of David and Semmes from Euclidean spaces to complete metric measure spaces with controlled geometry (Ahlfors regularity and supporting a Poincar\'e inequality). In particular, we find sharp conditions on metric measure spaces XX so that any bi-Lipschitz embedding of a subset of the real line into XX extends to a bi-Lipschitz embedding of the whole line. Along the way, we prove that if the complement of an open subset YY of XX has small Assouad dimension, then it is a uniform domain. Finally, we prove a quantitative approximation of continua in XX by bi-Lipschitz curves.Comment: 28 page

New York City Panel on Climate Change 2019 Report Chapter 8: Indicators and Monitoring

    Get PDF
The Indicators and Monitoring chapter of the first New York City Panel on Climate Change Report began with the paradigm: What cannot be measured cannot be managed (Rosenzweig et al., 2010). This statement is as valid today as it was then. The NPCC1 (2010) Indicators and Monitoring chapter addressed the need for assembling a suite of indicators to monitor climate change and adaptation in order to inform climate change decision making. It outlined criteria for selection of indicators (policy relevance, analytic soundness, measurability), defined categories of indicators (physical climate change; risk exposure, vulnerability, and impacts; adaptation; new research), and provided examples of specific indicators. Table 8.1 is a summary table of indicator development contribution from the NPCC1 I&M chapter (Jacob et al., 2011). The chapter explored the institutional requirements for indicator data availability, continuity, archiving, and public accessibility

Large Scale Composite Manufacturing for Heavy Lift Launch Vehicles

    Get PDF
Risk reduction for the large scale composite manufacturing is an important goal to produce light weight components for heavy lift launch vehicles. NASA and an industry team successfully employed a building block approach using low-cost Automated Tape Layup (ATL) of autoclave and Out-of-Autoclave (OoA) prepregs. Several large, curved sandwich panels were fabricated at HITCO Carbon Composites. The aluminum honeycomb core sandwich panels are segments of a 1/16th arc from a 10 meter cylindrical barrel. Lessons learned highlight the manufacturing challenges required to produce light weight composite structures such as fairings for heavy lift launch vehicles
