    Features of reproduction and assisted reproduction in the white (Ceratotherium simum) and black (Diceros bicornis) rhinoceros

    Despite the worldwide increase of rhinoceros calf numbers, the growth of the population of white and black rhinoceros is slowing down mainly due to anthropogenic causes, such as poaching and habitat loss. Assisted reproduction is one of the methods of preserving the valuable genomes of these animals from being lost, and assists in breeding them in captivity to maintain the specie(s) numbers and provide an option for possible reintroduction into the wild. Since wild rhinoceros are difficult to handle and examine clinically, most of the current information available on their reproductive characteristics has been gained from captive rhinoceros populations. Nevertheless, very little is known about rhinoceros reproduction. Since the rhinoceros belongs to the odd-toed ungulates (Perissodactyls) group, like the horse and the tapir, the horse has been proposed as a suitable model to study reproduction and artificial reproductive techniques in the rhinoceros. In this review, the current knowledge of the reproduction of the rhinoceros is summarized

    The predictive value of bank fair values

    Fair value, the value of an item in an orderly exchange, has been shown to have greater value relevance than historical cost. However, there is limited literature on the predictive ability of fair value. Our study contributes to this emerging area of research by examining the predictive ability of the SFAS 107 fair value disclosures by U.S. banks for future performance as measured by operating cash flows and earnings over a three-year time horizon. Furthermore, we provide evidence on the influence of the 2007/2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC) on the relationships between bank fair values and future performance, thereby showing whether market illiquidity affected the underlying relationships. We also test for the impact of bank characteristics - size, capital adequacy and growth prospects - on predictive ability. Our findings suggest that fair values have predictive ability for both the cash flow and earnings measures of performance and that the GFC did not have an adverse impact on the predictive ability of bank fair values. However, we find that the predictive ability of fair value is strongest for operating cash flows. The study supports the relevance of fair value, as indicated by predictive ability for performance, and thus makes an important contribution to the fair value accounting literature and accounting standard-settingfalsePublishe

    Reliability and reproducibility of perfusion MRI in cognitively normal subjects

    Arterial spin labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is becoming a popular method for measuring perfusion due to its ability of generating perfusion maps noninvasively. This allows for frequent repeat scanning, which is especially useful for follow-up studies. However, limited information is available regarding the reliability and reproducibility of ASL perfusion measurements. Here, the reliability and reproducibility of pulsed ASL was investigated in an elderly population to determine the variation in perfusion among cognitively normal individuals in different brain structures. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and within-subject variation coefficients (wsCV) were used to estimate reliability and reproducibility over a period of 1 year. Twelve cognitively normal subjects (75.5±5.3 years old, six male and six female) were scanned four times (at 0, 3, 6 and 12 months). No significant difference in cerebral blood flow (CBF) was found over this period. CBF values ranged from 46 to 53 ml/100 g per minute in the medial frontal gyrus (MFG) and from 40 to 44 ml/100 g per minute over all gray matter regions in the superior part of the brain. Data obtained from the first two scans were processed by two readers and showed high reliability (ICC >0.97) and reproducibility (wsCV <6%). However, over the total period of 1 year, reliability reduced to a moderate level (ICC=0.63-0.74) with wsCVs of gray matter, left MFG, right MFG of 13.5%, 12.3%, and 15.4%, respectively. In conclusion, measurement of CBF with pulsed ASL provided good agreement between inter-raters. A moderate level of reliability was obtained over a 1-year period, which was attributed to variance in slice positioning and coregistration.     The presence of depression and anxiety do not distinguish between functional jerks and cortical myoclonus

    INTRODUCTION: Functional movement disorders are accompanied by a high occurrence of psychopathology and cause serious impairments in quality of life. However, little is known about this in patients with functional jerks and no comparison has been made between patients with functional jerks and organic myoclonus. This case control study compares the occurrence of depression, anxiety and quality of life (HR-QoL) in patients with functional jerks and cortical myoclonus. METHODS: Patients with functional jerks and cortical myoclonus, consecutively recruited, were compared on self-rated anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory), depression (Beck Depression Inventory), health-related quality of life (RAND-36), and myoclonus severity (UMRS and CGI-S rating scales). RESULTS: Sixteen patients with functional jerks and 23 with cortical myoclonus were evaluated. There was no significant difference in depression (44% vs. 43%) or anxiety (44% vs. 47%) scores between groups. The HR-QoL was similarly impaired except that functional jerks patients reported significantly more pain (p < 0.05). Only in the functional jerks group myoclonus severity correlated with depression and anxiety. CONCLUSION: Depression and anxiety scores are high and do not discriminate between functional jerks and cortical myoclonus. Quality of life was equally impaired in both sub-groups, but pain was significantly worse in patients with functional jerks
