Digital Eversion of a Hollow Structure: An Application in Virtual Colonography
A new methodology is presented for digital eversion of a hollow structure. The digital eversion is advantageous for better visualization of a larger portion of the inner surface with preservation of geometric relationship and without time-consuming navigation. Together with other techniques, digital eversion may help improve screening, diagnosis, surgical planning, and medical education. Two eversion algorithms are proposed and evaluated in numerical simulation to demonstrate the feasibility of the approach
Vibrational Properties of One-Dimensional Disordered Hyperuniform Atomic Chains
Disorder hyperuniformity (DHU) is a recently discovered exotic state of
many-body systems that possess a hidden order in between that of a perfect
crystal and a completely disordered system. Recently, this novel DHU state has
been observed in a number of quantum materials including amorphous 2D graphene
and silica, which are endowed with unexpected electronic transport properties.
Here, we numerically investigate 1D atomic chain models, including perfect
crystalline, disordered hyperuniform as well as randomly perturbed atom packing
configurations to obtain a quantitative understanding of how the unique DHU
disorder affects the vibrational properties of these low-dimensional materials.
We find that the DHU chains possess lower cohesive energies compared to the
randomly perturbed chains, implying their potential reliability in experiments.
Our inverse partition ratio (IPR) calculations indicate that the DHU chains can
support fully delocalized states just like perfect crystalline chains over a
wide range of frequencies, i.e., cm, suggesting
superior phonon transport behaviors within these frequencies, which was
traditionally considered impossible in disordered systems. Interestingly, we
observe the emergence of a group of highly localized states associated with
cm, which is characterized by a significant peak in
the IPR and a peak in phonon density of states at the corresponding frequency,
and is potentially useful for decoupling electron and phonon degrees of
freedom. These unique properties of DHU chains have implications in the design
and engineering of novel DHU quantum materials for thermal and phononic
applications.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Soil characteristics and microbial responses in post-mine reclamation areas in a typical resource-based city, China
Mining activities worldwide have resulted in soil nutrient loss, which pose risks to crop and environmental health. We investigated the effects of post-mine reclamation activities on soil physicochemical properties and microbial communities based on 16S rRNA sequencing and the further statistical analysis in the coal base in Peixian city, China. The results revealed significant differences in soil microbial relative abundance between reclamation and reference soils. Proteobacteria was the most abundant phyla in all seven mine sites regardless of reclamation age while considerable differences were found in microbial community structure at other levels among different sites. Notebly, Gammaproteobacteria, member of the phylum Proteobacteria, had relatively high abundance in most sites. Furthermore, Kendall’s tau-b correlation heatmap revealed that potentially toxic elements and other physicochemical properties play vital roles in microbial community composition
Stone-Wales Defects Preserve Hyperuniformity in Amorphous Two-Dimensional Materials
Crystalline two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene possess unique
physical properties absent in their bulk form, enabling many novel device
applications. Yet, little is known about their amorphous counterparts, which
can be obtained by introducing the Stone-Wales (SW) topological defects via
proton radiation. Here we provide strong numerical evidence that SW defects
preserve hyperuniformity in hexagonal 2D materials, a recently discovered new
state of matter characterized by vanishing normalized infinite-wavelength
density fluctuations, which implies that all amorphous states of these
materials are hyperuniform. Specifically, the static structure factor S(k) of
these materials possesses the scaling S(k) ~ k^{\alpha} for small wave number
k, where 1<=\alpha(p)<=2 is monotonically decreasing as the SW defect
concentration p increases, indicating a transition from type-I to type-II
hyperuniformity at p ~= 0.12 induced by the saturation of the SW defects. This
hyperuniformity transition marks a structural transition from perturbed lattice
structures to truly amorphous structures, and underlies the onset of strong
correlation among the SW defects as well as a transition between distinct
electronic transport mechanisms associated with different hyperuniformity
classes
Organic Carbon Linkage with Soil Colloidal Phosphorus at Regional and Field Scales: Insights from Size Fractionation of Fine Particles
Nano and colloidal particles (1–1000 nm) play important roles in phosphorus (P) migration and loss from agricultural soils; however, little is known about their relative distribution in arable crop soils under varying agricultural geolandscapes at the regional scale. Surface soils (0–20 cm depth) were collected from 15 agricultural fields, including two sites with different carbon input strategies, in Zhejiang Province, China, and water-dispersible nanocolloids (0.6–25 nm), fine colloids (25–160 nm), and medium colloids (160–500 nm) were separated and analyzed using the asymmetrical flow field flow fractionation technique. Three levels of fine-colloidal P content (3583–6142, 859–2612, and 514–653 μg kg–1) were identified at the regional scale. The nanocolloidal fraction correlated with organic carbon (Corg) and calcium (Ca), and the fine colloidal fraction with Corg, silicon (Si), aluminum (Al), and iron (Fe). Significant linear relationships existed between colloidal P and Corg, Si, Al, Fe, and Ca and for nanocolloidal P with Ca. The organic carbon controlled colloidal P saturation, which in turn affected the P carrier ability of colloids. Field-scale organic carbon inputs did not change the overall morphological trends in size fractions of water-dispersible colloids. However, they significantly affected the peak concentration in each of the nano-, fine-, and medium-colloidal P fractions. Application of chemical fertilizer with carbon-based solid manure and/or modified biochar reduced the soil nano-, fine-, and medium-colloidal P content by 30–40%; however, the application of chemical fertilizer with biogas slurry boosted colloidal P formation. This study provides a deep and novel understanding of the forms and composition of colloidal P in agricultural soils and highlights their spatial regulation by soil characteristics and carbon inputs
Continuous Beam Steering Through Broadside Using Asymmetrically Modulated Goubau Line Leaky-Wave Antennas
Goubau line is a single-conductor transmission line, featuring easy integration and low-loss transmission properties. Here, we propose a periodic leaky-wave antenna (LWA) based on planar Goubau transmission line on a thin dielectric substrate. The leaky-wave radiations are generated by introducing periodic modulations along the Goubau line. In this way, the surface wave, which is slow-wave mode supported by the Goubau line, achieves an additional momentum and hence enters the fast-wave region for radiations. By employing the periodic modulations, the proposed Goubau line LWAs are able to continuously steer the main beam from backward to forward within the operational frequency range. However, the LWAs usually suffer from a low radiation efficiency at the broadside direction. To overcome this drawback, we explore both transversally and longitudinally asymmetrical modulations to the Goubau line. Theoretical analysis, numerical simulations and experimental results are given in comparison with the symmetrical LWAs. It is demonstrated that the asymmetrical modulations significantly improve the radiation efficiency of LWAs at the broadside. Furthermore, the measurement results agree well with the numerical ones, which experimentally validates the proposed LWA structures. These novel Goubau line LWAs, experimentally demonstrated and validated at microwave frequencies, show also great potential for millimeter-wave and terahertz systems
