    Comparison of the Long-Range Climate Memory in Outgoing Longwave Radiation over the Tibetan Plateau and the Indian Monsoon Region

    Based on the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) method, scaling behaviors of the daily outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) from 1979 to 2015 over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and the Indian Monsoon Region (IMR) are analyzed. The results show that there is long-term memory for the OLR time series over the TP and IMR. The long-range memory behaviors of OLR over TP are stronger than those over IMR. The averaged values of the scaling exponents over TP and IMR are 0.71 and 0.64; the maximum values in the two regions are 0.81 and 0.75; the minimum values are 0.59 and 0.58. The maximum frequency counts for scaling exponents occur in the range of 0.625 and 0.675 both in TP and in IMR. The spatial distribution of the scaling exponents of the OLR sequence is closely related to the conditions of climatic high cloud cover in the two areas. The high cloud cover over TP is obviously less than that of IMR. In addition, the scaling behaviors of OLR over TP and IMR are caused by the fractal characteristics of time series, which is further proved by randomly disrupting the time series to remove trends and correlation

    Genetically Regulated Bilirubin and Risk of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Mendelian Randomization Study

    Mildly elevated serum bilirubin levels were reported to be associated with decreased risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Whether this is a causal relationship remains unclear. We tested the hypothesis that genetically elevated plasma bilirubin levels are causally related to reduce risk of NAFLD. A total of 403 eligible participants were enrolled. NAFLD was determined by liver ultrasonography. The uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) gene variants (UGT1A1*6 and UGT1A1*28) were genotyped through sequencing. We applied a Mendelian randomization approach to assess the effects of genetically elevated bilirubin levels on NAFLD. NAFLD was diagnosed in 19% of participants in our study (NAFLD = 76; Non-NAFLD = 327). The variants of UGT1A1*28 and UGT1A1*6 were strongly associated with increased total bilirubin (TB), direct bilirubin (DB), and indirect bilirubin (IB) levels (each P < 0.001). These two common variants explain 12.7% (TB), 11.4% (IB), and 10.2% (DB) of the variance in bilirubin levels, respectively. In logistic regression model, after multifactorial adjustment for sex, age, aminotransferase (ALT), white blood count (WBC), and body mass index (BMI), variant UGT1A1*28 (OR = 1.39; 95%CI: 0.614–3.170; P = 0.43) and UGT1A1*6 (OR = 1.64, 95%CI, 0.78–3.44; P = 0.19) genotypes were not significantly associated with the risk of NAFLD. Moreover, the plasma bilirubin level (TB, IB, and DB) were not significantly associated with the risk of NAFLD (P > 0.30). A Mendelian randomization analysis of the UGT1A1 variants suggests that bilirubin is unlikely causally related with the risk of NAFLD

    Osteopontin, Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor and Anti-Interleukin-8 Autoantibodies Complement CA125 for Detection of Early Stage Ovarian Cancer

    Early detection of ovarian cancer promises to reduce mortality. While serum CA125 can detect more than 60% of patients with early stage (I–II) disease, greater sensitivity might be observed with a panel of biomarkers. Ten protein antigens and 12 autoantibody biomarkers were measured in sera from 76 patients with early stage (I–II), 44 patients with late stage (III–IV) ovarian cancer and 200 healthy participants in the normal risk ovarian cancer screening study. A four-biomarker panel (CA125, osteopontin (OPN), macrophage inhibitory factor (MIF), and anti-IL-8 autoantibodies) detected 82% of early stage cancers compared to 65% with CA125 alone. In early stage subjects the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for the panel (0.985) was significantly greater (p < 0.001) than the AUC for CA125 alone (0.885). Assaying an independent validation set of sera from 71 early stage ovarian cancer patients, 45 late stage patients and 131 healthy women, AUC in early stage disease was improved from 0.947 with CA125 alone to 0.974 with the four-biomarker panel (p = 0.015). Consequently, OPN, MIF and IL-8 autoantibodies can be used in combination with CA125 to distinguish ovarian cancer patients from healthy controls with high sensitivity. Osteopontin appears to be a robust biomarker that deserves further evaluation in combination with CA12

    Computational Analysis of HIV-1 Resistance Based on Gene Expression Profiles and the Virus-Host Interaction Network

    A very small proportion of people remain negative for HIV infection after repeated HIV-1 viral exposure, which is called HIV-1 resistance. Understanding the mechanism of HIV-1 resistance is important for the development of HIV-1 vaccines and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) therapies. In this study, we analyzed the gene expression profiles of CD4+ T cells from HIV-1-resistant individuals and HIV-susceptible individuals. One hundred eighty-five discriminative HIV-1 resistance genes were identified using the Minimum Redundancy-Maximum Relevance (mRMR) and Incremental Feature Selection (IFS) methods. The virus protein target enrichment analysis of the 185 HIV-1 resistance genes suggested that the HIV-1 protein nef might play an important role in HIV-1 infection. Moreover, we identified 29 infection information exchanger genes from the 185 HIV-1 resistance genes based on a virus-host interaction network analysis. The infection information exchanger genes are located on the shortest paths between virus-targeted proteins and are important for the coordination of virus infection. These proteins may be useful targets for AIDS prevention or therapy, as intervention in these pathways could disrupt communication with virus-targeted proteins and HIV-1 infection

    Age-specific reference values for low psoas muscle index at the L3 vertebra level in healthy populations: A multicenter study

    Background and aimsThe progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength and physical function is defined as sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is closely related to the prognosis of patients. Accurate diagnosis and adequate management of sarcopenia are crucial. The psoas muscle mass index taken at the third lumbar vertebra (L3-PMI, cm2/m2) is one of the established methods for evaluating skeletal muscle mass. However, the cutoff values of L3-PMI for diagnosis of sarcopenia are not yet to be clarified in Asian populations. We attempted to establish reference values for low L3-PMI that would be suitable for defining sarcopenia in the Northern Chinese population.MethodsThis was a retrospective, multicenter cross-sectional study. A search of abdominal CT imaging reports was conducted in four representative cities in northern China. Transverse CT images were measured using the analysis software Slice-O-Matic. Low psoas muscle index was defined as the 5th percentile or mean-2SD of the study group.Results1,787 healthy individuals in the study were grouped by age. The sex and number of people in each group were similar. L3-PMI had a negative linear correlation with age, and a strong correlation with the skeletal muscle index taken at the third lumbar vertebrae (L3-SMI, cm2/m2). The L3-PMI reference values in males were 5.41 cm2/m2 for 20–29 years, 4.71 cm2/m2 for 30–39 years, 4.65 cm2/m2 for 40–49 years, 4.10 cm2/m2 for 50–59 years and 3.68 cm2/m2 for over 60 years by using 5th percentile threshold. Similarly, the reference values in females were 3.32, 3.40, 3.18, 2.91, and 2.62 cm2/m2. When using mean-2SD as the reference, the values for each age group were 4.57, 4.16, 4.03, 3.37, and 2.87 cm2/m2 for males and 2.79, 2.70, 2.50, 2.30, and 2.26 cm2/m2 for females, respectively.ConclusionWe defined the reference values of age-specific low skeletal muscle mass when simply evaluated by L3-PMI. Further studies about the association of sarcopenia using these reference values with certain clinical outcomes or diseases are needed

    Upper ocean biogeochemistry of the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre : from nutrient sources to carbon export

    Subtropical gyres cover 26–29% of the world’s surface ocean and are conventionally regarded as ocean deserts due to their permanent stratification, depleted surface nutrients, and low biological productivity. Despite tremendous advances over the past three decades, particularly through the Hawaii Ocean Time-series and the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study, which have revolutionized our understanding of the biogeochemistry in oligotrophic marine ecosystems, the gyres remain understudied. We review current understanding of upper ocean biogeochemistry in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, considering other subtropical gyres for comparison. We focus our synthesis on spatial variability, which shows larger than expected dynamic ranges of properties such as nutrient concentrations, rates of N2 fixation, and biological production. This review provides new insights into how nutrient sources drive community structure and export in upper subtropical gyres. We examine the euphotic zone in subtropical gyres as a two-layered vertically structured system: a nutrient-depleted layer above the top of the nutricline in the well-lit upper ocean and a nutrient-replete layer below in the dimly lit waters. These layers vary in nutrient supply and stoichiometries and physical forcing, promoting differences in community structure and food webs, with direct impacts on the magnitude and composition of export production. We evaluate long-term variations in key biogeochemical parameters in both of these euphotic zone layers. Finally, we identify major knowledge gaps and research challenges in these vast and unique systems that offer opportunities for future studies

    A Novel Strategy for Sensorless Control of IPMSM with Error Compensation Based on Rotating High Frequency Carrier Signal Injection

    In the applications of rail transit and electric vehicles, sensorless control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) usually uses high frequency (HF) signal injection in low speed or zero speed. Rotating HF signal injection based on the stationary reference frame can identify the rotor position, but its accuracy is easily affected by various nonlinearities of the control system and stator resistance. In this paper, the causes of rotor position estimation deviation are analyzed and deduced in detail. It is proposed that the rotor position estimation deviation can be divided into high frequency phase deviation (HFPD) and stator resistance phase deviation. On the basis of these analyses, a novel sensorless rotor position estimation strategy for IPMSM is proposed. This strategy can theoretically eliminate the HF phase deviation caused by the nonlinearity of the control system and reduce the phase deviation caused by the stator resistance. Although the factors that cause the estimation deviation of rotor position may change with the time and the operation status of the motor, the proposed strategy has the characteristics of online calculation and real-time compensation, which can improve the accuracy of the estimated rotor position. In addition, this paper provides a detailed theoretical derivation of resolving rotor position considering stator resistance and HF phase deviation. Finally, the result analysis on an IPMSM demonstrate the correctness of the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the strategy
