Global Monopole in Asymptotically dS/AdS Spacetime
In this paper, we investigate the global monopole in asymptotically dS/Ads
spacetime and find that the mass of the monopole in the asymptotically dS
spacetime could be positive if the cosmological constant is greater than a
critical value. This shows that the gravitational field of the global monopole
could be attractive or repulsive depending on the value of the cosmological
constant.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Crohn's disease-associated and cryptoglandular fistulas: differences and similarities
Perianal fistulas are defined as pathological connections between the anorectal canal and the perianal skin. Most perianal fistulas are cryptoglandular fistulas, which are thought to originate from infected anal glands. The remainder of the fistulas mainly arises as complications of Crohn's disease (CD), trauma, or as a result of malignancies. Fistulas in CD are considered as a consequence of a chronic and transmural inflammatory process in the distal bowel and can, in some cases, even precede the diagnosis of CD. Although both cryptoglandular and CD-associated fistulas might look similar macroscopically, they differ considerably in their complexity, treatment options, and healing rate. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to differentiate between these two types of fistulas. In this review, the differences between CD-associated and cryptoglandular perianal fistulas in epidemiology, pathogenesis, and clinical management are discussed. Finally, a flow chart is provided for physicians to guide them when dealing with patients displaying their first episode of perianal fistulas.Cellular mechanisms in basic and clinical gastroenterology and hepatolog
D-branes in PP-wave light cone string field theory
The cubic interaction vertex and the dynamical supercharges are constructed
for open strings ending on D7-branes, in light-cone superstring field theory in
PP-wave background. In this context, we write down the symmetry generators in
terms of the relevant group structure: SU(2) x SU(2) x SO(2) x SO(2),
originating from the eight transverse directions in the PP-wave background and
use the expressions to explicitly construct the vertex at the level of stringy
zero modes. The results are further generalized to include all the stringy
excitations as well.Comment: 30 pages, correction in eqn. (4.28), few equations (appendix),

Ordering and Fluctuation of Orbital and Lattice Distortion in Perovskite Manganese Oxides
Roles of orbital and lattice degrees of freedom in strongly correlated
systems are investigated to understand electronic properties of perovskite Mn
oxides such as La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3}. An extended double-exchange model
containing Coulomb interaction, doubly degenerate orbitals and Jahn-Teller
coupling is derived under full polarization of spins with two-dimensional
anisotropy. Quantum fluctuation effects of Coulomb interaction and orbital
degrees of freedom are investigated by using the quantum Monte Carlo method. In
undoped states, it is crucial to consider both the Coulomb interaction and the
Jahn-Teller coupling in reproducing characteristic hierarchy of energy scales
among charge, orbital-lattice and spin degrees of freedom in experiments. Our
numerical results quantitatively reproduce the charge gap amplitude as well as
the stabilization energy and the amplitude of the cooperative Jahn-Teller
distortion in undoped compounds. Upon doping of carriers, in the absence of the
Jahn-Teller distortion, critical enhancement of both charge compressibility and
orbital correlation length is found with decreasing doping concentration. These
are discussed as origins of strong incoherence in charge dynamics. With the
Jahn-Teller coupling in the doped region, collapse of the Jahn-Teller
distortion and instability to phase separation are obtained and favorably
compared with experiments. These provide a possible way to understand the
complicated properties of lightly doped manganites.Comment: 22 pages RevTeX including 25 PS figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.B,

Towards Machine Wald
The past century has seen a steady increase in the need of estimating and
predicting complex systems and making (possibly critical) decisions with
limited information. Although computers have made possible the numerical
evaluation of sophisticated statistical models, these models are still designed
\emph{by humans} because there is currently no known recipe or algorithm for
dividing the design of a statistical model into a sequence of arithmetic
operations. Indeed enabling computers to \emph{think} as \emph{humans} have the
ability to do when faced with uncertainty is challenging in several major ways:
(1) Finding optimal statistical models remains to be formulated as a well posed
problem when information on the system of interest is incomplete and comes in
the form of a complex combination of sample data, partial knowledge of
constitutive relations and a limited description of the distribution of input
random variables. (2) The space of admissible scenarios along with the space of
relevant information, assumptions, and/or beliefs, tend to be infinite
dimensional, whereas calculus on a computer is necessarily discrete and finite.
With this purpose, this paper explores the foundations of a rigorous framework
for the scientific computation of optimal statistical estimators/models and
reviews their connections with Decision Theory, Machine Learning, Bayesian
Inference, Stochastic Optimization, Robust Optimization, Optimal Uncertainty
Quantification and Information Based Complexity.Comment: 37 page

Immunology of multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) leading to demyelination, axonal damage, and progressive neurologic disability. The development of MS is influenced by environmental factors, particularly the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and genetic factors, which include specific HLA types, particularly DRB1*1501-DQA1*0102-DQB1*0602, and a predisposition to autoimmunity in general. MS patients have increased circulating T-cell and antibody reactivity to myelin proteins and gangliosides. It is proposed that the role of EBV is to infect autoreactive B cells that then seed the CNS and promote the survival of autoreactive T cells there. It is also proposed that the clinical attacks of relapsing-remitting MS are orchestrated by myelin-reactive T cells entering the white matter of the CNS from the blood, and that the progressive disability in primary and secondary progressive MS is caused by the action of autoantibodies produced in the CNS by meningeal lymphoid follicles with germinal centers
