    Epimedium brevicornu Maxim extract shows protective activity against Alzheimer's disease in mice

    Purpose: To investigate the protective effect of Epimedium brevicornu Maxim extract (EBME) against Alzheimer's disease in 3xTg-AD mice. Methods: The cognitive function of 3xTg-AD mice was assessed using Morris water maze test. The levels of amyloid beta deposits and NeuN in the mouse hippocampus were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Brain neurotrophic-derived factor (BDNF) and tyrosine kinase B (TrkB) expressions were examined by western blot analysis. Results: EBME treatment significantly ameliorated learning and memory deficits in AD mice, as shown by the increased time spent in the target zone during probe tests. Compared with the 3xTg-AD mice (8.4 ± 1.1 s), the escape latency in animals treated with 600 mg/kg EBME (21.5 ± 1.1 s) was significantly increased (p < 0.01). In addition, EBME significantly decreased Aβ deposits, increased NeuN-positive cells, and upregulated the expressions of BDNF (1.5 ± 0.2, p < 0.05) and TrkB (1.6 ± 0.2, p < 0.05) in the 3xTg AD mice. Conclusion: EBME treatment may be a useful therapeutic strategy for managing memory impairment

    Mobile defects as mediated states for charge-carrier trapping in metal halide perovskites quantum dots

    The migration motion of defects in metal halide perovskites quantum dots (MHPQDs) results in charge-carrier trapping become more complicated. We study two-step trapping mediated by mobile defects between the ground state of MHPQDs and a fixed-depth defect using a full-configuration defect method, where all possible trapping processes mediated by these mobile defects could be reproduced and the fastest channels among them are picked out. We find that these two-step trapping processes could keep more one order of magnitude faster than these direct ones as mobile defect with the appropriate localization strength, which implies that these indirect trapping should play the crucial rule to determine the non-radiative recombination losses. These results provide the significant explanation for studying non-radiation processes of carriers in the presence of the migration defects in recent experiments. Moreover, this model will be available to analyze some key performance related defects in electronic devices.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Microscopic theory of Raman scattering for the rotational organic cation in metal halide perovskites

    A gap exists in microscopic understanding the dynamic properties of the rotational organic cation (ROC) in the inorganic framework of the metal halide perovskites (MHP) to date. Herein, we develop a microscopic theory of Raman scattering for the ROC in MHP based on the angular momentum of a ROC exchanging with that of the photon and phonon. We systematically present the selection rules for the angular momentum transfer among three lowest rotational levels. We find that the phonon angular momentum that arising from the inorganic framework and its specific values could be directly manifested by Stokes (or anti-Stokes) shift. Moreover, the initial orientation of the ROC and its preferentially rotational directions could be judged in Raman spectra. This study lays the theoretical foundation for the high-precision resolution and manipulation of molecular rotation immersed in many-body environment by Raman technique

    The Effect of Baduanjin on Promoting the Physical Fitness and Health of Adults

    The purpose of study was to assess the efficacy of a 16-week Baduanjin qigong training intervention in promoting physical fitness and health for adults. An experimental design was adopted, and subjects were assigned randomly into an experimental group ( = 55) and a control group ( = 55). In the intervention group comprised of adults, there were no significant variations in blood glucose, blood lipid, blood pressure, heart rate variability, and vital capacity indices. The body weight and body mass index (BMI) dropped in the intervention group. Compared with the control group, the skinfold thicknesses decreased at lower corner of scapula, triceps brachii, and abdomen, with a statistical significance ( < 0.001; = 0.005; = 0.003). By comparing the physical fitness indices, it was found that the increase of the results of sit-and-reach test in the intervention group had statistical significance ( = 0.001). In conclusion, it was found by our trial that Baduanjin exercise could significantly improve the physical flexibility and subcutaneous adipose accumulation in the healthy adults

    ARISTOLOCHIA BRACTEOLATE RETZ. ATTENUATES HYPERURICEMIA IN A METABOLIC ARTHRITIS RAT MODEL

    Background: The leaves of Aristolochia bracteolata Retz. has been documented in the folk medicine literature for its anti-arthritic activity. The target of the research envisaged was to elucidate the activity of A. bracteolata extract on hyperuricemic condition in arthritis rat model. Materials and Methods: Dried and powdered plant leaves were extracted using ether and chloroform. Potassium oxonate was injected intra-articularly to produce arthritis. The hyperuricemic effect, of A. bracteolate was analyzed by studying levels of uric acid in serum as well as in urine of arthritis induced rats. Effects of plant extracts were also studied on BUN (blood urea nitrogen) levels and fraction of uric acid excreted. Results: Results indicate that administration of A. bracteolata presented substantial change in uric acid concentration, augmented by potassium oxonate administration in rats. The reduction in levels of uric acid levels was nearly same as allopurinol. The investigation also revealed that the primary plant extract has nephroprotective effect by enhancing the production of Prostaglandin E2 and Interleukin-1. Histological studies of rat kidney slices indicated the safety of the present plant extract. Conclusion: The crude extract of A. bracteolate can be used to reduce hyperuricemia in metabolic arthritis produced in rat model, without inducing any potential damaging effects

    Major adverse cardiovascular events associated with testosterone treatment: a pharmacovigilance study of the FAERS database

    Background and purpose: Testosterone is an essential sex hormone in maintaining masculine characteristics, which is prescribed for male hypogonadism as testosterone replacement treatment (TRT). Herein, we investigated long-standing controversies about the association between TRT and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), based on real world adverse event (AE) reports, registered in the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS).Methods: Publicly available FAERS data from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2022 were retrieved from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website. The data mining protocol including the reporting odds ratio (ROR) and the Bayesian confidence propagation neural network (BCPNN) was applied to analyze overreporting caused by risk factors and MACEs, including TRT, morbidities, and ages. The ROR and the BCPNN were also applied to investigate the annually developing trend of pharmacovigilance (PV) signals in the real world, retrospectively.Results: A total of 3,057 cases referring to MACEs, with a median age of 57 years old (yo), were identified from 28,921 cases of testosterone users. MACEs related to PV signals have emerged since 2014, including cardiac death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and non-fatal stroke. Myocardial infarction (MI) (ROR: 9.46; IC025: 3.08), acute myocardial infarction (AMI) (ROR: 16.20; IC025: 3.72), ischemic cardiomyopathy (ROR: 11.63; IC025: 2.20), and cardiomyopathy (ROR: 5.98; IC025: 1.96) were the most significant signals generated, and weaker signals included cardiac failure acute (ROR: 4.01; IC025: 0.71), cardiac arrest (ROR: 1.88; IC025: 0.56), and ventricular fibrillation (VF) (ROR: 2.38; IC025: 0.38). The time-to-onset (TTO) of MACEs was calculated with a median of 246 days for AMI.Conclusion: For myocardial infarction and cardiomyopathy, TRT statistically tended to increase the risk of MACEs, while for cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac failure, and stroke, TRT demonstrated beneficial effects among the population with morbidities, such as testosterone deficiency (TD), diabetes mellitus (DM), and hypertension. MACEs were rare but led to serious outcomes including significant increase in death and disability. Since 2018, and before 2014, reports referring to TRT associated with MACEs were relatively scarce, which indicated that there might be a considerable number of cases that went unrecorded, due to neglection. Health workers and testosterone users might pay more attention to testosterone-induced MACEs
