Nonadiabatic noncyclic geometric phase and persistent current in one-dimensional rings

    Get PDF
The total geometric phase is composed of the nonadiabatic noncyclic Pancharatnam phase, the usual Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase, and the effective AB phase. It is found that the persistent current in one-dimensional rings is determined from this phase. As applications, we address first the geometric phase and the persistent current in a ring subject to a cylindrically symmetric electromagnetic field. We show that the Pancharatnam phase recovers the Aharanov-Anandan phase in the case of cyclic evolution, as well as the Berry phase in the adiabatic evolution. Moreover, we discuss the persistent current induced by the spin-orbit-induced geometric phase in the presence of a local magnetic field. Generalization to many-body cases is also addressed. ©1999 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio

The cellular receptors for infectious bursal disease virus

    Get PDF
Virus receptors are simplistically defined as cell surface molecules that mediate binding (attachment, adsorption) and/or trigger membrane fusion or entry through other processes. Infectious bursal diseasevirus (IBDV) entry into host cells occurs by recognition of specific cellular receptor(s) with viral envelope glycoprotein, which comprises the initial and key step of infection. Infection can be inhibited by blockage of the process. So the interest in receptors has been stimulated in large part by thepotential in the application of developing substances that show directed blocking activity. While for the purpose one should know which host cell and viral molecules are involved in the reciprocal recognition and interaction leading to the virus entry into the cell. Here, the review presents the currently available knowledge regarding the receptors or molecules that interact with IBDV

Energy bands and Landau levels of ultracold fermions in the bilayer honeycomb optical lattice

We investigate the spectrum and eigenstates of ultracold fermionic atoms in the bilayer honeycomb optical lattice. In the low energy approximation, the dispersion relation has parabolic form and the quasiparticles are chiral. In the presence of the effective magnetic field, which is created for the system with optical means, the energy spectrum shows an unconventional Landau level structure. Furthermore, the experimental detection of the spectrum is proposed with the Bragg scattering techniques.Comment: To appear in Journal of Modern Optic

Geometric quantum computation and multiqubit entanglement with superconducting qubits inside a cavity

    Get PDF
We analyze a new scheme for quantum information processing, with superconducting charge qubits coupled through a cavity mode, in which quantum manipulations are insensitive to the state of the cavity. We illustrate how to physically implement universal quantum computation as well as multiqubit entanglement based on unconventional geometric phase shifts in this scalable solid-state system. Some quantum error-correcting codes can also be easily constructed using the same technique. In view of the gate dependence on just global geometric features and the insensitivity to the state of cavity modes, the proposed quantum operations may result in high-fidelity quantum information processing. © 2005 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio

Effect of gold coating on sensitivity of rhombic silver nanostructure array

    Get PDF
The sensitivity is the most important parameter in the sensing field. Effort was made to study the effect of gold coating on the sensitivity of rhombic silver nanostructure array through numerical simulation using the discrete dipole approximation method. This study shows that thickness of the gold coating can be varied to tune the sensitivity of the rhombic silver nanostructure array. The Au-Ag nanostructure array is found to possess the maximum refractive index sensitivity of 714 nm/RIU when thickness of gold is 20 nm, thickness of silver is 25 nm, and refractive index of the medium is around 1.35. The condition for achieving the maximum refractive index sensitivity can be used for detecting many species of biomolecules and drugs in the future

Macroscopic Klein tunneling in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

    Get PDF
We propose an experimental scheme to detect macroscopic Klein tunneling with spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We show that a nonlinear Dirac equation with tunable parameters can be realized with such BECs. Through numerical calculations, we demonstrate that macroscopic Klein tunneling can be clearly detected under realistic conditions. Macroscopic quantum coherence in such relativistic tunneling is clarified and a BEC with a negative energy is shown to be able to transmit transparently through a wide Gaussian potential barrier. © 2012 American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio
