Comment on "Transverse Force on a Quantized Vortex in a Superfluid"
The result of Thouless, Ao and Niu (TAN), that the mutual friction parameter
, contradicts to the experiments made in rotating 3He-B by
Manchester group. The Manchester group observed that at low
temperature and approaches 1 at high temperature. The reason of the
contradiction is that TAN did not take into account the Iordanskii force on the
vortex and the spectral flow force, which comes from the anomaly related to the
low-energy bound states of fermions in cores of quantized vortices. The
Iordanskii force is responsible for the negative at low
temperature, while due to the spectral flow approaches 1 at high
temperature. Relation of the spectral flow anomaly with the paradoxes of the

and incoherent quasiparticles for the phase diagram of .
The two staggered superconducting states live at the Brillouin zone center and
the zone boundary, and coexist for temperatures at concentrations
. We predict below
appearance of a charge density wave (CDW) and Be-sublattice distortion. The
distortion explains the SR relaxation anomaly, and Th-impurity mediated

Anomalous flux pinning in a torus of thoriated UBe_(13)
We compare the local magnetization at a spatial singularity of superconducting U_(0.97)Th_(0.03)Be_(13) for different magnetic field histories. We find a reduction in the zero-field-cooled vortex flow relative to the field-cooled case, marked by a sharp onset coincident in temperature with the second (lower-temperature) transition in the specific heat. This effect is peculiar to the flux threading the hole of the torus, to (U,Th)Be_(13) samples with multiple superconducting transitions, and to the lower superconducting state with broken time-reversal invariance
Quantum vortices in systems obeying a generalized exclusion principle
The paper deals with a planar particle system obeying a generalized exclusion
principle (EP) and governed, in the mean field approximation, by a nonlinear
Schroedinger equation. We show that the EP involves a mathematically simple and
physically transparent mechanism, which allows the genesis of quantum vortices
in the system. We obtain in a closed form the shape of the vortices and
investigate its main physical properties.

Quantization of Superflow Circulation and Magnetic Flux with a Tunable Offset
Quantization of superflow-circulation and of magnetic-flux are considered for
systems, such as superfluid He-A and unconventional superconductors, having
nonscalar order parameters. The circulation is shown to be the anholonomy in
the parallel transport of the order parameter. For multiply-connected samples
free of distributed vorticity, circulation and flux are predicted to be
quantized, but generically to nonintegral values that are tunably offset from
integers. This amounts to a version of Aharonov-Bohm physics. Experimental

Vortex avalanches at one thousandth the superconducting transition temperature
We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of vortex motion at millikelvin temperatures in untwinned single crystals of YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-δ). Above threshold fields of many tesla, flux jumps appear in the magnetic hysteresis B(H). These jumps correspond to a change of 750 vortices, on average, under our micrometer-sized Bi Hall probes. Not only are the threshold fields large, but they, and the characteristics of the flux jumps themselves, are essentially independent of magnet ramp rate or sample thickness, militating against a thermally triggered instability. Moreover, the threshold differs significantly on the ascending and descending branches of the hysteresis loop. We argue for a dynamical origin for these vortex avalanches and invoke a sandpile analogy to guide our detailed explorations of the H-T plane
Electron-Assisted Hopping in Two Dimensions
We have studied the non-ohmic effects in the conductivity of a
two-dimensional system which undergoes the crossover from weak to strong
localization with decreasing electron concentration. When the electrons are
removed from equilibrium with phonons, the hopping conductivity depends only on
the electron temperature. This indicates that the hopping transport in a system
with a large localization length is assisted by electron-electron interactions

Effect of ranitidine on acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in dogs
The effect of ranitidine administration upon the hepatotoxic effect produced by a multidose acetaminophen administration regimen was examined. Seventy-two dogs received three subcutaneous injections of acetaminophen (750, 200, 200 mg/kg body wt) in DMSO (600 mg/ml) at time zero, 9 hr later, and 24 hr after the first dose. Ten control animals (group I) were not given ranitidine, the remaining 62 dogs received an intramus-cular injection of ranitidine 30 min before each acetaminophen dose. Three different doses of ranitidine were used (mg/kg body wt): 50 mg, group II (33 dogs); 75 mg, group III (14 dogs); 120 mg, group IV (15 dogs). Ranitidine reduced the expected acetaminophen-induced hepatoxicity in a dose-response manner. Moreover, a significant correlation was found between the ranitidine dose and the survival rate, as evidenced by transaminase levels in the serum and histology of the liver. This model of fulminant hepatic failure induced by acetaminophen and its modulation with ranitidine provides clinical investigators with a research tool that will be useful in the future investigation of putative medical and surgical therapies being investigated for use in the clinical management of fulminant hepatic failure. Because of the size of the animal used in this model, frequent and serial analyses of blood and liver were available for study to determine the effect of therapy within a given animal as opposed to within groups of animals. © 1990 Plenum Publishing Corporation
Invertebrate 7SK snRNAs
7SK RNA is a highly abundant noncoding RNA in mammalian cells whose function in transcriptional regulation has only recently been elucidated. Despite its highly conserved sequence throughout vertebrates, all attempts to discover 7SK RNA homologues in invertebrate species have failed so far. Here we report on a combined experimental and computational survey that succeeded in discovering 7SK RNAs in most of the major deuterostome clades and in two protostome phyla: mollusks and annelids. Despite major efforts, no candidates were found in any of the many available ecdysozoan genomes, however. The additional sequence data confirm the evolutionary conservation and hence functional importance of the previously described 3′ and 5′ stem-loop motifs, and provide evidence for a third, structurally well-conserved domain
