    Velocity Fields of Spiral Galaxies in z~0.5 Clusters

    Spiral galaxies can be affected by interactions in clusters, that also may distort the internal velocity field. If unrecognized from single-slit spectroscopy, this could lead to a wrong determination of the maximum rotation velocity as pointed out by Ziegler et al. (2003). This parameter directly enters into the Tully-Fisher relation, an important tool to investigate the evolution of spiral galaxies. To overcome this problem, we measure the 2D-velocity fields by observing three different slit positions per galaxy using FORS2 at the VLT providing us with full coverage of each galaxy and an adequate spatial resolution. The kinematic properties are compared to structural features determined on the HST/ACS images to assess possible interaction processes. As a next step, the whole analysis will be performed for three more clusters, so that we will be able to establish a high-accuracy TFR for spirals at z~0.5.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, going to be published in the proceedings of the IAU Symp. 241, "Stellar Populations as Building Blocks of Galaxies

    Effect of reduction of strategic Columbium addition in 718 Alloy on the structure and properties

    A series of alloys was developed having a base composition similar to Inconel 718, with reduced Cb levels of 3.00 and 1.10 wt% Cb. Substitutions of 3.0% W, 3.0W + 0.9V or Mo increased from 3.0% to 5.8% were made for the Cb in these alloys. Two additional alloys, one containing 3.49% Cb and 1.10% Ti and another containing 3.89% Cb and 1.29% Ti were also studied. Tensile properties at rooom and elevated temperatures, stress-rupture tests, and an analysis of extracted phases were carried out for each of the alloys. Additions of solid solution elements to a reduced Cb alloy had no significant effect on the properties of the alloys under either process condition. The solution and age alloys with substitutions of 1.27% i at 3.89% Cb had tensile properties similar top hose of the original alloy and stress-rupture properties superior to the original alloy. The improved stress-rupture properties were the result of significant precipitation of Ni3Ti-gamma prime in the alloy, which is more stable than gamma' at the elevated temperatures. At lower temperatures, the new alloy benefits from gamma' strengthening. With more precise control and proper processing, the reduced Cb direct-age alloy could substitute for Alloy 718 in high strength applications

    By means of layer resolved ion irradiation the mechanisms involved in the irradiation driven modifications of the exchange bias effect in NiFe/FeMn bilayers have been investigated. It is shown that not only the locations of the defects but also the magnetic coupling between both layers during the irradiation process is of crucial importance.     FOXP3 interacts with hnRNPF to modulate pre-mRNA alternative splicing

    FOXP3 promotes the development and function of regulatory T cells mainly through regulating the transcription of target genes. RNA alternative splicing has been implicated in a wide range of physiological and pathophysiological processes. We report here that FOXP3 associates with heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) F through the exon 2-encoded region of FOXP3 and the second quasi-RNA recognition motif (qRRM) of hnRNPF. FOXP3 represses the ability of hnRNPF to bind to its target pre-mRNA and thus modulates RNA alternative splicing. Furthermore, overexpression of mouse hnRNPF in in vitro-differentiated regulatory T cells (Tregs) reduced their suppressive function. Thus, our studies identify a novel mechanism by which FOXP3 regulates mRNA alternative splicing to modulate the function of regulatory T cells

    Prospects for Measuring Δg\Delta g from Jets at HERA with Polarized Protons

    The measurement of the polarized gluon distribution function Δg(x)\Delta g(x) from photon gluon fusion processes in electron proton deep inelastic scattering producing two jets has been investigated. The study is based on the MEPJET simulation program. The size of the expected spin asymmetry and corresponding statistical uncertainties for a possible measurement with polarized beams of electrons and protons at HERA have been estimated.     Directional Detection of Dark Matter with MIMAC

    Directional detection is a promising search strategy to discover galactic Dark Matter. We present a Bayesian analysis framework dedicated to Dark Matter phenomenology using directional detection. The interest of directional detection as a powerful tool to set exclusion limits, to authentify a Dark Matter detection or to constrain the Dark Matter properties, both from particle physics and galactic halo physics, will be demonstrated. However, such results need highly accurate track reconstruction which should be reachable by the MIMAC detector using a dedicated readout combined with a likelihood analysis of recoiling nuclei.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the TAUP 2011 conference held in Munich (5 - 9 September, 2011
