    Strong-Weak Chern-Simons-Matter Dualities from a Lattice Construction

We provide a lattice demonstration of (2+1)(2+1)-dimensional field theory dualities relating free Dirac or Majorana fermions to strongly-interacting bosonic Chern-Simons-matter theories. Specifically, we prove the recent conjecture that U(N)U(N) level-1 with NfN_f gauged complex Wilson-Fisher scalars (where 1≤Nf≤N1\le N_f\le N) is dual to NfN_f Dirac fermions, as well as the analogous conjecture relating SO(N)SO(N) theories with real Wilson-Fisher scalars to Majorana fermions for 1≤Nf≤N−21\le N_f\le N-2. Furthermore, we discover new dualities that allow us to explain the interesting phase structure of the SO(N)SO(N) theories with N−1N-1 and NN scalars, for all N≥2N\ge 2.Comment: 35 pages. v2: updated a citation. v3: minor correctio

No more walls! A tale of modularity, symmetry, and wall crossing for 1/4 BPS dyons

Abstract We determine the generating functions of 1/4 BPS dyons in a class of 4d N N \mathcal{N} = 4 string vacua arising as CHL orbifolds of K3 × T 2, a classification of which has been recently completed. We show that all such generating functions obey some simple physical consistency conditions that are very often sufficient to fix them uniquely. The main constraint we impose is the absence of unphysical walls of marginal stability: discontinuities of 1/4 BPS degeneracies can only occur when 1/4 BPS dyons decay into pairs of 1/2 BPS states. Formally, these generating functions in spacetime can be described as multiplicative lifts of certain supersymmetric indices (twining genera) on the worldsheet of the corresponding nonlinear sigma model on K3. As a consequence, our procedure also leads to an explicit derivation of almost all of these twining genera. The worldsheet indices singled out in this way match precisely a set of functions of interest in moonshine, as predicted by a recent conjecture

A TARGET MOTAD ANALYSIS OF A CROP AND LIVESTOCK FARM IN JEFFERSON COUNTY, FLORIDA

An analysis of a typical crop and livestock farm in North Florida is presented. The analysis incorporates the potential competition and complementarity among crop and beef cattle enterprises. A Target MOTAD model is developed to account for risk in a decision framework. The results indicate that when income risk is ignored, peanuts, watermelon, and stocker cattle are the only enterprises included in the optimal solution. When income risk is heavily weighted, the optimal solution includes peanuts, watermelon, stocker cattle, cow-calf, and irrigated soybeans. The results suggest that the persistence of cow-calf production may be explained as a stabilizer of income.Farm Management,

Unintended Pregnancy And Induced Abortion In Mexico: Causes and Consequences

    Get PDF
Examining the hidden and stigmatized practice of induced abortion is very hard to do. Throughout the Mexican Republic's 31 states, induced abortion is highly restricted. (The exception is the capital, the Federal District, which decriminalized first-trimester abortions in 2007.) This report presents estimates of induced abortion for 2009, by the country's 32 entidades federativas (or federative entities) and by the woman's age. The report also examines what causes women to resort to abortion in the first place -- unintended pregnancy

A Life In My Hands. By Jacob W. Ehrlich

There is always a fascination in watching anything done terribly well. As a criminal lawyer and as a champion of his clients in civil or criminal matters, Ehrlich has few equals. The many stories that make up this book are well and colorfully told, and the reviewer found the reading of this book and enjoyable experience

Health care professionals and adolescent vaccination. A call for intervention research

    Get PDF
In their recently published research study, Gargano et al. found that a physician's recommendation and parental health beliefs had significant effects on adolescent vaccination rates and on parental intentions to vaccinate. This research replicates the findings of a number of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine-focused research studies, but explores new territory by focusing on all recommended adolescent vaccines: meningococcal-conjugate (MCV4), HPV, influenza, and tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccines. Although Gargano et al.'s study is relatively small in scale and focuses on only one county in Georgia, their results are consistent with many other research reports, suggesting that their findings are robust and replicable. Most published intervention studies have targeted parents and young adults, with little focus on health care professionals. However, given the centrality of physician recommendation in adolescent vaccination, as shown by Gargano et al., it is clear that the time has come to develop and evaluate interventions that help physicians and other health care professionals to more effectively implement strong and routine recommendations for all adolescent platform vaccines
