    Financial innovation system reform in Chinese banking: the impact on bank profitability

    China's innovation capacity has been growing rapidly in recent years, but the country still needs to improve its national innovation system and form a financial services system that is compatible with the full life cycle of science and innovation companies. Looking back at China's history of financial development, the choice and feedback of commercial banks on regulatory policy has been an important factor influencing regulatory policy. With China's financial market gradually opening up to the outside world and an influx of foreign commercial banks, Chinese commercial banks are facing increasing competitive pressure. Improving the profitability of Chinese commercial banks to enhance their competitiveness has become a key to financial innovation and reform in the Chinese banking sector. Therefore, this study investigates the profitability and profit efficiency levels of Chinese banking industry over the period 2012-2020 using stochastic frontier approach. The empirical analysis leads to the following conclusions: The result is that national joint-stock commercial banks and city commercial banks, which have been given more management freedom, are trying to adapt to the dynamically changing environment and show an increase in efficiency. State-owned commercial banks maintain high levels of efficiency, but are more conservative to change. Agricultural commercial banks, for the most part, are showing efficiency gains, with no strong deterioration shown.     Exotic single-photon and enhanced deep-level emissions in hBN strain superlattice

    The peculiar defect-related photon emission processes in 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have become a topic of intense research due to their potential applications in quantum information and sensing technologies. Recent efforts have focused on activating and modulating the defect energy levels in hBN by methods that can be integrated on a chip, and understanding the underlying physical mechanism. Here, we report on exotic single photon and enhanced deep-level emissions in 2D hBN strain superlattice, which is fabricated by transferring multilayer hBN onto hexagonal close-packed silica spheres on silica substrate. We realize effective activation of the single photon emissions (SPEs) in the multilayer hBN at the positions that are in contact with the apex of the SiO2 spheres. At these points, the local tensile strain induced blue-shift of the SPE is found to be up to 12 nm. Furthermore, high spatial resolution cathodoluminescence measurments show remarkable strain-enhanced deep-level (DL) emissions in the multilayer hBN with the emission intensity distribution following the periodic hexagonal pattern of the strain superlattice. The maximum DL emission enhancement is up to 350% with a energy redshift of 6 nm. Our results provide a simple on-chip compatible method for activating and tuning the defect-related photon emissions in multilayer hBN, demonstrating the potential of hBN strain superlattice as a building block for future on-chip quantum nanophotonic devices

    Comprehensive studies of biological characteristics, phytochemical profiling, and antioxidant activities of two local citrus varieties in China

    Citrus is widely grown all over the world, and citrus fruits have long been recognized for their nutritional and medical value for human health. However, some local citrus varieties with potentially important value are still elusive. In the current study, we elucidated the biological characteristics, phylogenetic and phytochemical profiling, antioxidants and antioxidant activities of the two local citrus varieties, namely Zangju and Tuju. The physiological and phylogenetic analysis showed that Zangju fruit has the characteristics of wrinkled skin, higher acidity, and phylogenetically closest to sour mandarin Citrus sunki, whereas, Tuju is a kind of red orange with vermilion peel, small fruit and high sugar content, and closely clustered with Citrus erythrosa. The phytochemical analysis showed that many nutrition and antioxidant related differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were detected in the peel and pulp of Zangju and Tuju fruits. Furthermore, it was found that the relative abundance of some key flavonoids and phenolic acids, such as tangeritin, sinensetin, diosmetin, nobiletin, and sinapic acid in the peel and pulp of Zangju and Tuju were higher than that in sour range Daidai and satsuma mandarin. Additionally, Zangju pulp and Tuju peel showed the strongest ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) activity, whereas, Tuju peel and pulp showed the strongest DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging activities, respectively. Moreover, both the antioxidant activities of peel and pulp were significantly correlated with the contents of total phenols, total flavonoids or ascorbic acid. These results indicate that the two local citrus varieties have certain nutritional and medicinal value and potential beneficial effects on human health. Our findings will also provide an important theoretical basis for further conservation, development and medicinal utilization of Zangju and Tuju

    Divergent Evolution of TRC Genes in Mammalian Niche Adaptation

    Mammals inhabit a wide variety of ecological niches, which in turn can be affected by various ecological factors, especially in relation to immunity. The canonical TRC repertoire (TRAC, TRBC, TRGC, and TRDC) codes C regions of T cell receptor chains that form the primary antigen receptors involved in the activation of cellular immunity. At present, little is known about the correlation between the evolution of mammalian TRC genes and ecological factors. In this study, four types canonical of TRC genes were identified from 37 mammalian species. Phylogenetic comparative methods (phyANOVA and PGLS) and selective pressure analyses among different groups of ecological factors (habitat, diet, and sociality) were carried out. The results showed that habitat was the major ecological factor shaping mammalian TRC repertoires. Specifically, trade-off between TRGC numbers and positive selection of TRAC and the balanced evolutionary rates between TRAC and TRDC genes were speculated as two main mechanisms in adaption to habitat and sociality. Overall, our study suggested divergent mechanisms for the evolution of TRCs, prompting mammalian immunity adaptions within diverse niches

    Prognostic value of the ascites characteristics in pseudomyxoma peritonei originating from the appendix

    BackgroundPseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare disease, with the overall survival (OS) influenced by many factors. To date, no ascites characteristics have been reported to predict OS of patients with PMP. The present study therefore aims to describe the ascites characteristics for PMP and identify prognostic factors for survival.MethodsBetween June 2010 and June 2020, 473 PMP patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy were included in a retrospective study. Survival analysis was performed with the Kaplan–Meier method by the log-rank test and a Cox proportional hazards model. Associations between categorical variables were analyzed using the chi-squared test.ResultsAmong all included patients, 61% were women. The median OS was 47 months (range, 4–124 months) at the last follow-up in December 2020. Ascites characteristics can be divided into light blood ascites, “Jelly” mucus ascites, and faint yellow and clear ascites. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that the degree of radical surgery, ascites characteristics, and pathological grade were independently associated with OS in PMP patients. The chi-squared test documented that faint yellow “Jelly” ascites were related to low-grade PMP and light blood ascites were associated with high-grade PMP (P < 0.01).ConclusionsLight blood ascites, incomplete cytoreduction surgery, and high-grade histopathology may predict poor OS in appendix-derived PMP

    A genetic variation map for chicken with 2.8 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms

    We describe a genetic variation map for the chicken genome containing 2.8 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms ( SNPs). This map is based on a comparison of the sequences of three domestic chicken breeds ( a broiler, a layer and a Chinese silkie) with that of their wild ancestor, red jungle fowl. Subsequent experiments indicate that at least 90% of the variant sites are true SNPs, and at least 70% are common SNPs that segregate in many domestic breeds. Mean nucleotide diversity is about five SNPs per kilobase for almost every possible comparison between red jungle fowl and domestic lines, between two different domestic lines, and within domestic lines - in contrast to the notion that domestic animals are highly inbred relative to their wild ancestors. In fact, most of the SNPs originated before domestication, and there is little evidence of selective sweeps for adaptive alleles on length scales greater than 100 kilobases

    The Genomes of Oryza sativa: A History of Duplications

    We report improved whole-genome shotgun sequences for the genomes of indica and japonica rice, both with multimegabase contiguity, or almost 1,000-fold improvement over the drafts of 2002. Tested against a nonredundant collection of 19,079 full-length cDNAs, 97.7% of the genes are aligned, without fragmentation, to the mapped super-scaffolds of one or the other genome. We introduce a gene identification procedure for plants that does not rely on similarity to known genes to remove erroneous predictions resulting from transposable elements. Using the available EST data to adjust for residual errors in the predictions, the estimated gene count is at least 38,000–40,000. Only 2%–3% of the genes are unique to any one subspecies, comparable to the amount of sequence that might still be missing. Despite this lack of variation in gene content, there is enormous variation in the intergenic regions. At least a quarter of the two sequences could not be aligned, and where they could be aligned, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rates varied from as little as 3.0 SNP/kb in the coding regions to 27.6 SNP/kb in the transposable elements. A more inclusive new approach for analyzing duplication history is introduced here. It reveals an ancient whole-genome duplication, a recent segmental duplication on Chromosomes 11 and 12, and massive ongoing individual gene duplications. We find 18 distinct pairs of duplicated segments that cover 65.7% of the genome; 17 of these pairs date back to a common time before the divergence of the grasses. More important, ongoing individual gene duplications provide a never-ending source of raw material for gene genesis and are major contributors to the differences between members of the grass family
