Sustained MAPK/ERK activation in adult Schwann cells impairs nerve repair
The MAPK/ERK pathway has a critical role in PNS development. It is required for Schwann cell (SC) differentiation and myelination; sustained embryonic MAPK/ERK activation in SCs enhances myelin growth overcoming signals that normally end myelination. Excess activation of this pathway can be maladaptive as in adulthood acute strong activation of MAPK/ERK has been shown to cause SC dedifferentiation and demyelination. We used a mouse model (including male and female animals) in which gain of function Mek1DD allele produces sustained MAPK/ERK activation in adult SCs and we determined the impact of such activation on nerve repair. In the uninjured nerve, MAPK/ERK activation neither impaired myelin nor did it re-activate myelination. However, in the injured nerve it was detrimental and resulted in delayed repair and functional recovery. In the early phase of injury the rate of myelin clearance was faster. Four weeks following injury, when nerve repair is normally advanced, myelinated axons of Mek1DD mutants demonstrated higher rates of myelin decompaction, a reduced number of Cajal bands and decreased internodal length. We noted the presence of abnormal Remak bundles with long SCs processes and reduced numbers of C-fibres/Remak bundle. Both the total number of regenerating axons and the intra-epidermal nerve fibres density in the skin were reduced. Sustained activation of MAPK/ERK in adult SCs is therefore deleterious to successful nerve repair, emphasising the differences in the signalling processes coordinating nerve development and repair. Our results also underline the key role of SCs in axon regeneration and successful target einnervation.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENTThe MAPK/ERK pathway promotes developmental myelination and its sustained activation in SCs induced continuous myelin growth, compensating for the absence of essential myelination signals. However, the strength of activation is fundamental because acute strong induction of MAPK/ERK in adulthood induces demyelination. What has been unknown is the effect of a mild but sustained MAPK/ERK activation in SCs on nerve repair in adulthood. This promoted myelin clearance but led to abnormalities in non-myelinating and myelinating SCs in the later phases of nerve repair, resulting in slowed axon regeneration, cutaneous reinnervation and functional recovery. Our results emphasise the distinct role of the MAPK/ERK pathway in developmental myelination versus remyelination and the importance of signalling between SCs and axons for successful axon regeneration
Electron Spin Injection at a Schottky Contact
We investigate theoretically electrical spin injection at a Schottky contact
between a spin-polarized electrode and a non-magnetic semiconductor. Current
and electron density spin-polarizations are discussed as functions of barrier
energy and semiconductor doping density. The effect of a spin-dependent
interface resistance that results from a tunneling region at the
contact/semiconductor interface is described. The model can serve as a guide
for designing spin-injection experiments with regard to the interface
properties and device structure.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Air quality, health, and climate implications of China’s synthetic natural gas development
Facing severe air pollution and growing dependence on natural gas imports, the Chinese government plans to increase coal-based synthetic natural gas (SNG) production. Although displacement of coal with SNG benefits air quality, it increases CO2 emissions. Due to variations in air pollutant and CO2 emission factors and energy efficiencies across sectors, coal replacement with SNG results in varying degrees of air quality benefits and climate penalties. We estimate air quality, human health, and climate impacts of SNG substitution strategies in 2020. Using all production of SNG in the residential sector results in an annual decrease of ∼32,000 (20,000 to 41,000) outdoor-air-pollution-associated premature deaths, with ranges determined by the low and high estimates of the health risks. If changes in indoor/household air pollution were also included, the decrease would be far larger. SNG deployment in the residential sector results in nearly 10 and 60 times greater reduction in premature mortality than if it is deployed in the industrial or power sectors, respectively. Due to inefficiencies in current household coal use, utilization of SNG in the residential sector results in only 20 to 30% of the carbon penalty compared with using it in the industrial or power sectors. Even if carbon capture and storage is used in SNG production with today’s technology, SNG emits 22 to 40% more CO2 than the same amount of conventional gas. Among the SNG deployment strategies we evaluate, allocating currently planned SNG to households provides the largest air quality and health benefits with the smallest carbon penaltie
MHV Rules for Higgs Plus Multi-Gluon Amplitudes
We use tree-level perturbation theory to show how non-supersymmetric one-loop
scattering amplitudes for a Higgs boson plus an arbitrary number of partons can
be constructed, in the limit of a heavy top quark, from a generalization of the
scalar graph approach of Cachazo, Svrcek and Witten. The Higgs boson couples to
gluons through a top quark loop which generates, for large top mass, a
dimension-5 operator H tr G^2. This effective interaction leads to amplitudes
which cannot be described by the standard MHV rules; for example, amplitudes
where all of the gluons have positive helicity. We split the effective
interaction into the sum of two terms, one holomorphic (selfdual) and one
anti-holomorphic (anti-selfdual). The holomorphic interactions give a new set
of MHV vertices -- identical in form to those of pure gauge theory, except for
momentum conservation -- that can be combined with pure gauge theory MHV
vertices to produce a tower of amplitudes with more than two negative
helicities. Similarly, the anti-holomorphic interactions give anti-MHV vertices
that can be combined with pure gauge theory anti-MHV vertices to produce a
tower of amplitudes with more than two positive helicities. A Higgs boson
amplitude is the sum of one MHV-tower amplitude and one anti-MHV-tower
amplitude. We present all MHV-tower amplitudes with up to four
negative-helicity gluons and any number of positive-helicity gluons (NNMHV).
These rules reproduce all of the available analytic formulae for Higgs +
n-gluon scattering (n<=5) at tree level, in some cases yielding considerably
shorter expressions.Comment: 34 pages, 8 figures; v2, references correcte
Azimuthal asymmetries in lepton-pair production at a fixed-target experiment using the LHC beams (AFTER)
A multi-purpose fixed-target experiment using the proton and lead-ion beams
of the LHC was recently proposed by Brodsky, Fleuret, Hadjidakis and Lansberg,
and here we concentrate our study on some issues related to the spin physics
part of this project (referred to as AFTER). We study the nucleon spin
structure through and processes with a fixed-target experiment using
the LHC proton beams, for the kinematical region with 7 TeV proton beams at the
energy in center-of-mass frame of two nucleons GeV. We calculate
and estimate the azimuthal asymmetries of unpolarized and
dilepton production processes in the Drell--Yan continuum region and at the
-pole. We also calculate the , and
azimuthal asymmetries of and dilepton production
processes with the target proton and deuteron longitudinally or transversally
polarized in the Drell--Yan continuum region and around resonances region.
We conclude that it is feasible to measure these azimuthal asymmetries,
consequently the three-dimensional or transverse momentum dependent parton
distribution functions (3dPDFs or TMDs), at this new AFTER facility.Comment: 15 pages, 40 figures. Version accepted for publication in EPJ
Spin-Polarized Electron Transport at Ferromagnet/Semiconductor Schottky Contacts
We theoretically investigate electron spin injection and spin-polarization
sensitive current detection at Schottky contacts between a ferromagnetic metal
and an n-type or p-type semiconductor. We use spin-dependent continuity
equations and transport equations at the drift-diffusion level of
approximation. Spin-polarized electron current and density in the semiconductor
are described for four scenarios corresponding to the injection or the
collection of spin polarized electrons at Schottky contacts to n-type or p-type
semiconductors. The transport properties of the interface are described by a
spin-dependent interface resistance, resulting from an interfacial tunneling
region. The spin-dependent interface resistance is crucial for achieving spin
injection or spin polarization sensitivity in these configurations. We find
that the depletion region resulting from Schottky barrier formation at a
metal/semiconductor interface is detrimental to both spin injection and spin
detection. However, the depletion region can be tailored using a doping density
profile to minimize these deleterious effects. For example, a heavily doped
region near the interface, such as a delta-doped layer, can be used to form a
sharp potential profile through which electrons tunnel to reduce the effective
Schottky energy barrier that determines the magnitude of the depletion region.
The model results indicate that efficient spin-injection and spin-polarization
detection can be achieved in properly designed structures and can serve as a
guide for the structure design.Comment: RevTex

The roles of sulfuric acid in new particle formation and growth in the mega-city of Beijing
Simultaneous measurements of gaseous sulfuric acid and particle number size distributions were performed to investigate aerosol nucleation and growth during CAREBeijing-2008. The analysis of the measured aerosols and sulfuric acid with an aerosol dynamic model shows the dominant role of sulfuric acid in new particle formation (NPF) process but also in the subsequent growth in Beijing. Based on the data of twelve NPF events, the average formation rates (2–13 cm−3 s−1) show a linear correlation with the sulfuric acid concentrations (R2=0.85). Coagulation seems to play a significant role in reducing the number concentration of nucleation mode particles with the ratio of the coagulation loss to formation rate being 0.41±0.16. The apparent growth rates vary from 3 to 11 nm h−1. Condensation of sulfuric acid and its subsequent neutralization by ammonia and coagulation contribute to the apparent particle growth on average 45±18% and 34±17%, respectively. The 30% higher concentration of sulfate than organic compounds in particles during the seven sulfur-rich NPF events but 20% lower concentration of sulfate during the five sulfur-poor type suggest that organic compounds are an important contributor to the growth of the freshly nucleated particles, especially during the sulfur-poor cases
Electric-field dependent spin diffusion and spin injection into semiconductors
We derive a drift-diffusion equation for spin polarization in semiconductors
by consistently taking into account electric-field effects and nondegenerate
electron statistics. We identify a high-field diffusive regime which has no
analogue in metals. In this regime there are two distinct spin diffusion
lengths. Furthermore, spin injection from a ferromagnetic metal into a
semiconductor is enhanced by several orders of magnitude and spins can be
transported over distances much greater than the low-field spin diffusion
length.Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps figure
Quasiparticle Scattering Interference in High Temperature Superconductors
We propose that the energy-dependent spatial modulation of the local density
of states seen by Hoffman, et al [hoff2] is due to the scattering interference
of quasiparticles. In this paper we present the general theoretical basis for
such an interpretation and lay out the underlying assumptions. As an example,
we perform exact T-matrix calculation for the scattering due to a single
impurity. The results of this calculation is used to check the assumptions, and
demonstrate that quasiparticle scattering interference can indeed produce
patterns similar to those observed in Ref. [hoff2].Comment: RevTex4 twocolumn, 4 pages, 3 figures. Figs.2-3 virtually embedded
