    An objective method to associate local weather extremes with characteristic circulation structures

    In this paper we give methods to find characteristic circulation patterns which are connected to local extreme temperature anomalies. Two data reduction techniques are applied: Legendre polynomial fitting and watershedding. For polynomial fitting a clear trend is found with respect to local temperatures. However, the trend is not distinctive enough to give clear answers on the type of circulation patterns belonging to local extremes. The main advantage of watershedding is that the physical properties of the circulation patterns are retained while the dimension of the data is largely reduced. Expert knowledge, however, is needed to model these main features as predictors

    First results of the OROMA experiment in the Lister Tief of the German Bight in the North Sea, EARSeL Proceedings

    The objective of the project entitled “Operational Radar and Optical Mapping in monitoring hydrodynamic, morphodynamic and environmental parameters for coastal management (OROMA)” within the Fifth Framework Programme of the European Commission (EC) is to improve the effectiveness of monitoring technologies in coastal waters. The Research Vessel (R.V.) Ludwig Prandtl of the GKSS research centre was equipped with special sensors and instruments to measure the position of the ship, the water depth, the salinity, the water temperature, the current speed and direction, the modulation characteristics of short-wave energies, and relevant air-sea interaction parameters due to the presence of submarine sand waves. The first experiment of the OROMA project on 5-16 August 2002 took place in the Lister Tief, a tidal inlet of the German Bight in the North Sea. The seabed morphology of the Lister Tief reveals a complex configuration of different bedforms which is four-dimensional in space and time. A significant upward orientated component uvert of the three-dimensional current velocity field was observed. Marked vertically so-called waterspouts of uvert above the crests of sand waves have been measured by the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) as straight lines. They cause water upwelling with turbulence patterns at the water surface affecting the Normalized Radar Cross Section (NRCS) modulation. A first impression of expected NRCS modulation signatures of sea bottom topography detected by the GKSS shipborne X-band radar are presented as an uncalibrated composite of five single sea clutter images acquired in the Lister Tief on 22 November 1990

    Screening for Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes With Proposed A1C-Based Diagnostic Criteria

    OBJECTIVE — An International Expert Committee (IEC) and the American Diabetes Asso-ciation (ADA) proposed diagnostic criteria for diabetes and pre-diabetes based on A1C levels. We hypothesized that screening for diabetes and pre-diabetes with A1C measurements would differ from using oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS — We compared pre-diabetes, dysglycemia (diabetes or pre-diabetes), and diabetes identified by the proposed criteria (A1C 6.5 % for diabetes and 6.0–6.4 % [IEC] or 5.7–6.4 % [ADA] for high risk/pre-diabetes) with standard OGTT diagnoses in three datasets. Non-Hispanic white or black adults without known diabetes who had A1C and 75-g OGTT measurements were included from the prospective Screening for Impaired Glucose Tolerance study (n 1,581), and from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III (n 2014), and NHANES 2005–2006 (n 1,111). RESULTS — OGTTs revealed pre-diabetes in 35.8 % and diabetes in 5.2 % of combined study subjects. A1C provided receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve areas for diabetes of 0.79– 0.83, but ROC curve areas were 0.70 for dysglycemia or pre-diabetes.     Mindful awareness as a mechanism of change for natural childbirth in pregnant women with high fear of childbirth: a randomised controlled trial

    BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-Based Childbirth and Parenting (MBCP) is effective in increasing natural childbirth in pregnant women with high fear of childbirth (FOC) as compared to enhanced care as usual (ECAU). We aimed to examine through which pathway of action MBCP reaches this effect, based on a model of approaching or avoiding the challenges related to childbirth. METHODS: One hundred eleven pregnant women with high FOC were measured pre- and post-intervention on FOC (emotion pathway), catastrophic beliefs about labour pain (cognition pathway) and mindful awareness (attention pathway). A multiple mediation model was used to examine through which pathway the mechanism of change operated in relation to approach (i.e., natural childbirth) versus avoidance (i.e., self-requested caesarean section). RESULTS: It was found that greater mindful awareness (18% R(2) = 0.18, F[1107] = 22.77, p < 0.0001) was the only significant mechanism of change operating through the attentional pathway leading to natural childbirth. More specifically, nonreactivity to inner experience (a facet of mindful awareness) showed to be the strongest mechanism of change. More extensive meditation practice was positively associated with natural childbirth; however, the number of completed MBCP sessions was not associated with the outcome. CONCLUSIONS: An increase in mindful awareness was the strongest mechanism of change for better adaptation to the challenges of childbirth. Decreases in neither FOC nor catastrophic beliefs about labour pain were identified as mechanisms of change. Additionally, the more one meditated, the more one was inclined towards a natural childbirth. MBCP enhances adaptation to the challenges of childbirth and less use of obstetric interventions in the presence of high FOC. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The Netherlands Trial Register (NTR; 4302).     Magnetic anisotropy and crystalline texture in BaO(Fe2O3)(6) thin films deposited on GaN/Al2O3

    BaO(Fe2O3)6 (BaM) thin films were deposited by pulsed laser deposition on GaN∕Al2O3 substrates. A pole figure obtained from the (006) reflection indicated that ∼81% of the film volume had the c axis tilted less than 5° from the film normal. A low anisotropy field was inferred from vector coil vibrating sample magnetometer (VVSM) measurements. The reduction in Hafrom literature values and a two-step switching of the easy axis magnetization is postulated to result from interdiffusion and misalignment effects. To alleviate interdiffusion and to improve the c-axis alignment, experiments were repeated with lower deposition temperatures, thinner films, and MgO buffer layers. The features of the hysteresis loop due to two-step switching and the in-plane coercivity were reduced while the anisotropy field (Ha) was larger. Films deposited with MgO buffer layers are observed to have single-step switching of the easy axis magnetization, larger anisotropy fields, and sharp ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) peaks. Films with MgO buffer layers were determined to have anisotropy fields Ha=1.57T by FMR and Ha∼1.5–1.6Tas determined from the difference in the saturation fields for the easy and hard axis loops

This implies the exponential decay, in space and in time, of the correlation functions of the invariant measures
