Landscape change and the sustainable development strategy of different types of ethnic villages driven by the grain for Green Program

The Grain for Green Program (GGP) is an important ecological project in China that was implemented to tackle serious soil erosion and forest loss for sustainable development. Investigating landscape change is an efficient way to monitor and assess the implementation of GGP. In this paper, 180 ethnic villages, including 36 Miao and Dong (MD) villages with combined populations of Miao people and Dong people, 65 Dong villages, and 79 Miao villages in Qiandongnan Prefecture were selected to investigate the influence of GGP on ethnic villages by evaluating the landscape changes before and after the implementation of the GGP within 1-km and 2-km distance buffers around ethnic villages. The results show that the GGP has more significant positive impacts on reforestation around Miao villages than Dong villages and MD villages because Miao villages are mostly located in higher and steeper areas, which are the focus of the GGP. Based on the analysis, a continuation of the GGP in Qiandongnan Prefecture is recommended, as it can incentivize the recovery of forest cover in steeper slopes. More attention should now be paid to the Dong villages and MD villages, which were not previously a focus of the GGP

Preserving Literacy and Education of Dong Pipa Cultural Heritage in Guizhou Province, China

    Get PDF
Dong Pipa is a traditional string widely used in the daily life and folk music of the Dong people of Guizhou, Hunan, Guangxi, and other parts of China. The study’s objectives are to explore Dong Pipa literacy and education in the context of preserving Dong Pipa cultural heritage in Guizhou Province, China. Through the study of the site and the current research, the research shows that the Dong Pipa has become a musical instrument throughout the Dong community due to its simple structure and many relationships, such as entertainment, relationships, and lifestyle. The traditional music that Dong Pipa represents, however, is having significant issues due to the influence of global culture and a modern lifestyle. To meet this challenge, relevant government departments should increase the promotion of Dong Pipa culture to promote the interests of the Dong people, and schools should improve the outcomes of Dong Pipa education and heritage. Cultural institutions should organize more Dong Pipa performances and competitions to encourage Dong people to learn and preserve Dong cultural heritage. These efforts will help ensure Dong Pipa survives and thrives in today’s society

    On Su Dong-po\u27s(蘇東坡)Art and Literature

Su Dongpo is one of the most prominent poets in the Song period. In this paper, I examined his thoughts and attitude on art and literature around the time of his exile. As he opposed the political reform by Wang An-shi (王安石), he was impeached for writing many verses which were regarded as lese-majesty. He was exiled to Huang Zhou (黄州) in 1071. Though he didn\u27t write many poems at this time, he devoted himself to drawing. Though this experience he began to realize that both drawing pictures and composing poems were originated from the same source of creation. Just before he was exiled, he recalled his friend, Wen Tong (文同), and wrote an essay about him. Su Dong-po referred to technical skills on drawing, saying "Imagine a bamboo drawn perfectly in your mind and should tackle it." Although he mentioned about drawing, it can be read as a criticism on verse. It might be too much to say that a person who can write poems can draw pictures, but at least Su Dong-po thought that it was verses that give pictures profundity
