Electron acceleration associated with the magnetic flux pileup regions in the near-Earth plasma sheet: A multicase study

Get PDF
Using the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) observations, we study electron acceleration (<30 keV) in the magnetic flux pileup regions (FPRs) in the near-Earth plasma sheet (X ~ –10 RE). We present three cases of FRPs associated with dipolarization fronts and substorm dipolarization. Based on the characteristics of the magnetic field, we defined the magnetic field enhancement region (MFER) as the magnetic field with significant ramp that is usually observed near the dipolarization front boundary layer. On the other side, the increased magnetic field without a significant ramp is the rest of a FPR. Our results show that betatron acceleration dominates for 10–30 keV electrons inside the MFER, whereas Fermi acceleration dominates for 10–30 keV electrons inside the rest of the FPR. Betatron acceleration is caused by the enhancement of the local magnetic field, whereas Fermi acceleration is related to the shrinking length of magnetic field line. These accelerated electrons inside the FPRs in the near-Earth tail play a potentially important role in the evolution of the Earth's electron radiation belt and substorms

The balanced geological sect ion has been widely used for the analysis of orogenic belt, but it is infrequent for ex tensional basins. In this paper, 4 extensional balanced geological sect ion analysis were practiced in Fuyu oil layer of Liangjing , Jilin oilfield, southern Songliao basin with the technology and method, including deformation history restoration, decompaction and erosion restoration. The structure of different ages and the continuous sedimentary sections have been restored. T he result s show that the structural styles possess the characteristics of negative flower structure in the shallow level and ex tensional detachment in deep level. The parameters, including fault growth index, the basin ex tensional history and fault detachment depth, indicate that Late Cretaceous is an important stage for the structure transferring mainly with a strike-slip style before this time and an ex tensional structure and detachment after this time. Therefore, a basin model with twin dynamic property and back-arc characters is proposed.published_or_final_versio

Ethnic differences in susceptibilities to A(H1N1) flu: An epidemic parameter indicating a weak viral virulence

Get PDF
The current A(H1N1) flu has showed sub-population dependent susceptibility and fatality as early as April and May of 2009 in its first wave of spreading. After the pandemic outbreak spreads globally for more than seven months, the subpopulation dependence of this flu, including ethnicity, age and genderselectivity, has been recognized by several research groups. This paper attempts to discussed how to identify ethnic selectivity from the released data by WHO relevant to this ongoing flu, review some recently published papers describing the presence of ethnic differences in susceptibilities to the H1N1flu virus and further raised an argument that ethnic differences in susceptibilities to a virus might be a piece of evidence reflecting a weak virulence of that specific virus
