For the first time in its history of 120 years the university library of the „Technische UniversitĂ€t Berlin" will receive a new building which will both be functional and purpose built. The library will now be able to serve the needs of the digital age as well as provide up to date working conditions and improved services for its users and staff in new appropriate surroundings. To achieve this aim organisational and financial problems had to be overcome and a partner like the university library of the „UniversitĂ€t der KĂŒnste " had to be found. More than three million items will be housed in this five storied building, ft will also possess some very innovative solutions for library and domestic techniques

Intolerance, Predjudice and Discrimination. A European Report

    Get PDF
This report is the very first to supply comprehensive and comparable data about the extent of prejudice and discrimination against the main target groups in eight selected European countries. This representative data, based on the findings of a research project on group-focused enmity in Europe (GFE Europe) initiated by the University of Bielefeld, allows us to analyse the differences between countries and discover what they have in common. The objective of this publication is to make the findings and data available to the international research community in an accessible and manageable form, and above all to stimulate social and political discussion. Accordingly, the focus is on advancing the political discussion about prejudice and discrimination rather than on the complexities of theory. If Europe wishes to know whether prejudices, stereotypes and discriminatory mentalities in individual member states are endangering or even corroding democracy then the findings of the present publication supply an alarming wake-up call. We hope that our data and analyses will invigorate the European discussion and supply empirical evidence that has hitherto been sorely lacking

An evaluation of an intercultural training event for police officers. The training event was developed by the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne with the aim of teaching the competence to successfully shape intercultural interactions. The authors were commissioned to evaluate the training with a minimal budget and without interfering in the training. Three evaluation units were conducted. First, we evaluated debriefing sessions concerning the expectations and experiences. Second, we asked two hundred former participants about the relevance of intercultural competence and about how successfully it had been taught. Third, a new form of evaluation was implemented. Participants of the training event and two control groups watched a film with a typical everyday situation and were asked about their interpretation of the situation. All three units showed an improvement of intercultural competences. However, the problem of turning general cultural competence into daily routine seems to remain
